Easiest way to check is to run the engine and feel the top hose from the engine to the radiator. It will be cold for a while until the engine warms up. When the hose gets hot you know the thermostat has opened. Check the reading on the temp gauge.

Looking into the engine bay, the top coolant rubber hose on the right hand side runs from the radiator to the thermostat housing. The thermostat and the housing come complete when you but it.

To me ,the thermostat has not opened to release water from the radiator into the front of the motor , otherwise temp range should be more around 70 - 80 deg not 90 deg ! How does one test the sensor that is in the middle of the thermostat ?
