    I still have my tin opener 😁 troop corporal told us on our first exercise that it was the most important thing cos you'll go hungry without it. Still lives on my keyring. Had it 30 years now

      Mine is in the wallet, my mate once tore a great chunk out of his hand on his keyring mounted can opener..... ouch!

      Kept my can opener from when I was 13 years old in the Army Cadets Force GS menu A. Never had chicken curry until then. I was brought up on egg chips and beans

    Even as a dedicated collector, I could never resist opening something called ‘bacon burgers’. Your restraint is admirable.

    My 1978 issued clasp knife opens tins in our house every single day. 😂

    Rolled Oats Loved them! Used to add hot chocolate powder to it. Actually i do the same even now to a porridge pot - plain...lol I'm currently at work drinking coffee out of my 1978 58 Pat mug :-)

    I was in 2LI from 1978 to 1988,we packed our kit similar but didn't carry a flannel but what we were told to do was cut the green army towel in half and pack it in our washing and shaving kit.

      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info, I'll have to try and find a ratty towel to cut up. Was that instead of something like a flannel or instead of carrying a full towel?

      @@RiflemanMoore I carried a green towel halved, used it in the kidney pouches to help pack your rations in, helped to stop the tins etc. rattling around.

      We still used as towel just cut in half and wrapped around the mess tin in our webbing

      Likewise, we were taught to carry an issue towel halved too with our ablutions kit rolled up inside it. I also had a small metal shaving mirror in my kit....found it a right pain shaving in the field with no mirror!

    Still have my old clasp knife, black plastic mug and water bottle, green plastic mug, green and tin opener. I bought BIC razors once from the NAAFI, they ripped my face to shreds. My green army towels belong to the dog now.

    I remember being on standby for Mobilisation called 'Spearpoint'. We had regular kit inspections during the standby period, and I remember all of us getting told off for having the ubiquitous 'bic' disposable razor instead of a standard safety razor. According to the inspecting Officer; the MoD only had stocks of safety razor blades in the stores, and if we were deployed for more than 2 weeks we would need new razors.
    I was lucky because I had been issued with an Army issue Gillette razor(which I still use) so I used this razor in the field, and the 'Bic' razor's in Barracks.
    I too have several can openers from that time.

    Are there hexi blocks in that packet... I remember they would give a very distinctive and unpleasant smell when left somewhere for any length of time.. I even found some in a old box last year and I could still smell them.. We all used to cut down the handles on the tooth brush ... (though I was aged 11 in 1982 and still recovering from the injury I suffered on the princess gate balcony two years earlier ).. every little helps to reduce weight... and no green socks on display ? folded up with smiles showing ! It good to see the day to day stuff that on how people lived and survived while on exercise or on ops, especially in logistically changeling places such as the Falklands, I imagine local purchase was not a viable option.

      @leighrate 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Mitchell Yeah, the old dead fish smell. I was just telling my missus that once you smell it, you never forget it or mistake it for anything else.

    • @paulmitchell9575
      @paulmitchell9575 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leighrate That is a fact, its ironic that the only way to get rid of the smell with 100% certainty is to burn the blocks!!!! Yup, dead fish soaked in cat piss but on those days out in a scientifically designed cold, bleak and wet training area certainly satisfying to watch them burn as your brew slowly warmed up..

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a full pack of hexi in there yest, still in the waxed box so the smell isn't too bad. It's there though.

    Tins like that are the reason why I always have a Swiss Army Knife on me, and have done so for the past 35+ years. The real one (Victorinox), not a knock off.
    Might be a two layer or a SwissChamp or anything in between.

    Food I miss those bacon burgers, rolled oats mixed with the chocolate powder and the apple flakes and of course biscuits brown. I used the same wash holdall right till the end of my service ending in the TA mid 90’s. That talc bottle was also better than the modern day version because it was flat and easy to pack in the webbing.
    Anything white or not green or black like the soap dish had to be covered in sniper/gaffa tape
