I'm 58yrs old with an old soul. A late starter in my endeavor. Just a local nobody here in florida, but with a big dream to keep these greats alive. Trying to pay tribute to the Great Men OF Song, including this wonderful man. I watched a few You Tube documentaries about him just to capture who he was as a person. I sense a wonderful soul, a good man and a strong man, that's is what I see. I love his voice, I love singing his songs. My purpose as a vocalist/ tribute artist is to keep this music history alive. we MUST honor and recall our history, music history is a vital role. My favorites I sing Portrait of my love, Softly, Real Live Girl, This Is The Life, You're Improvable, Yesterday, All My Lovin, On Days Like These, Over The Rainbow, and I'll Never Sing another Song. Here in the states, sing to the senior 65+ community..I usually get the "lost stare" me when I announce, "Next up a beautiful song by a wonderful mans man Mr. Matt Monro". Then I hint, We have a Sinatra..but the U.K has him! You know..Born Free or From Russia With Love" then comes the "Ohhhhhh, Ahhhh..of course". For me it's a huge WIN. They NEED to know, honor and keep to heart him, his songs, sound and accomplishments. God's blessing on your family. Thank you.
I am almost 57 and am exactly the same as you. I grew up listening to my parents' music.
❤ what a beautiful statement. God bless you sir whoever you are and I'm sure you're not a nobody xxx
I'm 59, and I too appreciate Matt Monroe since going to my dear friends funeral where Matt Monroe was singing a beautiful song, it was just last march 2023 I first heard of him, what a terrific voice, on days like these was played at my friends funeral and it's stayed with me, we should keep all the greats alive and kicking forever. ♥️♥️
Matt Monroe didn’t get the recognition he deserved..,,.he died in the 80 s broke he worked driving a bus he se his nickname the singing bus driver....very sad ....Elvia loved his voice and would fly him out for personal shows....
How lovely to read all your comments. You are second generation, I'm 78yrs and experienced Matt as he started out, he is certainly someone who will never be forgotten. I believed her meant every word he sang, he was that kind of guy. Please enjoy him as I did those years ago ❤
Vastly underrated and misunderstood singer with a voice like velvet.
Matt Monroe is irreplaceable indeed.
I was singing this song when I was 12 and now at 68 am still singing this song.
When my husband died 11 years ago of cancer, this song accompanied him.
He,' so relaxing !
I hope you are still singing, god bless you. X
That's beautiful, thank you xx.
Abeautiful song by my idol matt monroe.
@@camsamdan yes i still do.
Such a voice, smooth and seemingly effortless, simply beautiful. Plucked from obscurity as a London bus driver. His rise with fame then fall and rise again only to be taken with alcohlism and cancer taken too soon Dear Matt. RIP. This is my fav ballad of his. Xxxx❤
Thanks for your comment. It's great to know some background information about this man with the most amazing voice.
I really loved this song of matt Monro, together with my friend s of yesterday,we cry, I'm 68 yrs old,
I just turned 69 and always loved his born free but this made me cry. His voice is absolutely beautiful!
Born free is my favourite. But this one is great as well. He's just absolutely brilliant.
He’s fantastic! Listening end of September 2024
One of the best singers of all time 💗
All you need to know about Matt Monro is Frank Sinatra wrote that Matt Monro was the only singer that he'd pay to see.
Wow
@@jacintalevendal377kl
Played at my husband's funeral 9th September 2022. Miss you so much Frank.
So absolutely underrated a singer, and so absolutely and unfairly left out of discussions of the greatest singers of the 20th century.
He wasn't underrated
The greatest singer we in the uk have produced ever,
Yes, and tom Jones. Engelbert humperdink aswell. Matt has the soft gentle voice, very very special.
And he always sang live, he did not need to lip sync or pretend! His voice was so warm and inclusive, you always feel that he is singing just to you!
After all the years. Until we meet again Dear Mother❤
It's no surprise that Matt was known as "The man with the golden voice". Legend.
Matt just nails this. Unbelievable quality..
You nailed it with your comment. A hauntingly beautiful song masterfully sung.
My husband died 10 years ago 61 years old this sung at his funeral because I was with him and he left me softly
So sorry 😔
I'm so sorry...
I played this song at my son darrens funeral such a lovely song i often listen to it ❤❤
I am only 25 and I am in love with this song. ❤
Likewise! Played at my grandparents funerals
@@DVStrikesBack I feel sorry to hear that. 😢❤
You have great taste.
Watch the Italian Job. Great film and matt manro sings the song.
You then have class,,x
Heard this tune for the first time ever Tuesday at a funeral , what a tune ........... R.I.P. Shaz ! Thanks Matt
There’ll never be another Matt.
I grew up listening to this wonderful voice, thanks to my mum. It would've been her 85th birthday today, but unfortunately 2 years ago today, she was rushed to hospital, and passed away on 30th July. We played this at her funeral (along with Matt singing "Somewhere") and it was beautiful. A beautiful, yet sad song, that brings sad, but also wonderful, memories ❤
I'm getting pretty old and I understand that I'm in the sunset of my years. I've written out a list of songs I want played at my celebration of life service when I pass. This one is at the top of the list.
@@nancytisdall5168 If you see the Elvis Presley version of this song. In it, Elvis tells the story behind this song. It's really very sad, once you know the story.
@@nancytisdall5168
Who gives a fuck !
This man sings beautifully..
Appreciate the artist who has been deceased for many years.

