As a Muslim I don't belive half of the elements of the story you presented, but this did not bother me: it is crashcourse mythology after all, not religion studies, and we ARE looking for a good story here. BartAcaDiouka If you want to look at the Christian account, you'll need to look elsewhere. Heck, most of Revelation isn't about the end of the world (understandable, since that's not what "apocalypse" means in the Greek it was written in). It is about "revealing what is hidden", so, mostly set in the present! And of that, they only mentioned the bit about angels pouring plagues, with some throwaway references to the beast etc. Revelation is an old book written in a dead genre which heavily leans on its culture because of the way it uses imagery. By my mind, unless you already have a decent understanding of the Christian worldview and the resurrection they are expecting, you shouldn't read/investigate Revelation because it will only be confusing. Many Christians make this mistake, though, so I wouldn't blame you...
I just started watching the crash course on philosophy and I love the fun way these videos are designed. I hope that one day, even though not very common in the public eye, crash course could please do a course on the occult, both history and theory/practical. You failed to mention something rather significant. The numbers used in the Hebrew/Christian and Islam religions had very specific metaphorical meanings to them. In fact, pretty much everything in those stories was symbolic and not meant to be taken literally. I understand that time constraints make impractical any kind of deeper analysis on most topics, but you could have at least made a comment on that fact in passing, as it's key to avoiding misunderstandings.

To be honest, these stories are nice and all for kids, but really, doesn't matter much. One important note regarding the end of Revelation: St. John's description doesn't simply end with the world smoldering and utterly destroyed. Rather, the climax and culmination of the entire book are found in the last two chapters which describe the restoration of all things in the new creation, the final coming together of Heaven and earth in the Kingdom of God, the end of suffering and death, and the unending reign of God into eternity.

This was a very interesting video for a Muslim like myself. I feel we feel a bit differently on what was discussed as islam's view of the apocalypse, but I think this video would hopefully at least make more people curious about this topic in and of itself. It's funny how all of these apocalypse stories focus on one tiny corner of the planet. It's almost like the humans writing these books only had a small reference of the world they lived in. Really makes you think.
What this video seems to fail to mention is that Apocalypse means "lifting the veil," or revelation. It was written with a lot of imagery to hide its true meaning from the pagans. When saint John wrote the Apocalypse, there was a persecution and the main purpose of his book was to give christians the hope that all these persecutions will end and that Christ will be victorious. That's why Rome is called "Babylon the Great", or that the Beast, who is really the Roman Empire, has a number, 666, instead of being called Nero. You can't read the Apocalypse of saint John litteraly without losing its true meaning.
But that is so well hidden that for almost two thousand years, no one cared about that contemporary meaning, and instead read it as the end of the world. Esp. because Christ didn't return soon, like John most probably assumed, and the whole thing lost much of its meaning. After all, this is not theology but mythology. And as far as stories go, the "end of the world" interpretation was _far_ more influential than any historic reading of the text.
The problem is the fact that there are various interpretations isn't brought up in the video, makes the video incomplete and sort of misleading, because the futurism understanding WASNT the most prevalent for most of history, it was partial preterism or historicism that was usually taught and the future end of the world interpretation only became the most popular in the 19th century when a presbyterian invented dispensationalism

Technically speaking, AN apocalypse is a revelation: "apocalypse" is Greek for "uncovering", as in, "revealing". It just so happens that there was a particularly famous revelation in Christian mythology, namely that one in the Book of Revelations, where God revealed to John how the world was going to end. So THE revelation (or in Greek, the apocalypse) came to mean that specific thing that was revealed that one super important time, namely, how the world will end.
And most of the Book of Revelation (including the part quoted in the video) isn't even about the end of the world, its about judgment of Israel and Rome.

If anyone is interested in reading any of the major religious texts I was able to get a free Bible, Qu'ran and various other books online for free by approaching religious and non profit groups. All of which were high quality and beautifully illustrated works There are many groups out there dedicated to teaching their religion to those interested for free. My closest Mosque for instance is well over an hour away so when I wanted to learn about Islam I made and cultivated close friendships with professors and Imams with folks online. Do be careful though - especially with Islam there are many people out there who have dedicated their lives to either demonizing or radicalizing it so make sure the people who are teaching you have no motivation other than the spread of their gospel. Although I am now atheist/agnostic I spent about two years practicing each of the five major religions and each comes with incredible beauty and meaningful wisdom. Good luck on your journey.

This was a very interesting video for a Muslim like myself. I feel we feel a bit differently on what was discussed as islam's view of the apocalypse, but I think this video would hopefully at least make more people curious about this topic in and of itself.
I bet the amount of work put into it just to make sure you try not to misrepresent these abrahamic religions must have been something! All in all, great video!

It's funny how all of these apocalypse stories focus on one tiny corner of the planet. It's almost like the humans writing these books only had a small reference of the world they lived in. Really makes you think.

What this video seems to fail to mention is that Apocalypse means "lifting the veil," or revelation. It was written with a lot of imagery to hide its true meaning from the pagans. When saint John wrote the Apocalypse, there was a persecution and the main purpose of his book was to give christians the hope that all these persecutions will end and that Christ will be victorious. That's why Rome is called "Babylon the Great", or that the Beast, who is really the Roman Empire, has a number, 666, instead of being called Nero. You can't read the Apocalypse of saint John litteraly without losing its true meaning.
But that is so well hidden that for almost two thousand years, no one cared about that contemporary meaning, and instead read it as the end of the world. Esp. because Christ didn't return soon, like John most probably assumed, and the whole thing lost much of its meaning.
After all, this is not theology but mythology. And as far as stories go, the "end of the world" interpretation was _far_ more influential than any historic reading of the text.
The problem is the fact that there are various interpretations isn't brought up in the video, makes the video incomplete and sort of misleading, because the futurism understanding WASNT the most prevalent for most of history, it was partial preterism or historicism that was usually taught and the future end of the world interpretation only became the most popular in the 19th century when a presbyterian invented dispensationalism

Technically speaking, AN apocalypse is a revelation: "apocalypse" is Greek for "uncovering", as in, "revealing". It just so happens that there was a particularly famous revelation in Christian mythology, namely that one in the Book of Revelations, where God revealed to John how the world was going to end. So THE revelation (or in Greek, the apocalypse) came to mean that specific thing that was revealed that one super important time, namely, how the world will end.
And most of the Book of Revelation (including the part quoted in the video) isn't even about the end of the world, its about judgment of Israel and Rome.

Here's a fun fact: in biblical talk "forty" doesn't actually mean "40" it just means "a lot" - so during the flood when it rained for "40 days and 40 nights" it just meant that it rained a lot and they didn't keep track.
If anyone is interested in reading any of the major religious texts I was able to get a free Bible, Qu'ran and various other books online for free by approaching religious and non profit groups. All of which were high quality and beautifully illustrated works
There are many groups out there dedicated to teaching their religion to those interested for free. My closest Mosque for instance is well over an hour away so when I wanted to learn about Islam I made and cultivated close friendships with professors and Imams with folks online.
Do be careful though - especially with Islam there are many people out there who have dedicated their lives to either demonizing or radicalizing it so make sure the people who are teaching you have no motivation other than the spread of their gospel.
Although I am now atheist/agnostic I spent about two years practicing each of the five major religions and each comes with incredible beauty and meaningful wisdom. Good luck on your journey.
