- Traxxas Mudboss! Beginner basics, prepping the car for oval racing.
We go over how to:
Foam bust, and prep your tires for more traction
Clean and prep the transmission
How to change your cars offset
How to calibrate your throttle and put the car into race mode
Real high level stuff for the drivers new to the Mudboss racing scene
Best video you guys have ever made!
You two are really something special.
@@jjhardie449 totally agree and glad you realize that too
Looking forward to run video and hear what you think after improvements
@@BC-rc here’s a video we did of the car after improvements. If you scroll to the end, you’ll see this car up against a stock Traxxas MB and an OG Salvas.
What's the Difference? Traxxas Mudboss compared to the Salva's Mudboss. Is one faster?
th-cam.com/video/Fn5ecpKt3lg/w-d-xo.html
Very Good Explanation of what to do to get the car race ready. What weight oil do you suggest putting in the Diff? Thanks
None. Just a light weight oil to keep things lubricated. I’ve tried diff oils and I just found it slowed the car down.
Now, some successful drivers do use it. But I’ve talked to more fast drivers that don’t.
But, if you want to try it, I’d talk to the drivers at your local track and see what they run. But I would try it without first and see what you think.
Kyosho 1000 grease lets its slide so yo can set up the corners... works great
Now that you got it turned can we see difference between stock and tuned

At the end we put this prepped car, versus a Salvas, and a box stock Traxxas Mudboss.
Ours definitely had some more in it than the box stock. But we will see how the new Mudboss performs against the box stocks in an upcoming race this week.
Great video guys.
Gents, pro tip. MIP speed tips and a small electric (I use a DeWalt) screwdriver to get all those dang screw’s off quickly. 😂
@@RomanGaslan lol. Yeah. You’d think we’d do it that way at this point. It’s only been 3 seasons of tearing these things apart.
Basics my Ass! That was a complete teardown. I did like the video!!!
I also think that the droop in the rear end is a bit to much and the front is a bit stiff can’t wait to see you make a video about what to do on the suspension
@@kylekallies3381 we were debating that last night. I think the right rear is going to wind up with some heavy oil in it. But we will see
Black springs in front
Only question I have about putting oil in instead of grease is don’t you need to rebuild the transmission/ differential more often?
@@kylekallies3381 not really. Maybe every 3-4 months? I finally rebuilt my OG Mudboss trans after 6 months of constant racing. That had the grease removed, bearing seals removed and light oil. Nothing ever broke or wore out. The transmissions are pretty tough. This new one is almost overkill for oval racing.
Unless you are throwing a 10.5 or lower turn motor in, these trans should be good for a long time
What shock oil ? And limiters in shocks
@@larryknight8416 at that point it was just stock oil. I’ve swapped it out. But I really can’t recall what I put in it. Just heavy oil in the right rear. No limiters. I just adjust ride height with the shocks.
At this point, I bring the car and I’m always putting someone else in it to race. They say it handles alright, but I’ve only raced it twice. We just don’t have large enough fields.
Hey how about putting some links down to some of the equipment you guys use
What is the reasoning behind “no reverse?”
@@buckdashe2571 races don’t want people reversing on the track. One to not cause more wrecks. 2 the safety of the marshals coming out on the track to get cars
@@BloodlineRC makes perfect sense
No shims on idler gear or the top shaft?
@@1dirtovalracer nope. The trans was shimless. At least ours
@@BloodlineRCHumm.
@@1dirtovalracer humm?
Beautiful family. I would love to take your remote off your hands. I've been wanting to upgrade just don't have the cash.
So you just swap right side hexes front to rear?
Yep yep. A RF BLACK. LF GREY. RR GREY. LR BLACK.
Since you posted it, I've been watching this video regularly. After a 30-year break from racing, the Traxxas Mudboss (modified) reignited my passion for racing and the RC hobby. I finally took the plunge and purchased one yesterday. Luckily, there's a race for newcomers at my local track this July 4th holiday weekend. Your helpful tips have been invaluable, as getting back into the hobby after such a long absence can be daunting. Thank you for this, and please keep these videos coming.
@@RageeRC I had the same thing. Raced from 85-91. Then didn’t race again until ‘22. A lot has changed. But this is a great car to start with.