My Dad passed away two weeks ago and we laid him to rest on Friday. Myself and my cousins carried the coffin into the church to 'The Impossible Dream' and carried it out to this beautiful song. My Dad's favourite singer and now mine forever more.
So sorry for your loss...and very touching tribute. I miss my Dad. God bless you.
Softly as I leave you
So so sorry for your loss, I lost my dad in 2021 whom I adored and always will, I listen to Matt Monroe and always think of dad bless his heart, and I too will listen to Matt forever more, fantastic singer and beautiful songs. ♥️♥️
That is so sad😢
@@pamjackson9052same here what an awful year!
The voices of great singers have the ability to transport you through time, I am currently in the 1960s and enjoying life.
My dad said he was always a legend his voice was the best I lost my dad in December and matts songs are on repeat now. And this song means so much to me now.
The sad and untimely passing of Matt Monro left a big void in the wonderful but now forgotten songs of yesteryear. He was one of the last of the great crooners. This great and plaintive song befits our memories of him.
Still brings tears to my eyes😢...I'm 85 years old & still remember when this song was released. Thanks Matt Munro...
..
Nothing like a little Matt to make your day better.
I love all his songs! His voice is very beautiful!
Just one of the songs played at my dad's funeral. He was a big fan of Matt also Jim Reeves. an era never to be seen again. For the record he also loved Connie Francis.
I played this song for my late Father's Funeral. Matt was a long time
favourite of my Father's and he was always singing Matt's songs. We
were eating out one night, and a waitress walked up to my Father and
said, "Excuse me Sir, but are you Matt Monroe" My father was so
delighted that someone recognised him as Matt Monroe. My Father
even sang like him. But he passed away 10 years ago. And so it was
fitting that someone thought he was Matt Monroe. I play Matt's songs
now, to my dying Mother, and she really appreciates listening to him.
I think she finds his songs comforting. Thank you Matt. r.i.p and rest
in peace.
One of the very best male vocalists about at that time, even Frank Sinatra said that he had the clearest diction and annunciation of any singer that he had ever heard, but of course we already knew that in the UK.Sadly lost at an early age.
Matt Monro had a unique warmth in his voice that no other singer from any era could equal. He put his heart into every song he sang and it's no wonder that today he's finding new fans all over the world, while most of the singers of his era are fading into the foggy night...what a gifted singer he was!
Yep Robert there's no lip sync from Matt.
Robert Townsend And Engelbert but their voices were just different.
I absolutely love him, just discovered him this year.
I used to love to hum the song at work when I work as a nurse
Another one (only) for me: Cliff Richard - who is 'unknown' in the US but huge in the rest of the world..😍
I love this song, Matt had such a beautiful voice, it's like an angel singing. ❤❤
I’m 70, married to the same lovely lady more than 40 years, and I pray when the time comes that I pass away before her because my eyes are filled with tears at the very thought of life without her 😔
Awesome! Unique! Irreplaceable!!A song that will always push the button.
Remarkably good, Matt Monro always gives us a sweet memory, a touch of eternity, the quiet joy of a song's story.
Matt the man with the golden voice.❤ love it❤
Me and my dad’s favourite singer. Naturally played this at his funeral. ❤
Beautiful, as usual. Especially when you think it was played at his funeral 10 years later❤️ So poignant.
All his romantic love songs superb nakes me cry that d luved ofy life gets back to d great wonderful memories just as his music played. That's I've love his song w a ti k in my heart.
This will be my funeral song. Love it
@@nigelholland24 Born Free for me. They'll be howling in the aisles by the time its finished.
@@nigelholland24 That is the story behind the song. A man who was dying wrote this for his wife. Very moving .
A class act... indeed Matt Munroe was a great act. I hear his voice from the past and in the present truly one of Britain's best singers... what a talent, still we can hear that melodious voice of his thank God for Matt Munroe...
Oh my ....im in love with tears..😢❤
This song is so beautiful, it just goes straight to the heart, and leaves as tears...
What a gorgeous voice!
He just makes it look easy
What a great legend he was
Thank you TH-cam for this recommendation.

