Around 9:30, the technique is Gene doing lip buzzes, or oscillations, while also humming. Since the lips produce tone he gets to harmonize with himself. And since he’s providing so much harmonic structure by himself, Hiss is free to do trumpet and other things overtop
You always bring such a unique perspective to beatbox videos! I hope beatbox fans can share this around the community as its really valuable feedback and appreciation for these kinds of group music videos. The acapella community has a lot of experience and success with this format and its a helpful perspective for the beatbox community as more beatboxers try to produce these kinds of videos with more regularity!
A great video to check out if you really like gene is his song metamorphosis, his vocal techniques in that are incredible and his breath control is out of this world

A cool beatbox piece you MUST watch is “Ticking Away” by Beatpella House which has Hiss in the team, it’s a Korean group with insane beatboxers and one really nice female vocalist, they also collaborate with a beatboxer named Dharni here, there’s a lot of them in this one video but this video was an absolute BANG, you must watch it before Christmas bro trust 🙏

Not Christmassy, but Beatpella House "Ticking Away", which Hiss produced is a must. His productions are so clean and allow you to fully appreciate everything that's going on.

HISS and WING actually did a colab for a Beatbox Christmas Medley around a year ago. "Beatboxer Copy Medley Christmas Special" i think its called, seems ideal lol great video!

Also I like your technical approach to beatbox but I LOVE that you FEEL it! I don't beatbox but isn't this just incredible? This track in particular is one of my favorites!

9:41 for your curiosity this is “Lip oscillation”you basically vibrate your lips and use your voice at the same time, the first time Gene does this in the piece, he basically voices the same pitch his lips are doing, next time he brings it back, it’s octave’d while being different notes, kinda like to make a two note chord by yourself, you could also do this without your voice having to be falsetto. So yeah that’s lip Oscillation for you, pretty easy sound too you could probably land it in a few weeks.
(TLDR: It’s a vocalized fart sound 😂)

If you wanna check a quick beatbox Christmas video you can watch Berywam - Christmas Medley (Beatbox), its only 1 minute but it gets you in the mood. Maybe you can mix it with another video or something, but its definitely worth.

How is beatboxing NOT a form of acapella? This mind-boggles me
Of course beatboxing is acapella. But because there’s sort of two groups with different fan bases that have different emphases and tend to do different music genres it helps to distinguish those two groups. Acapella groups where most members are dedicated singers and beatbox groups where most members can beatbox and usually compete in beatbox tournaments. The terms are messy because acapella groups include beatboxing and beatbox groups sing, but there’s no better terms to refer to each of them.
One of the reasons he covers beatboxing on the channel is because it’s a kind of acapella in the broader sense of the term. But he also needs a term to refer to the more singing focused acapella groups that he has more experience with and that most of his core audience comes to watch. Hope that makes sense.
