    this guy is great, because you can tell that he could explain things a lot more descriptive, but that would make it more complicated to understand, so he talks in a way that the layman can know what he's saying.

    • @63Baggies

      If an expert can't explain what he or she does; they don't truly understand what they do.

    • @AEvans853
      @AEvans853 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@63Baggies I wouldn't agree on that. At least not on a level that the layman can know what he's saying. To explain complex things in an easy and still acurate way is a skill and quality in itself. It's not nessecarly related the area of expert.

    I have to disagree with Lanier in one point. And that is that VR can harm people outside of the view point that a central manipulating system is wired to this problem. What I'm talking about is the same problem a lot of gamers find themselfs in. It's about escapeism and personal problems and drepression. People will abuse the VR to escape reality like for example plaing world of warcraft to escape the harsh reality the may otherways have to face.

  • @justmadeit2

    I have zero interest in virtual reality. Reality, face to face with other people and having real life experiences is what its all about, as much as i live on TH-cam, a virtual world doesnt appeal, in my opinion. And where it's heading is slightly worrying.

    I love this guy. He's right about everything. But I'm not optimistic like him. Most people aren't willing to hear this at all. They don't want to believe they are being manipulated. I believe we are being manipulated and I have deleted my Facebook and Twitter, and have lost many "friends" in the process, who are not willing to communicate any other way. But I can't yet bring myself to do the same with TH-cam or Instagram. Even knowing and believing these things are not good for our lives, it's hard to follow through.

    • @yogini326
      @yogini326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a hard time imaging how I will engage with the digital world if I give up my social media accounts. They seem to be the trajectory point for all my online interaction and content consumption. If I don't engage with Facebook, Twitter, IG, and TH-cam, how do I connect easily and efficiently? This is what I struggle to understand. I think the answer may be to simply, 'jump ship' and the answer may present itself. Super interesting stuff in this video.

      yes. Years ago, when I first ran into FB, I joined. I left it entirely shortly thereafter and never joined Twitter or any other. I do not like any of it. There is too much going on there that I feel is destructive, and not just the "manipulation". People get too unreal there for me. Integrity and real sharing is too meaningful to me. Life is too short to give up that part of us and others.

    • @positivitysuccessvideos
      @positivitysuccessvideos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. Trying to give up social media is like trying to quit sugar or cocaine. Suggesting others do so is like suggesting a sugar or cocaine addict go cold turkey. I'm wondering if AR Augmented Reality might allow people to put down our phones and at least make eye contact with each other while still accessing the world of data and digital engagement?

    In the 80s, it was a 'sweet' way of looking at life. Great convo! It wasn't about total global domination for profit back then. Indeed, advertising vs controlling behavior. It was originally fair. Good intentions turned into switches for predictable outcomes. Where is a free society when there are those that monitor and attempt to influence our every behavior? Agree, we become smarter, we evolve, adjust, and see through the illusion. We enjoy magicians, knowing the set up. Again, great conversation and food for thought!

I recommend it to anyone looking for a new way to meet like-minded (or not!) others or to create art or build online. It's just a lot of fun. It is also a great way to enjoy djs or live entertainers. lol Have fun!

    He is brilliant. Someone who retained common sense and honesty when handling a true futuristic advancement in the world. I believe he looks at technology as a help, not an extension of self and it wasn’t about profit for him.
    Now he is trying to stop what he had a part in from getting so far out of hand that society as we know it goes to bits while going against some friends and greedy product/content makers turned manipulators of behaviors.
    You go the money route, you start wanting to be God. This guy is saying that never should have happened. And if Silicon Valley won’t make responsible changes to their business model, we people need to force ourselves to change to be without such things or limit ourselves til it changes.
    People are becoming more fragile. Heck the amount of emotionally unstable people, insecure females and males, and trashy information labeled “empowering”, and horrible things easily viewable by everyone including young children who should never see such things...it’s truly mass suicide is the course we are set for with all this vanity, ungratefulness, destabilization of family, loss of common sense, cult mentality and ultimately a society with the depiction of a patched, torn, frayed ragged quilt we call beautiful and diverse when it’s actually ugly and can’t properly function for warmth or covering.

      i meant that Jaron's inspiration for VR was mainly music. His earliest projects were fully music projects,he went into VR mainly because of that.

    ....Dude, dude, dude....I read an excerpt of Langer's "Feeling and Form" and yeah, she talks about "the virtual" (and virtue, I believe). Yeah! I read part of a text that coined the term "virtual". I saw that (after VR is a reality).

      Does he worry about the fact that this is on youtube, and the effect of this social medium might incentivize us to not take his advice (as an inner contrarian and "rebel" seems to be doing with me now?)

