Pumpkin flowers open early in the morning. I started out with all male flowers but now have seven pumpkins. This is my first year growing them. Also, I placed a planter of petunias next to the pumpkin plants to draw pollinators. I grow wild flowers all around my vegetable gardens to feed the bees and it’s working well.
I'll try the petunias right now Plenty of bees on a salvia but my flowers not opening. I helped the neighborhood kids plant them but Halloween is coming fast.
bananas take up LOTS and LOTS of nutrients and pumpkins also needs lots of nutrients. But I think your bananas are already established so it's easier for them to get to the nutrients first. Your worm compost urine helps as it has a lot of microbes which make additional nutrients available to the plant which otherwise aren't available yet.
I think you're on the right track there with the nutrients. We were all crying in Europe that we didn't have enough female flowers early in the year. Later when it got hotter it got better. My pumpkins did ok. My melons were rubbish.
me & my pumpkin pants are in a constant battle, with the squirrels.. aslong as i keep them fed, they leave it alone.. but.. when i run outta peanuts... those plants are their very next target.
I had this problem happen this past year randomly throughout the growing season on one of my squash plants. It would have fused/closed male flowers for a while, then fully formed male flowers, then back to fused flowers. Never did anything to help the plant or to try and correct the issue. Just let nature take its course. I opted against saving seed from the plant.
Here in the South US we use banana peels around any flowering veggies. They put needed nutrients back inti the soil. If you have any rotting bananas please try it.
Explain what you mean by using banana peels. Do you put them in the ground or just lay them on top or what? I may need to start eating more bananas. : - ) Thank you, Carrie.
We do all of those things. And last winter I chopped bananas and froze them. In March I baked the chopped peels until I could powder them in my fingers I used the powder to side dress my veggies all season. My plants are still going strong.
I take my egg shells and banana peels and toast them up then put them into the coffee grinder until they are a find powder. Great for top dressing and mixing into beds.
The problem is that your pumpkin doesn’t have enough sunshine. They are under shade. Male flower need long hours of sunshine. Female flower need short hours sunlight. Your pumpkin is under the protection of banana tree from the sun. The female flower is prosperous. Give your pumpkin more sun, your male flower will flourish
I have the opposite problem right now... I got male flowers ... big blooms ... but the females are not opening and the fruit is starting to look wrinkly. Will see when it gets hotter. My region gets to over 110 degrees or hotter in the peak summer.
Lol 2yrs later I have same problem except there's no female flowers but about 13 male flowers that are fused shut and the sepals are REALLY fat & big and twice as long as the bud it also has the white patches in the leaves lol but I have since found out that it does not always mean powdery mildew sorry about that 😲😕but that some types actually have that white in the leaf.... Did you ever figure out why they wouldn't open
I had a similar problem a couple years ago in Ireland, then I discovered my seed where hybrid. Let me know what was the problem, please. I having an opposit problem this year (August 2018) female flowers are not opening, so I need to do all my pollination by hand. And there is plenty of bees as I grow zucchini, pattypan, cucumbers very successfully this summer. Greetings from co. Meath
The problem in the end was a lack of nutrients due to the bananas taking up all the potassium and phosphorous. I cured it with some urine and a strong worm compost tea. Ah county Meath have not heard that place in ages. Greetings from Kerala ;) David.
Hi Krzysztof. I'm in Ireland too. I have plenty of female flowers but no males. Did you get sorted? If yes, what did you do? I feed the plants once a week with tomato feed which I saw somewhere online was great for pumpkin plants. Is this enough do you think? Thanks for any help :)
If female flowers not open add calcium carbonate. Those tablets we take when we have stomac acidity. I made a video on my channel and mentioned this problem
They responded to fertilizer. It sounds like they need more. Also, I notice they are a little shaded by the bananas. Ive never had this problem but I am in a different zone.
One of my male flowers open but I looked in it and there was not stamin why would that be would it because there was a storm the night before it opened ? I would love to know why
I'm having a similar problem but with my female flowers. My pumpkin's male flowers are opening just fine but the females (with the fruit) their petals stay fused and they just fall off and I have no idea what to do about that tho... If anyone has ideas or suggestions I'm all ears!
the answer is milk...put 50% milk 50% water in a jar and water them slowly next to the root for seven to ten dayes and all your flowers will open n u will have alot of femal and mails....shalom from israel
Never knew pumpkins has females and males lol. My pumpkin flowers daily huge ones but not a single fruit 😕. Am I only having males and no females? Plus I do not know the difference between male or female
You needs bees and butterflies for pollination, plant some flowers that attract them, I did and i went out two morning ago and the bee was hard at work, i also saw too small pumpkin ,my first time planting and didn't know if i would be successful at growing them, it was nice to see
Interesting. My butternut squash females are blooming but the males are not (fused also, stunted). I was thinking it was because I planted banana peels in deep below where I planted the seeds. None of the plants where I planted the banana peels are producing males. The ones where I forgot are doing great. Ugh! I also tried worm/compost tea and nothing so far. I’ve lost all my females and there’s tons! So sad. I’m a dummy for planting banana peels
Usually they always open two weeks before the female flowers do. It is really strange that this is happening to these plants. Once I added the worm liquid they opened right after that.
Don't they always here :) There is a time in the day of about three hours where they need plenty of water. Even if it rained that morning. Good point. No water no nutrient uptake.
No No No Big mistake I live in the same climate in Isaan Northeast thailand and I am a farmer Water mellons and pumkims once they have flowered do not need water.Sounds crazy and i thought my thai family were crazy to but they were right and my pumkins and water mellons are in direct sun in my rice fields (after the rice has been harvested) So they will be sucking water up from below as the paddy field 1 month priror had water.Seems strange goes against all logic but i did 2 rie of each and had a good yield we live and learn as they say.I dont think watering them a little would do nothing but good but it does work the other way.i have no idea if this will help with the male famale issue but just wanted you to no my experience with the pumkin (in thai Fuk Tong) lol what a great name

