The Storm. This is the other spinoff of Journey. 1991 was the end of Bad English for albums. Their last concert was in 1992. Meanwhile, the debit of The Storm was also in 1991.
Bad English came out at a good time in my life, around 1987 and 1988. I was 23 years old, married for 5 years (Yes I was married in high school), and raising my young family while working as a mechanic at the local Ford dealership. We didn't have any money, and there wasn't much to do in our little town in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Our only entertainment was having friends over to play darts or dominos with the stereo tuned in to Pirate Radio. If you don't remember Pirate Radio, you are either too young or you didn't live in Southern California. Bad English got a lot of airplay on Pirate Radio, as did another supergroup Damn Yankees. Sadly, Bad English and Pirate Radio both kind of disappeared, but left me with some good memories. All our friends kind of moved on too. The only thing I still have left through all of that is my wife of nearly 42 years and our daughter. And that's what matters
The Babys were one of the best bands of the late 70s/early 80s. I like both of the Bad English albums. They're nothing groundbreaking, but they were good for what they were.
Bad English was an excellent band, both albums are very good. I was lucky enough to buy a Riaa Platinum album award for The album Bad English and in 2005 have John Waite Sign it, he looked and it and said something like “Oh, wow” and thought It was originally for me, I told him that I bought it on eBay, he signed a few things for me too. I met him one more time a few years later, he offered to sign every cd cover I bought with me, but I asked him which one he loved most and he said “Temple Bar” so I had him sign that one. He was always nice and very genuine, as were Luis Moldanado, Tim Hogan and Rondo.
Not only a fantastic drummer, but can also do credible Steve Perry vocals while pounding the kit. He was really the MVP on the Journey through time tour. I'm just sorry we didn't get some new music from him, Schon, and Rolie.
I seen them once their singer was really good I have the CD but Neal did a cool guitar solo in the middle he played the intro Wheel in the Sky that was cool I'm not a journey fan but their 1st album with Steve Perry was cool

@ Hell yes bro!! I’m still Rocking too!! Lead vocals in a band called Damaged!! I’m 55 and still belting out AC/DC, Quiet Riot, Ozzy and many more!! Never Stop Rockin!! Rock On Man!!
@craigrock8444 what area do you play ? sounds cool btw did you see the documentary of the AC/DC cover band the singer does Bon Scott and Brian Johnson it crazy but they are a good cover band it's called '"my stupid cover band" it's on TH-cam great story
Really? Gold would imply immense success. Schon has put out a lot of albums since Steve Perry - none of those albums were immense successes. I can’t even think of one Journey song since Perry left. Don’t get me wrong, he’s an amazing guitarist but cannot say anything he touches is gold.
You cannot think of a single Journey song that's good since Steve Perry left?!? I'll start with the first album "Arrival". If you can't find a single awesome song on that album then you need to seriously pull your head out of your backside!
I was helping a buddy DJ a wedding for a mutual friend, and the couple had heard this brand new song on the radio and wanted to use it as their first dance. My buddy left between the wedding and the reception and had to go to three record stores to find the song since it was so new. The song was "When I See You Smile." It was the perfect song at the time.
I was lucky enough to see them live when they played the college arena in my hometown. John and Neal played "Missing You' with a clean Tele and it was pretty magical.
a few suggestions.. Lynch Mob, Fine Young Cannibals, Joy White, the Iguanas, Robie Nevil, and Vallejo. Your content is phenomenal. Plz keep up the good work 💯
Those two Bad English albums are absolutely awesome! There isn’t a bad song on either album! Wish they could’ve hashed out their differences and made more music but that’s life I guess!!
As always, a very thorough and insightful look at a band that sold some records (I was in the biz at the time) but in the end was a record co. product, that didn't do much to legitimize them despite decent songs (aside from Smile). Waite was a great singer, and that carried them live, but their end came naturally at the end of that era. That kind of corp rock was resented by rock fans by 1991.
My first.concert was Journey in the early 80s And uve always loved the babys. I still listen to both often. John whaite just played a smaller venue by ne earlier this month. Perry and whaite have great voices.
Fast Story, I was NYPD maybe 1993, Jon Waite lived in Manhattan I would see him often, talk to him a terrific nice guy. One day I asked him when is the next Bad English Album he said "THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN" I said why you guys had cpl of big hits, he smiled said "THANKS, But cpl of those guys are tough to deal with, I said WHAT THE GUYS FROM JOURNEY ARE DICKS" lol he just said , 'You said it not me" I met him a lot, good dude.
"I miss the 'edge' and rock-and-roll". - Jonathan Cain LOL The arrival of Cain signaled the beginning of the end for Journey. With Greg Rolie, Journey had groove and 'edge' and wrote some kickass songs. When he was replaced with Cain, they turned into a ballad-driven vibrator music band, just like when Chicago lost Terry Kath. Let's tell the truth...... Cain killed Journey.