One advice, drive this car hard! You’ll do better by running in deep and on the throttle, then backing off. Finally raced mine yesterday and after a few years of having to drive smooth with a loose car, it’s tough getting back into the hammer it mentality. Did alright but one of our locals really has the driving style figured out
@@BloodlineRC: I just completed the differential rebuild. Inside the diff itself with the spider gears - after cleaning, should I use silicone diff fluid (40,000) or white lithium grease? What would you recommend?
@@RageeRC I don’t like a trans with diff fluid. I run it open. I’ve tried it. But I found it adds drag and slows me down. I just run the diff nut all the way down.
For lubrication. Just light weight sewing machine oil. Or some 0/20 synthetic oil.
These things barely wear. I’ve run the same parts for a year or two and didn’t have any wear issues.
White lithium is fine. But it does defeat the purpose of cutting back on the drag caused by heavy grease.
Typically we also clean out the bearings. Removing the heavy factory oil and putting in light oil made for rc bearings.
@@BloodlineRC Aaron or Kyle: Is there someone I can reach out to ask for a set-up sheet? I have a few more questions to ask as well. Can I reach out on Social Media or Email?
@@RageeRC yeah. I’m working out some of the kinks. I took it for its second night of racing and it did pretty well. Hit us up on Facebook. Bloodlinerc and I’ll share my notes
So zero oil or grease or anything went back in the diff then?
@@jstump1972 we just use very light oil to keep things lubricated.
These initial rule sets coming out calling for the stock radio to remain I think is a good idea. As this is generally geared more to a hobbies, as opposed to a hardened expert, think about how much spec classes, regardless of racing style get killed. Flourishes when the hobbyists get into it and then it gets killed when the experts come in and do what experts do. Crush.
-U10
That’s what is going to happen unfortunately. Maybe in a month or two we will see new competitors come out. Guys without race experience. Right now, the only people I see running this class are veterans from the Mudboss class.
The stock controller rule is great. But it does impose a limitation to left handed drivers. That’s a manufacturer problem though.
Manufacturers need to consider the lefties.
@@BloodlineRC thank you for thinking of us ha! I’m a lefty and since 1987 driven with a right handed radio. There wasn’t much love back then either. -U10
@@Ultegra10SPD I’m a right handed guy, and I’ve seen plenty of left handers at the wheel. I don’t know how they manage to be as good as they are with how they have to hold the controller.
It’s ridiculous traxxas doesn’t have a solution.
You guys should buy some and make them race ready charge extra 100 or so
@@ericford3115 lol that’s a lot of cars to build!
That’s why I wanted to get this car, so we can show everyone how to get it ready to race.
The experienced guys, jumping into the class, already know all the tricks. I want to see the new drivers keeping up with them.
will flipping the right rear arm add more toe on the hd arms? also will that help with turning?
@@duanesapp4914 I think it would be possible. The HD arms have the same holes, on the back side, as stock arms.
But depends upon track rules. For our box stock classes, and Salvas, that’s not legal. So, I haven’t bothered to try. But it looks like it should
Definitely not a Midwest modified you could call it a sport mod or a ump modified or A modified but it’s definitely not a Midwest modified because those are completely different style all together
I have done 5 transmissions an this 1 by far the worst i have done! What was traxxas thinking with that black grease an the thick clear grease? My gosh smellled like rearend oil out of my 69 chevelle hahaha stinking stuff! Lol
can barely hear you guys my volume is at 60
You Deff lol
Turn it up😊
@@justinm1150 sorry bud. We will do something about that next time
@@BloodlineRC not sure i had severa; comments asking me if im deaf and to turn it up but the commericals blew my ears no worries
@@justinm1150 TH-cam does run the commercials loud. I always have to hit mute when a commercial pops up. They are practically yelling on the ads
You guys could be dangerous with power tools. Safety first.
@@1dirtovalracer you should see the outtakes. Kyle almost lost an eye
Does Salvas not want to pursue expensive litigation against Traxxas for this (especially as trigger happy Traxxas is when it comes to dishing out litigation)? -U10
They did not trademark the name.
@@Ultegra10SPD there’s lots of speculation why Salvas didn’t. The most popular, Salvas is in Canada, so it was a lot of legal hurdles for their group to TM it.
