Special Olympics World Winter Games Austria 2017: The Africa Wrap!

  • The Special Olympics World Winter Games took place in Austria this year, showcasing 2600 athletes from 105 countries. 130 of these athletes were from Africa region, representing 7 countries on the continent in four different sporting codes.
    Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Namibia and Nigeria competed in floorball, and Kenya and Uganda, Nigeria and South Africa took to the floor hockey courts. South Africa also competed in figure skating and speed skating.
    For the floor hockey teams from Africa, it was often a tough journey, sometimes being much smaller than their opponents. But the teams persevered, making it through divisioning and on to the competitive rounds. Every Program took podium places.
    In one instance, two floorball teams from Africa, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, went head-to-head for gold and silver in a match between brothers.
    By the end of the Games, the stamina of the teams showed, taking home 14 medals, including 8 gold.
    For Africa, this year was one of triumph.