Died too young. Wonderful classy singer who always sent goose pimples down my spine even as a child. Never forget you💕
That’s what a baritone is all about.
Fabulous breath control!
Matt's songs and singing will never die a thru classic voice that you never get tired of that lasts to this day and beyond
Our Matt Monro with a golden voice and that's why he will never be forgotten with his crystals voice that is so unique as the singers singer!💯❤💖
A superb singer , sadly missed !
This song is beautiful I think of my grandson who went to heaven aged 21 i miss him so much
How sad … my sympathies.
I wa brought up listening to this wonderful voice. I'm 69 now and this song was played at my mums funeral 1o years ago. She loved him as do I. I listen to him a lot at home.
Very few singers can master phrasing, interpretation, tone and musicality like Matt. The Maestro!!
Love all his songs but this one standout the most !!! I heard all his songs when I was in primary school in yr 3. He had such a warm and soothing voice. 👍👍🎶🎵🎼🎙
Listening end of September 2024 thinking of the love of my life that was killed in a Navy crash in 1990.✈🙏🏼
I do so wish matt was still here to sing. Gone too soon. I hope he's singing to the angel's..bless him.
Matt owns this song, the definitive rendition.
I thought he did until I heard Michael Buble sing it. Opinion purely subjective. Both singers do an excellent job I just prefer the sound of Buble's voice
The best sound track of a James Bond movie
Voice like velvet ❤
I really love his voice so relaxing .🥰
My dad loved this song god bless my dad 😢
Beautiful song 🎵 ☘️🕊🇮🇪♥️
He was one among my favorite singer singing love songs
Matt Monro. Exquisite. Legend. Awesome. Perfect.
No singer comes close.
What a beautiful song, so vary sad but just so touching, 🌹❤️
My mom waited until my son had left the room then she left us softly. My heart will be broken forevermore. Love and miss you darling 💔
Such an enchantingly beautiful song. I miss this era. Fortunately, this 62 year old man had an opportunity to experience this moment in history.
He died at 54 years old
@@davehindmarch4795The commenter was referring to himself, not Matt Monro, from what it appears.
what a beautiful voice, timeless songs
A song @ my Mother's departure. From my Father who departed earlier. ❤
I heard this song first from my father's grammophone when I was seven years old. Then I heard it several times years after that as my mother loved Mr.Monro's songs very much until she got the cancer. At the last days she wanted me to hear this song as her last words before died in 2007 and left me forever .... ... I am 55 years old, now adays while I hear this song again I always remember my mother's last words as same as its lyrics ... I love this song very much .. I do miss my mother ... 😔🌹♥️
😊
One of the most beautiful voices ever..
A true beautiful voice
There are many versions of this song but this is my favourite
I listen to him every week, someone so special, so important this performance . . .
I remembered this song from my parents playing it when I was young and wasn't sure who sang it, so have just listened to about 10 versions and none compare to Matt's performance and arrangement - which needs ro be kept subtle as it is here IMHO.
Beautiful.
Matt had the best male voice of any English man ever in my opinion.
I agree but I also love the voice of Ken Dodd listen to him singing The River.
He surely did he was just the best
Beautiful voice
This was the first time hearing him sing where I caught a British accent. Never new he was born and raised in England.
I've read that Frank Sinatra thought Matt Monro was the only British singer worth listening to, and I agree. Despite the odd brown outfit and the drab backdrop, that mellow voice wins through without the need for theatrical antics, dancers etc. The sustained final notes were superb.
Well it was the 70's - The decade that fashion forgot! - Sinatra's actual quote was this - “If I had to choose three of the finest male vocalists in the singing business, Matt would be one of them. His pitch was right on the nose; his word enunciations letter perfect; his understanding of a song thorough.”
So true!
@@MattMonroNot a fashion statement for sure.
Matt the Voice you can listen to every single day and never be fed up with This Man sadly no longer with us what’s a terrible loss to the world he simply had one of the best voices I have ever or likely to hear again. Rest in peace Matt
This was played st a friend's funeral today, the tears are still flowing listening to this now.
im not even born in his era, tnx to yt.. truly songs of yester years was mgnificent and immortal. im in my 40s now, i grew up loving grunge music but now i appreciate this classics. so smooth
What an excellent Singer really, he sings with such feeling, he makes me feel,
Perfect pitch and power..gorgeous❤️

If i had to pick my greatest 100 songs of all time i,d have to put this one in it
Wonderful singer.
I really love to listen to this song, it's so meaningful but little sad. A lovely song to say goodbye to someone beloved.
Great singer of all times !!

No one sigs this better than Matt 💚
Many artists sang this but Matt Monro is the best!❤️👍
Wonderful voice Matt❤️
What a beautiful voice. Makes me very emotional.
Just enjoy, perfect songs and superbly performed....wallow.
My Mum loved this and she introduced me too it. Ty Mum❤
I have loved Matt since forever.
This song is actually about a person leaving to be with another. But whatever connotation, it’s magical.
Matt owns this song that's all.
Memorable song😢😢
Beautiful song 🎵. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. In Love 💗 and Light ✨️
I remember him winning Opportunity knocks many years ago. I thought he was absolutely wonderful.
Matt didn't appear on Opportunity Knocks - his first hits were way before the show existed. Matt Monro Jnr appeared on the later reboot of the show but didn't unfortunately win it.

Oh I thought he did. Sorry, my memory must be going, as well as everything else. 😂