Same thing is happening with my squash... beautiful female blooms but the males are all green and show no signs of maturing...
I've found that you can take a immature male flower, take your finger nail and ruff the stamen some and get enough pollen to pollinate a female.
me & my pumpkin pants are in a constant battle, with the squirrels.. aslong as i keep them fed, they leave it alone.. but.. when i run outta peanuts... those plants are their very next target.
A squirrel I rescued, planted the pumpkins in my backyard!

Oh OK. Useful info. I'm going to try that. Thanks again.
Good idea. Same as with eggshells.

My pumpkin is in totally open area with about 8-9 hour of sunlight. Still in facing same issue.
I would suggest foliage feeding as well with diluted worm acting juice to further supplement nutrient deficiency...
I have the opposite problem right now... I got male flowers ... big blooms ... but the females are not opening and the fruit is starting to look wrinkly. Will see when it gets hotter. My region gets to over 110 degrees or hotter in the peak summer.
I have same problem. How does it work for you? I need help
I am going through that as well now. Ugh. First time this has happened. I just fertilized again with potassium calcium, posphate.
Pinch back leaves around your male flowers to give them more sun they will ONNNLLLYYYYYYYY GROWWWWWW with full 8+hrs of sun!!!!
Try pinching when the creeper reaches chest height so u will get male n female flowers i i succeeded for d first time
Mu theory is to pluck most of the flowers in theory the plant will be stressed and produce more flowers and fruit. I could be wrong.
Thanks for information. Can I use male flower of another pumkins plants ?
The pumpkins, planted by a squirrel, that are coming up in my yard are filled with males and the females flowers won't open.
I have done research I found it is probably the soil isn’t rich enough and need potting soil or not enough sun or too many weeds

Hey...Did you figure out the issue?? Exact issue with my bitter quard...I have more than 15 female flowers but no male flowers...
The reason what the flowers fall & dry the fruit ??
One of my male flowers open but I looked in it and there was not stamin why would that be would it because there was a storm the night before it opened ? I would love to know why
Mine did it after being stressed I believe.
Check your ph first. If soil is too far out of scale the plants are unable to uptake nutrients...
My pumpkins are only producing male flowers! What to do guys 😭😭😭
Interesting video,learn lots of information
dont stress. tell them how beautiful they are and expect nothing of them and they will do fine :)
That's something I'm hoping for. I've got over 100 pumpkins in my backyard. Planted by a squirrel!
I'm facing the same issue. 😣😒... Any solution?
I gave the plant a strong dose of compost tea and that worked.
@@workwithnature Thanks for your valuable reply. I'll follow that 😊 .

I was told fish emollient makes squaah happy. Also kelp.
Hey did your female flowers ever opened?
@@fictionallyflawless9673 Sadly no but I'm trying again this year.
@@cerberusstars682 i am facing the exact problem🥲plz do share if u eradicate the problem
@@fictionallyflawless9673 Will do!
It's been 6 years did you get any male flowers yet 2023 😟
Use Ammonium Molybdate 70 ppm, every twenty days after plant is four weeks
Thanks for sharing

@@gnu3898 regular whole milk ;)

Your plant is small compared to others I've seen and mostly shaded. Not enough sun is my answer
It could be coz I have the same problem with male not growing
I have the same problem with female flowers not opening
They need Calcium .watch my video
im having same problem but only male what do i do arghhhh

Mine is the other way around. I have thousands of male flower but the female flower are dying before opening. What do i do?
I've read it's caused by too much nitrogen in soil
The Male flower you opend up to shows us that theres no pollen wasn't developed yet.
That's the reason there was no pollen.
Mine for some reason is producing male flowers but not female flowers and its been a month. Idk what to do
I got some worm compost and made a strong compost tea. That did the trick. A month can happen though and you may need to just wait a little longer.
@@workwithnature Thanks for the info! :)
@@workwithnature I hope to get some to grow to harvest before Halloween
@@workwithnature i have regular community compost. how can I make compost tea with that pls?

Work With Nature ok
You are right with the nutrients but I think you may be missing the point, I think your plants need water
