Red flashes indicate that you are at or above a certain speed while going past a given point. Getting a number of them on a course gives you a course specific title. Hakone in MT2 and 3 gives shooting stars rather than a red flash.
I have to say that none of the super replay videos I posted were ME doing the run. I lack the ability to get a video and audio direct hookup to the machine to get a good quality video. -.-