I remember the story for the second album Backlash that Waite would go into the studio and change the levels to his liking then later Schon would go in and do the same. Guess Waite won in the end but he was the last one standing.
I saw Bad English at First Avenue. Great show but John Waite was so skinny and looked so sick. I remember his band mates looking at him like, “you OK, dude?”
Technically, Journey’s original lineup was a supergroup. The original lineup made up of Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie ( Santana) Ross Valory ( Steve Miller Band & Frumious Bandersnach) George Tickner ( Frumious Bandersnach) Prairie Prince ( The Tubes) . Although Prairie Prince was quickly replaced with Ansley Dunbar ( David Bowie and Frank Zappa) and George Tickner left leaving the band with just Schon playing guitar. Other bands like Led Zeppelin also were considered a supergroup. When the members of these kinda groups became wildly successful people tend to forget their former group. Zeppelin is a great example. You hear Jimmy page you think Zeppelin not Yardbirds. Same with Schon you think Journey not Santana, and likely it’s the same for Gregg Rolie too.
It's 'Stephen' not Steven. The Babys ended in December 1980 after John Waite was injured on stage; and the band was in debt. By January 1981, Jonathan Cain was part of Journey.
Saw Bad English open for Whitesnake on April 25, 1990 in St. Louis. Great show. 16 months later I was married and hair metal/hard rock fun was over. Not because of being married but Nirvana ruined it all.
When I See You Smile is probably their best song and I always considered these guys more AOR than Hard Rock so what's the problem. Did they want to sound heavier?
I seen them in concert when I was 17 in a theater and they were good.Neal Shon stood out.loved Forget Me Not and still do but even back then their other songs became cheesey more s as time has gone by.Bad Journey band ,one sappy song after another.
I guess Steve wasn't the problem. Jonathan is the common denominator in the destruction of 2 great bands and I don't care how much that other guy sounds like Steve Perry that ain't journey
Journey is Journey, Steve Perry hasn't been with them for over 25 years now and people such as yourself should really get over it and stop complaining. Steve isn't coming back and Journey moved on without him, yeah I do agree they did him dirty with how they went about it but no one said Neal and Jonathan are smart.
At the 6:43 mark there a clip from the Bad English vid for 'When I See You Smile' and Schon is playing left handed which is extremely odd since he plays right handed. Not sure if anyone else caught that.
@paddyodriscoll8648 why so serious bro? I was born in the 80s. Grew up in the 80s. Of course I know what a mullet is. I had one. Come on man. Did my comment insult you? Well I am sorry man.
John Waite used the song title Every Time I Think of You for the song Missing You, writing it with Chas Sanford and Mark Leonard. 40 years 🎂 since the release of the song. The other spinoff of Journey was The Storm. Journey members Greg Rolie and Ross Valory formed that group. RIP Mark Spiro, 2024. He was co-writer of Forget Me Not and Straight to Your Heart. There was a singer named Jon English. He was from Australia 🇦🇺. He has a son, Junior. He married a singer named Christie Lamb 🐑. They get a kick out of the nane Bad English: that could mean that Christie English is Good English! L 🤣 L On the 2nd album Backlash, Diane Warren, John Waite and Jonathan Cain wrote The Time Alone With You. I like that ballad. Yet, my favorite song from that album is Straight to Your Heart. Bob Rock or the late Bryce Fairbairn would have been better producers for backlash. But, they were busy with other musicians in 1991.
You meant 1995 at the end there, not 1985. I had _Bad English._ There were some strong songs on the album, especially "Forget Me Not" and "Best Of What I Got," but the problem was that this was supposed to be Neal Schon's time to really shine, as the Journey of the mid-80s didn't give him as much opportunity to do so as their earlier stuff did. However, the first album really didn't do that. I mean, Bad English was a decidedly Hard Rock band, and they literally gave him not much opportunity to do the kind of guitar solos that he used to do in Journey going right up through the _Escape_ album. Even the song "Forget Me Not" sets us up for what was promising to be an epic guitar solo, only to be cut-off at about the 20-second mark. Talk about the biggest missed opportunity in the world right there. 🙄🤦🏻♂️ Bad English had great Hard Rock instincts but, unfortunately, never had the courage nor conviction to go all the way with them. That's why they turned-out to be a mediocre band that should have been so much more, considering the talents of everyone involved. At least Neal Schon took Deen Castronovo along with him to FINALLY form Hardline, the Heavy Metal band he always wanted to form, before eventually taking him along to a reformed Journey. Come to think of it, can you please do a show on Hardline? They were like Bon Jovi, only harder and heavier, and had 2 great songs from their 1992 debut album, "Life's A Bitch" and an unexpected Metal cover of the 1983 minor Danny Spanos hit "Hot Cherie," which was yet another example of a cover being better than the original (although I liked the original as well). But yeah, definitely do a show on Hardline. A lot of us would love to see it.
