    I have an Ultranova and it is a mindblowing monster. If you gave one to a 5 year-old and told him to change one parameter every second for the rest of his life, he would not have got to the end if he lived to be 100 years old.

    FANTASTIC REVIEW!!!! Exactly like anyone who would sit down in front of all three for the 1st time, trying get the best out of these devices in a short time. Loved it!!! Tired of all the indepth reviews where one only sees and hears planned, practiced and knowledgable interaction that would hardly ever exist in the real world of the average consumer. You should present more reviews like this!!! Thanks again.

No need to be so rude and hateful in your comments. And go ahead - try and take a dump on me for my statement. I'll just ignore it.
      And one more thing: are you playing keys or any instrument for a world renowned, well respecting, big-selling artist? I know of someone who is ;-) And even if you are - it doesn't give you a license to be hateful.

    Is this a thinly-veiled attempt to move some of their old XL+ stock? In fairness, I don't think the others have caught up to Korg's DSP algorithms. I know the build quality might be questionable, but sound-wise there's a reason music producers nearly always have some variant of the MicroKorg in their studio.

    I've had the UltraNova for a few years now and I love it. It's modeling synth and you can really get into the structure of the filters and LFOs plus hundreds of waveforms but in order to easily edit the sounds you to have your laptop connected to the UltraNova running the editor/librarian. I wouldn't put it in the same class as the MicroKorg because the learning curve on the UltraNova is considerably steeper. When you're playing live the knobs are touch sensitive, all you have to do is touch them instead of actually twisting them.

I think the ultranova sounds have the same gargly raunchy sounds which i hate, but it also has a lot of 80's type sounds, which i use a lot. All around i think the ultranova has the fuller sounds plus full keys

Two questions, do you mean Techno-Trance position 5 on the left knob, and more importantly, is that exact sound available on the normal Microkorg? Can anyone help me? Is the exact sound Jack uses on "Techno-Trance with arp", found on the Microkorg? Thank you!

    The main powerful featute(s)
    Comes from initializing the whole patch (shift and then click the right button on the program area)
    Go right until you see initialize
    Then you have a initialized patch program drums
    Then click the first of the two digital engines
    Hit menu
    Go to the right until you see tone edit
    Enter tone edit, scroll until you see oscillator waveforms
    Then you can pick PCM
    From there go back left until you see the word saw, from there you can choose from about 120-140 digital and physical waveforms
    You can layer three waveforms, each “partial” can have separate settings by means of pitch, filter type, unison, PWM some waveforms are sync sweeps
    Also the effects edit lets you sync the delay and change the reverb and distortion type
    Overall the JDXI is great for the price and offers a relatively fair amount of sound design
    The flaw is that partial editing is kind of a hidden feature in the menu, shift and scrolling is your friend with the jdxi
    I do wish Roland would allow for partial crossfading between the three selected waveforms. But yeah, if you don’t mind having to scroll through the menu to sync the LFO, dial in unison settings, portamento, waveforms, and fine adjustments. Then the jdxi is the right pick.
    I do wish I got a blofeld instead, but when I do get a blofeld I’ll be able to have a full song creating session with the jdxi and it’s rompler style attitude, alongside my korg minilogue and it’s powerful baselines :)
    Can you guys do a video on the blofeld please?

    Minonova would've been a better choice vs Ultranova - same sound engine as the ultra, but has smaller keys like the korg and roland for comparison - but it has the more immediately obvious arp/animate pads which are great for realtime control, and a massive filter knob which is really unique, and the matrix style amp/filter envelope controls are super quick to get to a lot of controls too.
    Still, great video and thanks as always Jack, only just realised that Andertons have split their channels - I hope this works out well, i quite like the concept.

    • @rodzeroher
      @rodzeroher 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had both, the ultranova is far better to program sounds, in fact the best of the bunch with econders+buttons for each section. To edit the oscilator waveform on the mini you had to go under three menu levels, horrible.

    • @Skijumptoes
      @Skijumptoes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I got both ultra and mininova, neither have failed after hundreds of hours - point i was making that the mininova is more of a comparison vs the other other two, being smaller keys and the additional realtime controls via it's pads, and characteristically large filter knob.

    • @Skijumptoes
      @Skijumptoes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's why i think the Ultranova (In my mind) is a class above the other two, and mininova would've been better for comparison purposes.