    I found that he only half-answered the most relevant question such as the one on how it ultimately is a systemic problem that requires a systemic solution. I also don't quite understand his optimism around VR. Technology should ultimately bring us closer to each other, and VR will only encapsulate us in ficticious universes. Introverts will not even need to try to be social, they will seek happiness in VR worlds. I see the applications of VR quite dangerous in the highly individualistic society in which we live. We should strive to bring people closer together, not farther apart.

    We’ve been able to live without social media, phones and computers so why wouldn’t we be able to stop or ignore one of these “Tools”?
    I used to love social media and thought that social media is something good i truly did. Until the point where it became negative towards me and ways it did terrified me.
    Today i don’t use any social media tool except Facebook’s messenger app and Twitter because these apps and media are fine with me, Twitter for example is to me a way of interacting with news that interest me and that’s it, i don’t use it for anything else. And Facebook’s messenger app is only for communication with those who are closest to me and those who are involved in my life.
    However Facebook in particular as I mentioned easier terrified me in ways you can’t even imagine and let me give you an example of it, i could go on Facebook and like or comment on something and then a few hours later experience these things in real life either from ads, people or even inside me.
    It’s almost as if i experienced a virtual reality of the things i did on social media IRL.
    This is also linked to having the feeling of being tracked and exposed and to try to understand how this all could be really used to be really traumatizing and terrifying and that’s the main reason to why I’ve removed close to all social media overall.
    And yes i have Twitter and Facebook’s messenger still but these social medias is something can use without feeling these unexplainable things happening to me.
    I don’t sit and scroll any social media at all nowadays and I’m glad to say that I’m not experiencing any of these severe signs anymore I’m also feeling free and less stressed out since i stopped using social media and overall i feel more confident in myself without social media however i will never forget these really scary sensations that occurs in real life because of something that i did on social media.
    My advice to those who’ve read and can relate to me in any way shape or form is to stop using social media completely and never come back to those that makes you feel really bad about yourself or threatening to you like they’ve done to me. There is no need to scroll endlessly on social media or post everything we do in our lives, yes we are all addicted to expressing ourselves in a good way and love to accomplish things and post your pride all over the Internet and in real life as well but the important thing I’m trying to tell you is that you don’t actually need to do anything in terms of progress in your life some things are best to keep to yourselves and your family.
    Just try to stop using social media completely for a period of time and see if you get something out of it.
    Thank you.

    I have introduced many of JL's insights into the course PHI 3013 (Business Ethics) l teach. I teach at a fairly politically conservative university, and many of my students from the Business School trained as they are in Chicago School Economics, you would think would resist JL's proposed solutions as well as his criticisms of the Silicon Valley business model, and the digital culture at large.
    Instead l found the opposite to be true! 😀 There are l believe several reasons why:
    a) His demeanor and presentation is about as far from inflammatory or ideological as you can get.
    b) Though "leftist" in spirit in the sense that he is skeptical about any excessive reliance on systems, and the dogmas accompanying them, celebrating free thinking instead with a subdued kind of anarchic aspect, nevertheless he's "conservative" in the classical Edmund Burke- libertarian sense. A' la Burke he ascribes to a consensus model of governance driven by the bottom-up. He's obviously libertarian in spirit but not in the economic sense (to be clarified below).
    c) Economically he advocates quite a few updated versions IMO of what Adam Smith articulated. Smith was however no "free market fundamentalist" as he recognized and was concerned at how winner-take-all scenarios can emerge in markets, which would eventually precipitate market failure. Also, contrary to many contemporary economic libertarians, Smith was in favor of limited commodification-- i.e. he recognized that certain "public goods" like education and health care should not be privatized nor domesticated by markets. Markets are limited in their effectiveness and work best when you're aware of their limits, is IMO the underlying moral theme of Smith: economics is a value-laden, not a value-neutral science.
    So...if you're an open-minded educated conservative, what's there not to like?
    I don't wish to smack simple labels on how l understand JL's views, since they defy simple classification. What I however find most compelling and refreshing about him (appealing especially to the scientist in me-I'm a mathematical physicist by training, and worked in areas like quantum computation) is his utter humility in the face of the very ideas he suggests. He avoids dogmatism at all costs by constantly reminding everyone of the need for data-driven methods of reform.

    How is it precisely that this type of advertisement polarizes us?

      I think Johnny's more concerned about his health and longevity than his packaging. And I think he has a point. It would really be a shame for Jaron, his family, and all of us if he died 30 years early just because he did "whatever the fuck he wants" in one aspect of his life. Unfortunately, we can't all just do whatever the fuck we want and consider ourselves moral. We have to realize that our actions can have profound impacts for better or worse on those around us and on the world as a whole.
