      You are just a few years older than me, but I remember watching it in 1975 at 8 years old, and I absolutely love the roller derby, and I like the older roller derby better than the more recent stuff. Maybe because it’s nostalgic to me.

    Roller Derby used to be a fairly popular sport to watch on TV in the 1960s and 70s. I remember as a kid my family tuning in to watch .Our favorite team was the LA Thunderbirds

    • @ZackfromNoHo
      @ZackfromNoHo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Whoa Nellie! That was one of the catchphrases of Derby announcer Dick Lane. The L.A. T-birds vs Bay Bombers rivalry wasn't as big as the Dodgers vs Giants of baseball, but it was a real thing. Nowadays Roller Derby is mostly played by women in semi-pro leagues. I have a friend who used to play in the Dallas Derby Devils league in Texas. The players give themselves cool derby names that made it more fun. Great sport!

    Finding this is a treasure. My family use to go to Kezar pavilion on Sundays to watch the roller derby matches, we'd also go to the Oakland coliseum arena and the Cow Palace when they played there too. My favorite memories are when the roller derby would have their games at the old San Jose civic auditorium. We'd have dinner at San Jose Joe's then head over to the game!!!!! 👍

      I agree in so many ways. I’ve watched some modern Roller Derby and it is nothing like this. Heck, some of it isn’t even a track and I have no idea what they are doing. Just a bunch of blocking (they weren’t even moving) and no rolling and it is on the floor. Odd I tell ya. The old roller derby is the best.

      Modern roller derby is a watered down lazy version. No continues motion , blocking from the front,not the back as you are skating forward, no bank track with rails. No coed teams doesn't cut it. The uniforms must come back the spandex uniforms have to go. The skaters of today are so out of shape and lack the intensity of the past. Let's leave sexual preferences out of the game. In the past it was not an issue. Kick ass men and woman it was exciting! Bring that back I'll be a big fan again and people will come and fill arenas . Not like today. What certain people touch, they ruin!

    geographer 4 fun The rules are pretty simple. 5 players each team. Up to 2 "jammers" per 1 minute "jam". Jammers start at the back of the pack and have to skate through then around the track again before they can score by passing the opponents. 1 point per jammer per passed opponent. First jammer can end the jam after scoring 1 point. There are other rules but, really, pretty much anything goes as long as you didn't get caught. It was fun to watch at 10 years old. Just kinda funny now.

The Bay Area Bombers were pretty good entertainment back then, I was about 14 or 15 then and was in to motorcycle by then, but when I was stuck at home (a lot) this would fill the void. The forgotten sport. Considering today's political climate, it could make a comeback if you could pit the SF Dems vs the Tampa Bay Reps. I'd pay $40 to see some Dems get knocked on their ass.

      @@freddymarcel-marcum6831 with VR you don't have to have guts. it's a completely immersed alternate reality. If you get hit, no one is hurt.

      roller derby would honestly be a great VR game... even just reviving real life roller derby with augmented reality for people in my generation would be awesome. Ubisoft released a game I can only describe as "if roller derby incorporated american football" and it's so cool but it kinda flew under the radar. I'm imagining a huge open air rink in some sunny place like California where actual roller derby teams compete to get a digital AR ball into a very real net while also jostling each other.... that'd be pretty awesome.

      Sandy Dunn turned 71 last January. I recall she retired from skating in
      1987. Roller Derby games were few and far between by then. The peak
      years were 1968 to 1973. Just think she was only 28 in this video. The last I read she moved to Arkansas to take care of her elderly parents.
