  • Harvesting Three New Sweet Potato Varieties | Guten Yardening 2021 Sweet Potato Harvest 2021
    After over four months of waiting, we are now ready for this 2021 sweet potato harvest. In this raised bed garden we are growing three, new to us varieties of sweet potatoes: Carolina Ruby Sweet Potatoes, Okinawan Sweet Potatoes, and Centennial Sweet Potatoes.
    These new varieties of sweet potatoes will provide new colors and tastes to our already wide selection of sweet potatoes, and more importantly, this adds to our overall summer harvest as we put food into storage to prevent a food shortage.
    One of the main issues we had last season with our sweet potatoes was vole damage, and this year, we attempted to stop some of that damage by placing food safe black plastic down. This worked well for our first raised bed, but you will see the results of this raised bed, and you can judge for yourself whether or not this was a success.
    We hope you enjoy this sweet potato harvest 2021 video.
    Thanks for watching.

      We need a video called: "Checking Out Of Vole Motel!" Once we get them fully under control, that is. :) We still had some beauties, so it is hard to be upset. Especially those Centennials. They were huge. :) #teamsweetpotato

      We definitely appreciate the food that we are able to produce. Anything we can pull out of the ground and eat makes a huge difference for our family. :)

    A sweet potato taste test would be great, please showcase their appearance (inside and out) as well.

      Thank you for the feedback! We will definitely plan for one, and we will look at average harvest size/shape (for us) in addition to appearance and taste. Have a wonderful day!

    Yum yum again! Haha, I'm having a bowl of steamed organic baby potatoes right now. I cut off the ones that started roots and will plant them, too. I have my other ones in paper bags at the moment (may try them indoors after I get over an ear infection). Getting ready to post a new (very short) video of my red potatoes in the styrofoam chest. Ha, I live in Carolina and used to live in Okinawa. : )

    I'm sure glad we don't have Voles down here! Our Moles are bad enough but I haven't seen them around since the cats & kittens moved in. I'm wondering if hardware cloth might help keep them out. Do they come in from the top or bottom (or both)?
    There's still a lot of good food there in any case!

      Moles eat grubs and bugs.
      They won't touch your Sweet 'Taters.

      @@SgtSnausages Thank you for that. I wasn't sure if they would bother plant roots so I just try to plant enough for everyone. I haven't seem much mole sign since I started feeding, catching & neutering the feral cats & kittens last year in any case.

      We haven't had to deal with moles here, so thank you Jason Paul for that info. We have had a lot of folks suggest cats, but unfortunately that isn't a pet we are going to get at this time. That being said, I think some sort of hardware cloth might be the best solution as it seems they are coming in both the bottom and the top. It is going to require some additional work, but I think we can make that happen.

    Team Sweet Potato here biting nails!!!
    Overall, love the size and varieties!!
    I’d love to see a video comparing sweet potato tastes.
    I’m thinking a screen below and above might not be a bad idea!!!

      We will be working on a taste test video soon. One thing I am not sure many folks know is just how different the tastes on these sweet potatoes really are. I personally think (so far) the purple have the most unique taste, but stay tuned, and thank you for watching. Have a wonderful weekend!

    Did you buy your Okinawan as slips or did you sprout your own? I haven't had any luck with them either way. Their taste surpasses any of the purple varieties!

    Where did you get okinwa potato or slips? I would love to grow some next year

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! We got our Okinawan slips from tatorman.com this year, but will propagate our own next season; however, it doesn't look like they are currently offering them as a variety right now (and they are sold out for the season anyway). Hopefully they come back next season as they are absolutely beautiful. We can't wait to taste them.

      Thank you! I hope tatorman has them for next year. If not, I am open to purchasing 4-5 slips from you 😀

    • @anamioaranegura8427
      @anamioaranegura8427 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GutenGardening I'm not sure about the variety, I think it's Beauregard sweet potatoes...I bought Korean sweet potatoes from Korea 2 years ago and I grow them but the rats are eating them the most so I don't have many for planting next year... I live in Romania and people here are not growing sweet potatoes... can you believe It? I'm the only one who grows sweet potatoes in my area 😀

    Voles have been very bad here for me this year. It was a first year issue for me,so yes I was shocked and angry. Not a fan of those varmints at all!😡

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they create a really bad problem, and with three of them living in those holes, they really did a job devouring many of our sweet potatoes. We are really happy we had multiple plantings because I otherwise, this could have been really devastating. That being said, the ones that did grow were beautiful, and I am sure they are going to be delicious.
