From 10 To 100 Pages, How I Wrote A D&D Adventure! [Ep. 13]

  • I wrote an adventure for DnD 5e - really, it’s usable for any tabletop rpg - and this is how the project came to fruition. 💥More below!⬇
    I started out just wanting to write down some notes for starting a new group of players. And then it just kept growing. It occurred to me that I was doing a ton of work I didn’t really need to and I thought, hmm, maybe I should just go all the way and try to make a publishable product. What started in my head as a 10 or 15 page one or two session adventure now clocks in at 108 pages and if played a certain way is basically a mini-campaign!

    From the non-existent dungeon master's compendium:
    1) Def. *Fruit-ition:* (n) The ability to tell the immediate future by examining the seeds of a fruit. Why only the "immediate future"? Which fruit? If you can make that work with *any* fruit seed, you get a +20 on every spell cast for the rest of your career as a "professional nerd"
    ---
    2) Def. *In Medias Res:* (adverb) If you don't already know this definition, then you deserve to start your adventure unarmed, naked and on the run from an angry *posse comitatus!*

    $2.99 is way too low for that size adventure, IMO. If you want ppl to just get it/use it/spread the word than do Pay What You Want. My two cents. It sounds cool!

      From what I have seen 'Pay what you want' allows for the author to set a 'suggested price' so PWYW with a suggested price of $2.99 might be the ideal way forward - most of us will pay the $2.99 and the 'showed up in my suggested items' feed folks may just spread the module around a bit as well

    I love the intro. Having the PCs survive a shipwreck is a good way of throwing disparate characters together. It could be a pirate attack or a full scale naval battle. You can also strip them of most of their gear - players hate this. I once started a Traveller adventure (Traveller is The classic sci-fi RPG) by crashing everyone onto a mediaeval planet. It could have been great, though I should have prepared three ways off not just one 😁. Unfortunately, one of the players complained so much that it killed the game. In hindsight, he ruined a few of my games. Players eh?

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Group dynamics are what make or break maybe all endeavors lol. Yeah I thought about the gear thing so I put in there a note about mitigating that loss of gear if the DM so chooses. Waxed leather bags and cases, etc - not realistic but u know, it’s dnd lol.

      @@tabletopalchemy in Gulliver's Travels, our eponymous hero somehow keeps his powder dry thanks to tight pockets on his tight leather waistcoat (vest). If it's good enough for Swift.
      I'd be very tempted to strip the PCs of most stuff, but I like resource management in games. How heavy is a spell book? Do they use waterproof ink?

  • @frog8220
    @frog8220 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would I spend 2-20$ for a short, clever dnd adventure? Absolutely yes. Do I care about small mistakes, no absolutely not one bit.
    What matters is that it's clever and intriguing for my players, quick to read through for me when prepping. You have the great advantage of having a TH-cam channel where you make clever and intriguing videos, so I'm already convinced this could be useful :)

    Looking forward to seeing the final product! Regarding cost, I have a 14 page conversion document for one of the classic d&d modules that I sell for $2, so you could probably charge more for your adventure. That said, orders pick up whenever it's on sale. And you have a marketing path through this channel which may increase sales volume and make it worthwhile to sell at lower price.

    My tip for starting out a campaign particularly if you are going to drop the players in the middle of the action is to have the players establish preexisting relationships between their character and 1-2 other characters as part of the character creation process. Relationships can be work, family, romance, friendships or rivalries.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep this can work great.

    • @davidmorgan6896
      @davidmorgan6896 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that this is a good approach. I've long wanted the players to choose to be a family of travelling performers or the like, but they have to arrive at this themselves.
      My current thinking is to offer the players choice of the type of campaign: heroic, roguish etc. If they want to be ne'er-do-wells (is that where nerd comes from?) then one option is to have them start as passengers on a ship heading toward a notorious port; its name a byword for criminality. They can introduce themselves during session 0 as they won't be friends, but they will have been cooped up together for weeks. An NPC will tell them that a local boss is always looking for ambitious people - and that's their introduction. They can do hat they wish, but the boss will provide a set of simple steps into the underworld.

      @tabletopalchemy  ปีที่แล้ว

    My man, you are quickly turning into one of my favorite ttrpg TH-camrs! As far as your adventure is concerned, being an avid almost Zealous customer of Drivethrurpg who has given way too much of my money to OneShelf over the last decade I would definitely pay more for your adventure, at least $5.99 even more if you released a system agnostic version or even designed it for multiple systems like a d100/BRP version, a Savage Worlds version, a DCC version etc… With all of the stuff going on with the new OGL and WotC, I would avoid putting out anything under the current OGL, at least for the time being.

    imr is a great way for a group of players to start a new game. Use "campfire sessions" and other in-character exposition and appearance to allow the characters to reveal facets of their characters to each other organically.
    Fantasy gaming runs on tropes, think of them as handrails!
    I don't think that channelling players into the adventure with things like traps, encounters, and roleplaying really counts as "railroading". Railroading is usually about not allowing characters *any* meaningful choices, but some of that is pretty much de rigueur to get an adventure up and running, otherwise the players will just wander aimlessly and get bored (unless your players are all into improv.)
    Your title sounds super-awesome! You are the master! lol

I'm not a huge fan of being on a boat or hanging out on some Island. It does sound like something one of my Rangers would be perfect for. Somewhere in my fx files I should have some rushing water sounds and maybe some wood smashing sounds and mood music. I don't DM often but I love to set a mood when I get the players into action. That’s a great plan - even if you decide not to roll with those particular projects you could certainly do something cool with that time. You’ve got another year I think before 1.1 kicks in so there’s that. And there’s always system agnostic formulations - personally I think adventure modules can always work independently of specific rule sets but who knows?

    I'm excited to buy your adventure! I don't know if you can do this, but I wish adventures had the stat block for a monster actually on the page you need it and not just in the back of the adventure! Or maybe on every page a small like 5 blank lines where the DM can add any small notes for that page of the adventure.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally understand what u mean about the stat blocks. I did that where I could but generally I had to go with a “creature index” because like for example generic pirates could show up in so many different areas. For that reason I built in a hot link system that lets you click back and forth between pages and the table of contents works like a link hub. In actual use I’ve found it fairly decent to work with. The notes area is a good idea too - this adventure will only be available in digital formats for now, I haven’t figured out the printable options yet 😬

      Wow full color that’s awesome. I think there is a way to do print on demand but that again is black and white (aside from the cover) and it’s a whole separate design process - which I might have done had I not grew the project like I did (in other words, if I’d set out to do a printed project from the beginning lol - I was only thinking about running something for myself off my tablet, sigh). I got off the WOTC train when 4.0 came about (and cashed out on M:TG earlier and went back to V:TES).
    WOTC deserves nothing from it's player base, and even less from the people who have invested time and money into making D&D the "it" game it is now.
