  • @proomster

    I feel that creating HD maps for the entire world is impractical for full self driving. A car should know what to do in any new situation and not rely on precise map data. Great to see some competition in this area though. It sometimes feels that we are watching our generations space race!

    • @Niko-kf7ue
      @Niko-kf7ue 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The car does that. It just helps. A human drives way better in areas he knows very good than in unkown areas. Same with self driving. So make it more safe on the main roads. Driving on some field paths the autonomes ride will be more shaky then. But I think thats ok.

    • @proomster
      @proomster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Niko-kf7ue I agree, I was more referring to the HD maps. Of course having map data will greatly improve self driving cars and should be used. HD maps (where the car knows where objects are within millimetres) is unnecessary IMO. If they have to make these maps for the entire world then I'm doubtful Mercedes will be the first car to be fully self driven on any road!

    • @Niko-kf7ue
      @Niko-kf7ue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@proomster Thats what i was talking about. It is easy to map the main roads with the most traffic in HD in the year 2021. Side roads with less usage can be driven without HD maps maybe because they are easier to drive.
      A human builds a map quickly in his head while driving. But in the areas he knows, he has like HD maps saved in his brain. Andf he drives very safe in this areas. in unkown areas he can drive, but it is a bit more shaky because he needs to learn the area while driving.

    • @bux834
      @bux834 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Creating HD Maps is not that impractical. Look at Googel Street View, but instead of a bunch of cameras you put some LIDAR and Laaser scanners on top of the car.

    Great questions from Thomas. My 2018 E400S with drive pilot, is great for US highway driving, but much less capable than this new version. BUT it works at speeds in excess of 65 mph, which is essential for relaxed long distance driving. The 40 mph limit is nuts. Lidar and high resolution GPS are IMP a smart move and better than Tesla which is still struggling with FSD, but at present Tesla is still better than MB for highway driving.

    • @5starkarma
      @5starkarma 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      FSD is pretty damn good after the 10.11 update. Im really surprised. Tesla doesnt want to be geofenced so the routes each manufacturer are taking are much different. I do agree that Lidar is much better and geofencing is probably a good idea though.

    • @markmayer9290
      @markmayer9290 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@5starkarma Sadly at a safety score of 94 still no FSD; commute on I95 into down town Baltimore constantly remains tough. Still can't believe MB hobbled it at 40 mph. If it becomes manual instead of dropping down to level 2, its appeal is limited.

    • @rahalrodrigo5430
      @rahalrodrigo5430 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can still use the the driver assistance package with level 2 stuff. Level 3 would be nice to have at higher speeds, that's true. But use the level two system until they improve their top speed (which is apperently based on regulations). But yah 40mph and Tetris is disappointing

    'Engage in secondary activities"---that's 100% of the time here in LA while driving. The system worked fantastically! Wish you would have gone 4 more exits and the LA skyline would be visible on the left-or exited at Crenshaw Blvd so we could have seen the rocketman (a homeless artist who builds cool sculptures from road trash) exhibits when you went back towards Santa Monica.

  • @hmi1750

    my audi has the level 2 (I think) with the laidars in then bumpers and city touring pack. Which means it drives itself with lane centering and following the vehicle ahead in traffic up to 60Km/h. and it is can be rather frustrating when it keeps missing the road markings or (due to not being capacitive steering wheel) it not recognising hands on the wheel. So what else needs resolved is the road set up, the sensitivity of system.
    with a level 3 there is a long way to go it seems for a system which can be fully trusted, and monitor and adapt based on the driver's awareness too (eye tracking, feet positioning, seat position data etc...) so as to know if the driver is close enough and able to react with a quick enough time to take over control.
    exciting times.

      LIDAR is superior to any camera system for spatial recognition though. It can be used to create a nearly perfect 3d model of the target area in almost real time, which is very important for accident prevention. It also works in total darkness where no camera can see. It's very expensive equipment though, the module could be worth upwards of $15-20k and only makes sense if you put it in an expensive luxo barge.

