That's the greatest endorsement I've ever seen for an MC's greatness. A fellow great MC was nervous to PRECEDE, much less follow, him.     Dope reaction! finally more of this freestyle. I recommend reacting to K.A.A.N., insane spitter, you might want to read them lyrics along the way. Rap God Remix is a good song to show off his skills. Also, here's some facts on this freestyle;
    Black Thought himself mention that this freestyle was a mix of written, improvisation and off the dome. Let's not forget that Thought also did tons of off the top freestyle back in the days, trying to make it sound as written as possible, after 20+ years, he might be on another level, beyond the fillers.
    Here's a bars that goes over so many heads (pasted from genius lyrics btw): "Ayo, My new name is eighty-five X's, Coz i'm the rap game certified specialist."
    -Reference to founder of the Five-Percent Nation (also known as the Nation of Gods and Earths), Clarence 13 X, as well as invoking one of the key aspects of Five Percenter thought.
    The Five-Percent Nation sees the world’s population compose of three groups: 1) 85%, which is made up of those dumb, deaf, and blind to God and knowledge of themselves, 2) 10% who have knowledge, but use that knowledge for personal gain (including governments, the media, and religious leaders affiliated with those in power) and 3) 5%, the Poor Righteous Teachers, who have knowledge of self, work for the betterment of their fellows, and don’t follow the teachings of the 10%.
    Black Thought, whose parents were both members of the Nation of Islam, converted to the Five-Percent Nation after the death of the his mother. His familiarity with the worldview of Five Percenters is seen in an article on the 25th anniversary of Paid in Full:
    Roots rapper Black Thought can still remember the impact of Paid in Full and how “The R” changed things in hip-hop, particularly by introducing the teachings of the Five-Percent Nation to rap. Five Percenters, as the Nation’s followers are called, brought a heightened sense of spirituality to the music with their ideologies based on many Islamic principles.
    In taking on the name of “eighty five X’s,” Black Thought is identifying himself as the force to X out the 85% of those deaf, dumb, and blind rappers.

    The hardest bar is about Henrietta Lacks. Double meaning "like Henry Lacks up in the cells" meaning jail cell and Henrietta Lacks cells a black women who's cell are still used today in cancer research. Henrietta Lacks (born Loretta Pleasant; August 1, 1920 - October 4, 1951)[1] was an African-American woman[4] whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line[A] and one of the most important cell lines in medical research. An immortalized cell line reproduces indefinitely under specific conditions, and the HeLa cell line continues to be a source of invaluable medical data to the present day.[6]

  • @_coachcraig_
    @_coachcraig_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This was not off the top. He said most of it was written down. BUT, he says the order of the bars came during the freestyle. It wasn't one continuous written rap. "Web" as in world wide web and/or web of trouble. Also, "We like Henrietta Lacks up in the cells" Henrietta died of cancer, but the government used her "cells" for cancer research (still do). "up in the cells" also references the continual state of incarceration of the black community. "Panther mind. I'm made of elements you can't define" (Vibranium). This is the best freestyle of all time. He had a couple of missteps in here, but who can go 10mins straight with this much control, poise, flow and substance. I say NO ONE!!! One of his last line "this sh*t for Combat" was a shout out to Combat Jack who died only a couple of days after this freestyle. Great review!

    "we're like Henrietta Lacks up in the cell" ..bar....bar...bar....Just look up who she is....man...!! ( " Walk on egg shells...sleep on a bed of nails".......LOL...watch how you move in Philly....) It's what I call a free flow...Some may be written, some may be free "flowed" (previously written or thought of), some may be free-styled...but all pieced together on the spot, to fit a specific flow/rhyme scheme....to a random beat....(still difficult...especially to pull it off this smooth).... I still bounce around reviews of this just to hear it...lol Keep Pushing!!

      @@iKaanic Oh definitely not....lol...It took me a few takes because there is so much...but it's like you said, this isn't ordinary, it's going to require the average listener, to do research...especially if you're just listening for punch lines...because it won't be your run of the mill punch line...there's a lot of between the lines in there...even at the start, he actually is referencing one of the Roots' albums, " THINGS FALL APART" When the center's to weak to hold yall, Im just collecting what yall owe to my old jawn." Written or not, he is a rare machine!!

    If you’re unfamiliar with Black Thought, and to question his freestyle, is such an abomination. He’s a rarity in emcees. He’s one of the few that doesn’t write anything down.