But the name Mudboss has been used by many companies to market products for this class. So it might be hard to lock down the name Mudboss at this point.
Traxxas is now changing the name from mudboss to modified due to all the backlash all over the internet about the name
Did you remove the inner seal of the carrier bearings facing the diff?
Yes. I removed the inner seal. But left the outer seals on
@BloodlineRC thank you very much, sir.
Thanks guys, very informative. I would suggest you guys getting some mics so I (we) could hear you a bit more easily.
@@kazman18 thanks. We will figure out something for the next one to improve that!
Isnt adding the washer for the wheel hex considered shimming?
@@whoknows3347 adding a shim or a bearing to the right front is completely legal! Shimming the slop out of suspension parts isn’t allowed. But this has been an accepted practice at every track I’ve run at, with box stock and Salvas rules.
I use the exact oil but I add a zinc grease for bearings high friction an all metal to metal contact. I rub it on an get rid of any excess. Very small amount. It actually rolls better. I never add more after a rebuild... the grease penetrates the metal an coats it.
Good video but it comes apart alot easier by taking the upper shock towwer from the chassis and the 6 screws on the bottom, to get to the diff. Im still loving/liking the channel.
@@Cougar5099 nice. Good to know it can come out easier. After I get back from nationals, I have to get some video up of putting a wrap on these bodies
I think you can take out magnum 272 r transmission without disassembly just take out front two screws on rear shock tower and bottom screws on chassis then whole back end will drop off then you can pull out diff without disassembly of transmission
@@derrickgray3114 you can. But we wanted all the grease out of it. That heavy grease is a power killer
Just washing the tires with simple green makes alot of difference. Pb blaster will ruin the rubber. Sticky kicks is some good stuff but many tracks don't allow tire sauce thats where the blaster might be better since its not technically compound.
@@garagebrosEthom1 it can make tires deform, if you over do the PB and the tires aren’t properly glued to the rim and you add way too much heat.
But yeah, simple green can soften the tires. One thing we probably should talk about, what to do to get a car ready between rounds. Simple green works great to clean the tires, and seems to reactivate tire prep.
I like Papa Willies tire tenderizer for helping to break in the tires too. That stuff works pretty good on new rubber
I’ve run into serious issues with my new racer pushing into and out of corners.. almost seems like they need heavier springs. Have you run into the same issues?
@@AdamPedersen-l9v yep. The car does push on entry and exit.
I tried pushing the rear shocks to the outer holes on the a arm and the LF to the inner hole and the RF to the outer hole. That helped.
Crank down on the RR shock collar and if that’s not enough, crank down on the left front. That should help make the push more manageable.
The next thing we will try is heavier oil in the RR
WD-40 is a cleaner!
Great advice for new drivers. 👍🏼
Good information. Just did the diff on mine last night. Id recommend some body braces as mine rubbed pretty bad with stock offsets at the track.
@@joshgill1447 the body is really floppy. I don’t know how long this body will last. Im surprised the made it this thin
LIft the rear body mount up one hole ... helps drag as well
Just out of curiosity, if you had an old transmission and your transmission and your new car crapped out, could you put an old transmission in the new chassis?
Yep. With no problem. Someone claims to have swapped back to the old tranny. Car ran a bit faster they said
@@BloodlineRC it probably would because you're taking a bunch of weight out of the back of the car that you don't really need. The only thing I really like in the new transmission is the seal differential. that's it. I do like the shocks too someday they'll be allowed .
@@1dirtovalracer I agree. But, I’m not a guy that runs diff fluid, so I’m fine with no seals.
It is overkill. But it would make for a fun 10.5 class.
Where did you get that foam Buster at
Off eBay. I’d recommend the foam buster from LCRC. That might cost more. But it’s going to last forever. These 3D printed ones don’t take a ton of abuse. A year of use and it’s ready to be replaced
I will be purchasing 2 of them in August and I am looking forward to racing them. These will be my first rc cars in over 10 years. I'm going to try and do the work myself after I get them. I will probably have to watch your videos a few times to get it right lol. But thank you for sharing the up grades and still being stock.
Definitely curious to see how it improved performance.
Would it also help if you switched the fr and rr tires along with the hexes ?