The Baby's were a great band. Bad English could have been a great band. Just like Damn Yankees. But too be honest, I don't think Jonathan and Neal's egos could work with anyone. Both can hardly get their heads in a doorway.
Great video dude. I'm pert near 64 will be in 11 days. I listened to Journey and the Baby's, that one courtesy of my gf, back in the day. I have several Journy albums on all media. 8 track tape, Cassette tape, CD, VHS. I saw the Escape tour which is the one in the live videos you see of Journey back in the day. I tried to record the live concert MTV aired on a Saturday night but somehow like with the old tech the voice and sounds are a bit off. They finally put it out on tape and dvd etc. I recorded lots of those Saturday night concerts as it was pretty much our only way of seeing bands live outside of concerts. I saw countless bands. We never thought about the bands' history or anything as none of that info as available. We only had MTV and rock magazines which never talked about this stuff. I moved on from Journey when they started swapping members out like the bass player. Thanks for the great info and research and presenting the info in the right amount of time. Not too long or too short.
...oh no no no just you Waite☝️just a minute there Loader (Bad English) second album was Fantastic!! Theu punched every artificial Billboard bubble pop soda song that year and SMACKED em' HARD! right in the FACE!
And now Shoen and Cain can’t stand each other in Journey and apparently don’t even speak to each other (at least the lawsuits are settled). I loved both The Baby’s and Bad English and have never understood why critics and bands hate it when they have success and a number 1 hit?🤔
Should of just called it Journey...rebrand it. Keep Waite Valory and Smith and those scarab ships! Hell do Bad English as well...two groups! Seems easier now...
Musicians are children, and they need to be managed. Plain and simple. A good manager makes all the difference. Father figure issues among other things such as being the mediator and final say. Good judgement wins and musicians often don't have it. They probably should have swayed towards more of a blues sound and they would have found more hits. Sorry. managing a dead band.
Personally, I never got the hype about the first Bad English album. Possession, Price of Love, and Don't Walk Away were really good and the rest is fodder to me. The "Backlash" album, however, I really like almost every song.

Midnight Rendezvous too.
The clock was ticking on Bad English before the album even dropped. When I See You Smile delayed that time bomb.
Deen Castronovo is a beast.

Bad English had great Hard Rock instincts but, unfortunately, never had the courage nor conviction to go all the way with them.
Thought I said 1995
Still love 'best of what i got'
The Baby's were a great band. Bad English could have been a great band. Just like Damn Yankees. But too be honest, I don't think Jonathan and Neal's egos could work with anyone. Both can hardly get their heads in a doorway.
I could have sworn night ranger was involved
Journey didn’t really write slick, commercial hits until Cain joined the group. He sucked the grit right out of the band.
So did John Waite ever meet Patty Hearst?
RIP Pete Snifield
I thought bad English made a couple great records for the time- I loved when Neil went on to do Hardline- that record n band was Bad-Ass. :)
they were good - I liked them.
ROLLING STONE MAYGAZINE. SPIN MAYGAZINE.
I miss everything about the 1980's except the hairs and outfits
Should of just called it Journey...rebrand it. Keep Waite Valory and Smith and those scarab ships! Hell do Bad English as well...two groups! Seems easier now...
Great video.
Don’t forget turn around in Tokyo
How could that member of the band announce the band had broken up in 1991 on his website in 1991 when websites didn't exist in 1991 ? Dumb blah blah.
Man for a great guitarist Neal Schon was involved in a lot of crap
Good vid.hanx.
John Waite is the most plastic rock star in existence. Blandorama.
What ever happened to Mr. Loader?
I thought I saw him on reason tv or something a while back
Didn’t know Tom Wait had a career after missing you
Musicians are children, and they need to be managed. Plain and simple. A good manager makes all the difference. Father figure issues among other things such as being the mediator and final say. Good judgement wins and musicians often don't have it. They probably should have swayed towards more of a blues sound and they would have found more hits. Sorry. managing a dead band.
Bad English bad egos, bad songs
Mars Volta, please
🤘🏽
Well....given how shitty their "music" was, it's hardly a loss.
When i saw the name bad english i thought it was a different band😂 i was thinking king of broken English
When i see you smile lol. Every time i heard that song all it made me wanna do is change the channel. Terrible song.
They were super cheesy
Personally, I never got the hype about the first Bad English album. Possession, Price of Love, and Don't Walk Away were really good and the rest is fodder to me. The "Backlash" album, however, I really like almost every song.
That second album never really got proper promotion and the band already imploded by then
They didn’t want to write radio-friendly hits? Mission accomplished. (they didn’t actually write their biggest hit)
06:08 Diane Warren is a national treasure
I was never a John Waite fan. Average voice and cheesy songs.
I remember hearing missing you all the time on radio
@@rnrtruestories his solo stuff was on a lot on MTV back in the day
He was awful.
🤦🏻