    • @pontram
      @pontram 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One may think that the Ultra beats everything out ot of its' two competitors here - but one should first know that size doesn't matter and secondly havea look at the specs.
      Jd-Xi is MUCH MORE powerful than Ultranova AND Microkorg XL combined.
      It has 128+1 Voices Polyphony, 4-Part Multitimbrality and 4-Track pattern sequencer (thats what is ment when it is mentioned that there's a lot under the hood) - it's basically a Music Workstation.
      Its original price was nearly as high as the UNs', went down first and now both are nearly the same here in EU. But of course is the UN much longer on the market - 4 or 5 years longer I think. The REAL competitor for Jd-Xi would be the Nova or the Supernova 2. They had the Multitimbrality which Ultranova lacks (and in some incarnations, more voices).
      So, Jd-Xi and Ultra aren't really competitors but do perfectly complement each other in a setup.
      The Ultra is MUCH better to handle in terms of sound design and sound manipulation (Aftertouch !!), while Roland fruitlessly TRIED to keep up by giving as many knobs and switches as possible to the Synth, but finally gave up by omitting a Software-Editor !!! If you want to edit the Jd-Xi, you have to buy that software piece (or to fiddle with the free version which is currently in alpha state).
      Jd-Xi has much potential as an accompaning workstation, while you play the main part on the UltraNova, in a live setup. I think that Jd-Xi was never really meant as an independent product - it's an appetiser for its bigger sister JD-Xa.

    I have the Ultranova & the JDxi, they are a world apart. Plenty of space for storing sounds on the Ultranova, plenty of excellent sounds with unlimited programability. The JDxi synth SOUNDS are only available within a pattern format, a rather limited amount of sounds, you do not have a separate synth section for storing sounds, they must be stored within a pattern. That makes it no more useful than most grooveboxes, or in other words it is a groovebox with a keyboard. Just my experience.

    • @billyjackotoole7909
      @billyjackotoole7909 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you please explain the difference to me? I'm brand new to this, but wouldn't storing one sound in one track suffice for this? Or is it using a built sound on multiple tracks is limited?

    • @DAVEMYZTIKAL
      @DAVEMYZTIKAL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@billyjackotoole7909 Hi, its only when you get the JDxi and try to program a sound, then you want to store your new sound, then you realise that it has to be stored in one of the patterns. Most synths have a user bank where you store all your user sounds, 200, 300, or 500. But not so on the JDxi. All sounds must be stored in patterns. You may need to watch more TH-cam video tutorials to get a good grasp 0f it.

      Thought the same, but mind you, there's quite a big level difference in the recording between the JD-XI and the Microkorg, so it's easy to be fooled by the volume too. There are some great demos of the Roland out there. It's definitely the one I'd get out of the three.

    This comparison is missing a lot of information. It doesn't really cover the differences in the synth architecture or the sound quality of each engine which are the actual selling points. The whole point of a synth is the actual synthesis. This treats these more like Casio keyboards then actual synthesizers. I personally found very little useful discussion of workflow and differences in programability in this video.
    Also why is the super nova in there? Should it not be the mininova? It's much more comparable to the other products and is actually a direct competitor in this class of synths.
    This comes off like they don't know these products at all.

    Good sense of humor and a good little mess about in synth land. Not a full review, and that's alight.

    If you want to see what can be done with just a Roland JD-XI, then checkout my SBN Music Videos in the playlists section on my channel here. I have a Roland JD-XI, and I am making phenominal music with it, but the vocoder is pretty crappy with the little gooseneck mic. If you get a real mic, it's better, but I don't really use it all anyway. The Korg sounds the best, the Novation sounds good too and has a ton of sounds, but the JD-XI has the drum machine and the synth sounds on it, so it's definitely the best workstation out of them all. If the Roland JD-XI had more sounds, and a couple more better sounds, there would be nothing beating it on the market. I have had the Roland JD-XI for three years now, and everytime that I get on it, it is a new experience everytime with creating new music, and I only use one of a couple sounds most of the time. I haven't even experimented with half of the sounds yet, but this is called a hybrid synth because in the menu there is a ton of parameters and different capabilities that other synth/drum machines do not have. The tone edit and program edit is where the magic happens. If you have any questions, I'm here...SBN

    The Novation Ultranova is a great synth but its still analog modeling and lacks the power of the other two synthesizers. If that is a detail that you dont mind then the sound presents and features are great and worth the price, alone.
