I attended a battery presentation where one of the speakers referred to concerns about battery size as psychological. Well over 90% of our trips are under 100 miles. When I go further, I can charge. Spending $10K on an extra 100 miles of range that I’ll use twice a year is not a good investment.

That was exactly the logic I used and ended up deciding on the SR+. It comes down to what your regular driving will be, rather than buying for the exception.

Well that and the car itself will _TELL_ you that you need to charge and redirect you to the nearest charging station as soon as it gets to a certain battery level... so range anxiety shouldn't be that big of an issue.
When you also plug in the actual distances between the 2 models, you're only saving like an extra charge or 2 at most per trip (assuming you don't go cross country).
A trip I plugged in with the Model 3 SR+ from my house to Disney World would take about two 15 minute charges. The LR would only take one 15 minute charge.
$10k to save an extra 15 minute charge? No thanks....

In Poland for instance SR+ costs 199.000 PLN (44.500 euro) that is ok for government bonus for EVs cheaper than 225.000 PLN (50.000 euro). So you can get a bonus of 18.500 PLN (4.150 euro). Long Range exceeds gov level because costs 245.000 PLN (54.500 euro). So SR+ is even more affordable in comparision to LR: 54.500 - 44.500 = 10.000 euro + 4.150 grant = 14.150 euro difference!

Great Video, But the new Model 3 LFP Battery is a game changer. Range is still less but better plus you can charge to 100% everyday rather than 80-90% and very little degradation over time. After a few years you may even have a better range than the Long Range. The Long Range will still be faster, have 4 wheel drive and the sound system is brilliant. But the range is much less of an issue. Keep up the great work and Thank You.

Very happy with my choice. You mentioned nickel and dime for the minor changes, but that is no different than other manufacturers. Just had the homelink installed today. I agree 110%. In 2017 when MS was more expensive, I had to make very similar decision. Range wasn’t important as we don’t do many road trips and have an ice backup too. To get lease in my budget, dual motor, FSD, hepa air filter, and largest battery were eliminated. I got a RWD S75 with about 240 mi range and have loved it. Installing a home charger helps considerably. Since lease was done, had same issue on ms refresh between long range and plaid. No brainer again as 3rd motor, insane acceleration, less range, etc isn’t worth $40k more to me. Hell, for $40k more I could buy both a new ms and m3. Can’t wait to get yoke!

One thing worth mentioning is Supercharging speed. Sure the Standard has an OK range, but sitting at SC the last 90-100% takes "forever", where as you can leave the SC at 80% with a LR and still have better range then the SR at 100%.. Just a thought if you are going to do lots of travel in any Tesla. :)

  • @alanh1505
    @alanh1505 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I usually enjoy most of your videos. However, I think you missed a few key difference between the SR+ and LR versions. Specifically, besides having a larger battery, the LR version charges much more quickly than the SR+. That means that not only would you have less charging stops when making a road trip, but each of those stops will be shorter due to the quicker charging speed. Also, you mentioned that the two cars are identical in looks. However, the badging on the LR has "Dual Motor" on the back trunk, so that's certainly a noticeable difference. Lastly, the LR All-wheel drive is not only for colder climates, but will give you better traction and safety on rainy days or if in mud. Just my thoughts...

If you're someone who never really needs the rear seat heaters for whatever reason, I guess you'd totally be okay not having to pay extra $300 as part of the selling price of the car, and save that money. If you decide you want the heaters in the rear seats, you can then pay extra. Just makes the car a tad bit more affordable.

I work about 10 minutes from home so SR would fit me perfectly but there are times, as my wife and I are getting older, we like to get on the road so the LR is a better option.
I live in Virginia and I've only driven my current car to SC, NJ, DC and MD. But that being said I'd like to have a car incan get as much mileage from and make less stops to charge.
While I'm not a true audiophile I do like premium sound in my car. I have a 600w self powered sub in my current car and each bedroom I have a TV in I have a theater sound system on them. My wife on the other hand doesn't care about all that stuff.
I'm considering a Tesla LR next year but I also got my eye on the Nissan Ariya, Kia EV6 and maybe even the Hyundai Ioniq 5 as well as the VW ID 4. So wonderful to have choices.

  • @dkhundley

New SR+ owner here. I’d consider myself an audiophile, and while admittedly the LR is better, it’s worth noting that the SR+ is still better than most cars in general. Coming from a Kia Soul and a wife who drives a Kia Sportage, my SR+ still blows those sound systems out of the water. Interestingly, I think the new 2021 features available for all new models are even better than like a 2020 LR model. Heat pump, motorized trunk, and chrome delete are amazing.

Like you, I weighed the options v the cost and went with the SR+, which was delivered last Friday. I’m loving the car, and it certainly tickles my tech button big time!
I certainly understand those who go with the LR or the P version. So this is just my very humble opinion. Like you said, each person should weigh the cost v benefits, consider what’s important and essential, and then choose.
I think it’s safe to say, no matter what version you get, chances are you’ll be very happy with the car. I sure am!

I do want to get an EV and probably a Tesla. I do, however, find the way they dole out features kind of gimmicky. I.e. having the hardware and simply not enabling it. The SR+ is already an expensive car. But, I suspect competition will eventually dictate their approach.

I originally thought I was going to get the LR but based on my average miles driven each day/week, I ended up getting the 2021 SR+. The sound system is decent and acceleration is nice. I love my car and don't regret getting it. But I do know that my next one will be a LR mainly for the better sound system. The faster acceleration would be good too! The AWD would have cost me after taxes another 10K on top of the 48K I already paid for the SR+. Even if I go 2 vegas I still must charge at least once even with the Long range! Honestly I did an overnight with the model S LR, the SR+ M3 & the AWD long range M3 & for my lifestyle & 80% of ppls lifestyles all they would need is a SR+! I've never had range anxiety at all as I know what my car can do. 2 miles per 1% so I get 200 miles on a charge give or take. The 90 extra or really 60miles of real world miles is definitely not worth it!! Its mainly for ppl. Who live in snow & need AWD. If you drive over 200miles per day with Uber or Lyft or another company then deff. Get the LR in black so you can do Uber Black & lyft luxury! Figure out which 1 best fits your lifestyle & surroundings. Remember after taxes, loans, destination fees, registration fees, etc. The car is way more then 38K! This went up for me 2 47K then I got the seats white leather for 1K & even after the rebates it was 42K... not a cheap car & I had 2 put dwn 9K to get 500 per month payments! The AWD is 800 per mo. Easy if you only put dwn the least of 4.5K! Great car but make sure you can charge it at home! If not it will be an inconvenience 4sure!

Just want to add this as an important difference. 2021 SR+ model (at least here in Norway) is made in China, with a new battery type which can be daily charged to 100% battery (recommended by Tesla at least once a week) while the LR uses different battery type and is only recommended to be charged 80-90% on daily. So for me sticking with the SR+ makes the difference a little smaller for everyday range compared to LR

We took a 4,800 mile road trip in the y, and it does charge a little bit slower, and it tends to be way over conservative and how much charge it needs to make the next destination.
It also feels lighter and more fun to drive. The long range why feels heavy and boaty.
SRY is full premium interior, seats, sound system, steering wheel, and fog lights are all active.
I don't use the floor mats that came with either car. 3d are way better