    For optimising traffic flow, I find it positive that these systems are being developed. But I must say that 40 mph/ 60 kmh is a really low limit for the current stage of development. Mercedes is already working on this system for years. It has a high potential, but currently its just a more advanced traffic jam assist. Especially if you consider Tesla users being able to activate autopilot on normal highway speeds (100 kmh +) for some time now. Furthermore, the Tesla is able to follow curves at those speeds with no major problems.

    Key incorrect assumption: L3 > L2. Not true. Not by a long shot.
    Sure, by definition, the difference between L2 and L3 amounts to whether or not driver attentiveness is required. L2 and L3 overlap in practice when you take into consideration where they work and what functions they perform.
    Mercedes "L3" autonomy is geofenced, and only functions in slow freeway traffic in clear weather, and doesn't even do lane changes, let alone navigate.
    Tesla "L2" FSD beta is functionally capable of driving with greater reliablility in a superset of these conditions, but doesn't bother to switch off the requirement of the driver to continue to pay attention (hence technically L2). This is perhaps a consequence of Tesla not being geofenced, thus not having a piori knowledge of all possible conditions, such as road work. Nevertheless, the probability of a necessary intervention in either autopilot or FSD beta is essentially nil in the specific conditions where Mercedes "L3" is deployed.
    Tesla Autopilot and FSD beta are not geofenced, so they work everywhere, in rain or snow (though FSD beta switches to autopilot in extreme weather). It's capable of lane changes and freeway entrace/exit. FSD runs on all roads, and navigates stops, turns, traffic circles, etc, while Mercedes doesn't even change lanes.
    Caveats: Autopilot and FSD beta still really do need human attentiveness in construction zones. Since Mervedes is geofenced, this is easily dealt with by selectively turning off in these regions, assuming the have OTA map updates.
    So no, Mercedes didn't beat Tesla to anything.
    BTW, even the most diehard Tesla fanboys are skeptical of Elon's time estimates. FSD is not going to reach level 5 this year. However, they are planning to turn off the nagging feature for beta testers with the best driving habits (yes, FSD monitors driving behavior). This change constitutes L3 in my book since the nag feature is what enforces L2 operation. Note that FSD beta was initially released to select drivers in that manner and now FSD beta has been released to all drivers who purchased FSD. I think this is a brilliant way to gradually upgrade. Should be level 3 for all drivers within about a year, on all roads, including navigation from any origin to any destination.

      @@autogefuehl Makes sense. I don't know how long is will take Tesla to reach level 4/5, but it seems unlikely anyone else will get there first without a virtually infinite data source for training and a strong machine learning infrastructure to go with it. I hope Mercedes and others catch up some day because everything is better with competition, but I don't see that happening any time soon. I'm glad Mercedes got regulatory approval, as this bodes well for Tesla in that regard.

    Lame! Mercedes might have level-3 self-driving, but this video demonstrates almost nothing. The car drove slowly with maybe one or two lane changes in well-behaved traffic, occasionally stopping and starting. Then when the car entered more complicated city roads, the driver immediately took over the steering. Meanwhile I've seen Tesla and Waymo self-driving cars make multiple lane changes and navigate through very tricky driving situations in congested city traffic, avoiding pedestrians and bikers. If Mercedes has achieved level-3 self-driving cars, then I would like to see a much more impressive demonstration.

Granted the drivers are still liable and has to takeover at any given time but can any other Automaker do that at the moment? Liabilty is good but it's very restricted right now and not open to the public. I'd take the responsibility of a Tesla FSD anyday over to mercedes when it comes to "real world near self driving". That's simply what I meant by they're years ahead. Tesla is not just a auto company it's also a AI tech company . They have been collecting petabytes of real world self driving data from their fleet and while it might not be perfect but it's getting better with each beta version.
