- A level grading is back to normal in England. Although for the covid generation of pupils, education has been far from normal. Most missed more than half a year of school during the pandemic and they didn't sit exams for GCSEs.

And yet the Education Secretary has defended the decision to return to pre-pandemic marking standards in England, as this year's results have seen the biggest drop in top grades ever - in stark contrast to Wales and Northern Ireland, which continued to make allowances.

What a terrible way to run things. So unfair on the students.
I understand why they have to get back to the way it was previously, but it surely didn't need to be this sharp of a drop. Considering Unis were still using inflated entry requirements due to the last two years (Manchester Physics was A* A* A), it was obviously going to cause some problems.
Especially considering this year of students were also affected quite severely by Covid - having never taken any formal exams before, and lost a lot of their GCSE education.

Just the way it is. Why not take the strain off boys and stop forcing them to do exams! Males suffer more from stress and depression and forcing exams on boys is cruel. Men are happier doing manual work that doesn't require intelligence like car repair and decorators who paint your house. Stop forcing boys to do exams they are simply not designed to do.
they took the downgrading too far given the fact the majority of students had predicted grades based on the last few years of grade boundaries and then missed grades despite getting good grades in mocks. Should have been done gradually over the course of a couple of years.

Whether up or down, these sorts of shifts just destroy the credibility of the system. It's become a lottery with very numerous and very small prizes at this point.
Imo this year drastically increases credibility, if you look at the stats it is most similar to pre pandemic and no longer have the stupidly high grade inflation of the last few years

I think kids nowadays really need to think hard about whether uni is the right path for them outside of the key professions that require a degree. Increased fees, costs of living meaning higher maintenance loans etc just means more to pay back further down the line. Experience has become far more valuable than paper qualifications nowadays.
very true, my opinion is that this was the case 12 years ago aswell, however, we didnt talk about it back then. Now it is more clear how unnecessary higher education is.
Most sensible Employer's will understand this drop in grades with the background of Covid and accept Candidates who demonstrate suitable skills

This is f***ed I did so well I 2019 and this year most of my grades were a U some of my friends have got largely all u's and these have all been good students in passed years this isn't fight this isn't fair and something meaningful needs to be done!

I agree as well, I did well in olevels and last year I gave my AS bio and got a B but this year in chemistry and maths i literally got U and E whereas the i come out of the exam hall smiling. AND THIS IS SO FREAKING EXPENSIVE they keep raising the registration money each session, they are literally doing busniess with students and kids. I really hope something or someone speaks out against them
Same happened with my son’s friends. Their performance was good but some received U and D.
Ist year they were granted A and A* and second year students been given so much stressed and no help. Also some girls were very low in ability but given good grades than boys. So I am sure boys criteria of grades is different than girls. Same happened in GCSe.
The system is unjustly spoiling children and effecting their mental health.
It’s easy for youth to make money though crime than go to education. It’s so stressful.

This isn’t a ‘drop’ in grades. The grades during covid were a ‘spike’, this is just a return to normality.
Fact 1. Teachers had the option for pupils to sit the exams during covid.
Fact 2. Grades are awarded by distribution, eg. top 10% get A* and so on. There is no set marking criteria from year to year.
Fact 3. Examining bodies can skew the distribution of grades up and down as they need.
Fact 4. The teacher predicted grades that were used during covid could have been down shifted to run in line with previous years. Teachers objected to this.

As a 2023 student I can say that these are not normalities. First of all, I can say personally that through my course of business, economics and maths. I have barely dropped below an A*. And a lot of other students have as well. Secondly, the grade drop shouldn’t have been AS high because of how out of proportion the raise in grades was. These grade boundaries are 15% higher than 2018. That’s pre covid purely. You can’t glaze the government over making a vastly overseen mistake. Grades only increase every 5% every 1-2 years. Returning back to normal with a 15% jump when students like myself have been examined and taught with 2019 boundaries (which the government explicitly told us they would return it to). For context, the A level math specification changed in 2017, meaning further maths students were the only ones that took the 2018 test and set the grade boundaries. This indefinitely skews the data of 2018 grades because further students on average are much smarter at maths. Now imagine saying it’s reasonable to make it 15% HIGHER than that of 2018. Absolute rubbish

Focus has gradually shifted away from academics. Sciences binned. We're majoring on minors and minoring on majors.
I'm 74 now and back then only the brightest pupils got into University - and all on academic degrees. Thanks to that idiot Blair, basically anyone with half a brain could go to University. I've interviewed plenty of these " graduates " and most are , to put in bluntly, as thick as two short planks.

