This is a trait that was completely left out in the new movie. Leon, while it was his first day on the job, was by no means a sleazy greenhorn "rookie". He still was the class ace, and that's why they had that party planned out before all went to shit. Don't know where Hollywood got the idea for their "Leon" from. Definitely not the Remake, since Capcom made him even more of a hero in that game
Too be fair, both instances with the cars aren't entirely Leon's fault. The Raccoon City car, zombie popped out from the backseat and grabbed him. The Tall Oaks car, zombies were on the windshield blocking his view.
Leon's not a terrible driver, most of the time we see him driving there's something happening that makes him crash, but we've also seen him drive jet-skis and motorcycles fantastically. Ada was originally driving that boat in RE4 and she peaced out before giving him a chance to take the wheel. The helicopter had a zombie in it and he had to take the controls from the original pilots. The plane was already crashing when he got to the cockpit to have Hunnigan tell him how to land it as best as he possibly could.
I’m trying to track down where I originally learned about this, but apparently the reason why Leon’s R.P.D. uniform looks so vastly different in the 1998 release aside from the in-universe explanation is that the developers originally had him wearing a standard patrol uniform similar to both Marvin and the zombified officers you encounter in-game, but kept losing track of him onscreen whenever they would enter an area with multiple zombie officers in it, thus they redesigned his appearance to look unique so he would be easily visible to the player at all times.
Could be why his reactions were a bit subdued for someone who has just seen a zombie outbreak on their first day of work🤷🏼♀️ kinda like "eh, I am gonna die single too, faaaack"

To be fair, in all of those driving situations Leon was either being attacked by a zombie/B.O.W. or the vehicle in question was damaged. The plane crash scene in 6 had both. Helena was trying to keep the zombies on the plane at bay while he's busy trying desperately to control a doomed Boeing 747 that he most likely has no training to fly. I'd say he did pretty good, all things considered.

Before I saw the unofficial credited height of 5'10"(before it was revised to 5'11") in the resident evil wiki, I always assumed he was around 6-feet tall. But after I saw that, I always see him as 5'10"-ish. And to be honest, if I hadn't seen that, I still would have put him at around 6' or 6'1" to this day.

Another fact for Leon, in the novels based off of the games (as well as the non-canon one involving Claire, Rebecca, Leon and another S.T.A.R.S captain) it's very much hinted at that Leon has feelings for both Ada and Claire. Even flirting and holding hands with Claire

Here's some other curiosities about him: Leon mentions the ORE days in RE 4 which is a military training and in fact the darkside chronicles confirms he was in the Socom marines in Operation Javier that are called Socor in the game, due to the games not being allowed to say real names of military and government organizations. But the games files and Leon himself say he and Krauser work for the Special Operation Command (Socom) in that game. That's why Krauser calls him "comrade" in RE 4. Also in RE 4 Leon says he works for an agency under the direct control of the president, basically meaning the secret service cause they are the ones who protect the president's family members, like Leon had to do with Ashley. A missing fact: Leon has his own sixth sense that operates similarly to the Spider-sense, and has been affectionately been referred to as "Leon-senses".
To be fair, every vehicle he crashed was because of the circumstances. Both cars had a zombie in/on them, the boat had been pushed by Ada, the helicopter also had a zombie and he was saving Helena while piloting it and the plane had been opened (I'm almost sure that has something to do with how well it can fly) so he is actually a really good driver/pilot to not have died any of those times.
To Leon's defense, he had no idea what do with the plane, as for his other 2 crashes, well in OG RE2, a zombie was in the back, and in Remake, the road was blocked, in 6, I think a bunch of zombies jumped on the car itself obstructing his vision

I think it's unfair to call Leon a bad driver. More that he's placed in a difficult situation that ended badly for the vehicle. He crashed during RE2 because he was getting attacked by a zombie, RE6 police car for the same reason, Ada was driving the boat and jumped off last minute subsequently driving it into the cliff, RE6 helicopter crashed thanks to the pilot turning and attacking Helena all while flying low around tall buildings, and the RE6 plane crashed when it decompressed and while he was getting attacked by zombies. This is assuming he has no idea how to fly a helicopter or plane and got the short end of the stick to try and fly them. He has proven to be a great driver when he isn't getting his shit pushed in. lol

To be fair, in all of those driving situations Leon was either being attacked by a zombie/B.O.W. or the vehicle in question was damaged. The plane crash scene in 6 had both. Helena was trying to keep the zombies on the plane at bay while he's busy trying desperately to control a doomed Boeing 747 that he most likely has no training to fly. I'd say he did pretty good, all things considered.

@Goat Man - Of course, there is no official height listed that I know of. And our perception of people's height can vary depending on body proportions, posture, camera angle, background entities, other people around you, etc. Hollywood is the master at this. Just ask Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. lol
Anyway, back to Leon. Before I saw the unofficial credited height of 5'10"(before it was revised to 5'11") in the resident evil wiki, I always assumed he was around 6-feet tall. But after I saw that, I always see him as 5'10"-ish. And to be honest, if I hadn't seen that, I still would have put him at around 6' or 6'1" to this day.

Another fact for Leon, in the novels based off of the games (as well as the non-canon one involving Claire, Rebecca, Leon and another S.T.A.R.S captain) it's very much hinted at that Leon has feelings for both Ada and Claire. Even flirting and holding hands with Claire

Here's some other curiosities about him: Leon mentions the ORE days in RE 4 which is a military training and in fact the darkside chronicles confirms he was in the Socom marines in Operation Javier that are called Socor in the game, due to the games not being allowed to say real names of military and government organizations. But the games files and Leon himself say he and Krauser work for the Special Operation Command (Socom) in that game. That's why Krauser calls him "comrade" in RE 4. Also in RE 4 Leon says he works for an agency under the direct control of the president, basically meaning the secret service cause they are the ones who protect the president's family members, like Leon had to do with Ashley. Then in 2011 Leon becomes a member of the DSO (Division of Security Operations, an ingame secret organization of the government that operates as a task force to help BSAA in warzones that use BOWs).

To be fair, every vehicle he crashed was because of the circumstances. Both cars had a zombie in/on them, the boat had been pushed by Ada, the helicopter also had a zombie and he was saving Helena while piloting it and the plane had been opened (I'm almost sure that has something to do with how well it can fly) so he is actually a really good driver/pilot to not have died any of those times.

To Leon's defense, he had no idea what do with the plane, as for his other 2 crashes, well in OG RE2, a zombie was in the back, and in Remake, the road was blocked, in 6, I think a bunch of zombies jumped on the car itself obstructing his vision

I think it's unfair to call Leon a bad driver. More that he's placed in a difficult situation that ended badly for the vehicle. He crashed during RE2 because he was getting attacked by a zombie, RE6 police car for the same reason, Ada was driving the boat and jumped off last minute subsequently driving it into the cliff, RE6 helicopter crashed thanks to the pilot turning and attacking Helena all while flying low around tall buildings, and the RE6 plane crashed when it decompressed and while he was getting attacked by zombies. This is assuming he has no idea how to fly a helicopter or plane and got the short end of the stick to try and fly them. He has proven to be a great driver when he isn't getting his shit pushed in. lol
