I love John. He is a holy man. A very rare and evolved soul. It is my greatest dream to travel to Bakewell and sit quietly on a church pew and talk to John on a cold and rainy afternoon.

I’ve been up since 3am with incredible agitation, as today marks the fourth anniversary of a very painful loss. There are other worries on my mind, just difficult circumstances.
I had a video suggestion in my news feed, and here I am. If I had the means, I would come and sit in the stillness, to learn how to quiet my entire being through osmosis (I have a feeling just sitting quietly in the presence of someone like Mr. Butler helps and strengthens weak ones like me) . I love the example of the potato.
I have Brother Lawrence’s book, and this inspires me to read it again. Thank you for your hopeful and calming words.

We are created as spiritual beings the awakening comes from discovering the presence of God/Jesus as an individual person. As the relationship deepens so the presence of God is an integral part of you. Something that is always there and naturally becomes in every facet of daily life. Being still and letting God's presence soak in visually, audibly just listening. Setting aside the busyness of the world and finding the Joy of God's presence.

I love the description of working with your hands, paying attention, anticipating the motions of the plate, analyzing the dish soap, etc.. What about different parts being one is so good? What's the aesthetic basis for the value of "oneness" and "ever present stillness" as opposed to some alternative? We take the same route to work every day, but we never truly know it, not because of some undiscovered detail but because there never really is any knowing something. Well, anyways, that dish soap talk really did it for me. Push all my buttons, John!

  • @Serby665
    @Serby665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Up to this point, I think I understood that you can feel the presence of God, or love, in a still field, in grass, in nature, or in the focus of the present, say, on your work.
I think you can also feel it during your pain, or suffering, as it helps you overcome it, and come out stronger. Or if it helps you..
However, I cannot bring myself to find neither God, nor love, in the suffering of others, be them humans or animals.
Yes, you can see love in those that try to help, but I'm not able to see it in the pain of others.

Sometimes it's a case of craftmanship versus practicality. For instance, I'm an avid reader, and I love the smell, feel and look of books. However, because of the unfortunate ubiquitous nature of deforestation, the Kindle is a practical solution to this problem even though it lacks the artistry of producing a nice leather bound edition.

Interesting point about how joy can be experienced even in what seem to be mundane activities. Remember well my forestry days, planting trees on a hillside in the pooring rain and experiencing God's peace and joy in just doing my work. The things of God are often not logical to our natural human perspective. The brain can be a huge stumbling block.

I know a few young people scared about living outside the digital world, they feel safer, more natural and better there, and the perspective of being outside is as scary to them as for us is being gone from the present, our subjective present, because the world is changing. Is then the digital world the creation of God too? Is this part of the whole too? What is present then? :)

Thankyou John..you remind me of my own dear father ,who through being born in a era of simpleness and respectful ethics;made it a delight to be around and capture such integrity in its purest form..kindness and goodness you can pass on to less invested beings.
This is a characteristic we should all build upon in our life’s..strive to be kinder unto others and kind unto ourselves..
This is a beautiful world and God designed us to stop ,and see it ..the sky,the flowers the birds;it’s all there if you look.

But after my mid 30s, it has sli jpped a bit. Working for moeny in a job which does not give you the satisfaction of seeing a job well done wears out that peace. Even if the job pays well, it takes your ability to dwell in joy

Dear John and Phil. You really caught me by surprise when you said you can spend too much time in front of the computer, or just "watching" things...
IF you're going to watch something, and if you have 1.5 hour of nothing better to do. Then watch this:
    th-cam.com/video/bkL94nKSd2M/w-d-xo.html
It's a computer game, but not like any you've seen. If you wanna see what's being created today, and what makes young(er) people weep from the sheer beauty, watch this.
The game is called "Journey". You play a character who, essentially travels through a beautiful, dead world to reach the summit of a distant mountain. I think you will find the subject matter familiar.
I know a computer game could only produce the most dull representation of a true spiritual journey, but this is the most sublime piece of digital art I've ever seen. And whenever you talk about these spiritual matters, and the Stillness etc, I think of this game.
I would love to hear your thoughts on it, should you decide to watch. Thanks for all the work you do.

He us an old man who has largely lived his life doing what he wanted when he wanted.
He has virtually no answers but to retreat into himself.
That might actually be a viable course of action in an increasingly atomised world.
What is not so apparent is how his advice has any relevance to an increasingly urbanised society. Just how do a family with young kids, housed in concrete box surrounded by incessant noise, faced by constant financial uncertainty and authoritarian governments attacking their essential identical find somewhere to retreat to?
I think John's only advice for those in that situation would be silence.
    But his voice is soothing.

the omnithis omnithat stuff is just an attempt to describe qualities of god, it can't be done - in the effort of doing so you've already narrowed your view too far. It is futile, you will always end up like the blind men identifying the elephant. Without bad what is good?