Can anyone from the UK explain ''A levels'' to me and general education route in the UK if possible with all respect ?
You start primary school at age 3 or 4 I think and finish it when you are 11. In primary school you learn like basic maths engkish etc then at the end of primary school do sats which are basic maths, engkish, reading tests etc. Then you go to highschool after primary school when you are 11 and finish when you’re 16. Your sats from primary school determine your sets for the first year of highschool so they can get an indication of your ability. In 3rd year in highschool you choose GCSE options (English language, English literature, combined science and maths being compulsory). Each school has a different choosing system- so for mine I had to do Spanish and religious studies and either history or geography. I could then choose some myself: I chose history > geography and drama! Then in your final year of highschool you sit your GCSES which are graded 1-9: grades 1-3 = failed
4= C-
5 = C+
6 = B
7 = A
8 = A*
9 = A**
These grades translate to points and you can then apple to colleges / sixth forms which have different entry points. So the more competitive the college the higher entry point and thus higher grades you need. If you don’t want to go down an academic route after highschool you can become a hairdresser, builder etc in which grades don’t really matter. Although regardless of what you do, if you fail maths or English language GCSE You have to re sit until u pass.
In college \ sixth form you choose 3 subjects (4 if you’re super smart and crazy!). So I do English literature, sociology and religious studies etc!
These are your a levels and are super intense. You are in college for 2 years (ages 16-18) and being studying for your a levls. In second year you apply to universities if you want to go and different unis / courses have different entry requirements. For example, I want to do law at the uni of Manchester which is A*AA. You then do your a levels the summer you’re 18 and if you get the grades you get to go to your chosen uni! If you get an offer when you apply that is hahah. I hope this helps :)
Bearing in mind each of the four nations has their own system, and there are even more than one system operating in England and schools can do their own thing. There are so many exceptions to the ‘norm’, I wouldn’t bother trying to understand it all.

1. Honestly I don’t even know the difference 😭 I assume one is more academic than the other but I couldn’t even tell you if my college is a college or a sixth form 😂
2. A levels are sat May/June so technically it is before summer but we always get a heatwave during exam season I swear😂 you do finish early though and have a super long 8-10 week summer vacation which is amazing. Resukts day is in august.
3. Typical oxbridge entry is A*AA I think, it depends on what you’re studying. So like the entry for law and medicine would be higher than music. Music for example is AAA at Oxford compared to medicine at Oxford which is A*AA. Loads goes into the application process for Oxford and Cambridge though. You have to do an entry test for your subject (you don’t at the other unis unless law or medicine). So for example my friend is applying for literature and has to do an unseen prose and unseen poetry entry test. The next stage would be an interview and then you’d get an offer if that went well. The test and interview is only for Oxford and Cambridge though. However, I’d you want to do dentistry or medicine at any uni you have to do the UCAT which is like scenario questions and stuff and for top unis (not all) if you want to do law you have to do the LNAT which is the same but legal scenarios. Similar to the LSAT in the us. We have uni rankings though so like obvisouly top is Oxford and Cambridge but other great unis are Durham, Exeter, UCL etc and the higher the ranking the harder it is to get in- higher entry requirements more picky etc. when you apply to uni you do a personal statement which is basically like highlighting why you want to do your subject and you put all your extracurriculars and work experinece. So the higher the ranking, the more stuff they expect on your personal statement.
4. And no in college your just put into random classes, it’s not based on ability. But everyone tends to be on a similar level given that you apply for a college you think you’ll get into. So say for your college you need like 50 points, everyone will have at least got that so you know everyone at the college is pretty smart. In my religious studies class for example there are people who got a grade 7 (A) and some a 9 (A**) and everyone does a different combination of subjects. Someone in my religion class does biology for example, whereas I would never ever do science 😭

This is lies, I went to a small public school with little funding, very few lessons per week. But, I worked hard and self studied further maths and took the advanced extension award in maths, (I studied this all on my own). I got A* A B A and Merit in the advanced award. My girlfriend studied hard snd got A* A* A. It seems to me that in reality most students are lazy, that's all.

No. That’s not what happened. The pandemic students didn’t sit real exams, they were given grades by their teachers. This is proof that teachers over inflate their pupils’ grades.

Dumbed down lol? They are significantly harder than they used to be, due to the massively expanding amount of memory required... They are still worthless pieces of paper, but they always have been. They aren't an amazing indication of academic proficiency, but rather memory.

@@timelapse497 id say theres probably a lot less memory for quite a few subjects. Take economics for example, sure theres some memory but theres so much creative thinking required. The same can be said for maths despite it being a completely different subject (at a level at least)
@@ayhamshaheed7740 It depends massively on the subject. Subjects like maths require less memory and more problem solving/critical thinking. However the sciences are still very much remember all these definitions and how all of this stuff works, and then right it down on the page.
I mean there's hundreds of pages of facts and definitions and concepts you have to memorise for each of the sciences.
But again, it does differ subject to subject

Reverse Flynn effect with regards to a decline in ‘IQ’ may be what you’re trying to refer to, yet it is arguable that academic grades at A-level have less to do with ‘IQ’ but in lieu much more to do with conscientiousness. The primary factor here may have been excessive complacency due to overt/excessive optimism in comparison with previous A-level cohorts which were less likely to be impacted directly by COVID-19.

@paullewin8615 ...depends what you regard as useless degrees ? ( performing arts, history, music, women studies are among the usless degrees out there. Where as ( computer science, international relations, math, engineering, political science among them are very useful especially in these comming decades.

They have been some of the hardest exams in a while this year, and exam boards offered very little in the way of leniency for fairly abnormal circumstances...

This doesn't actually seem to be an issue, the grades are just going back to where they were pre COVID levels. I mean don't get me wrong, I think Tiktok sucks and is a poison to society, but it's better to give that criticism where it's actually due.
