When I started with Soviet Filmography, I had a feeling that Tarkovsky movies drain us so badly. But now I must say he is among the least to do such. Soviet Movies are great!
Tarkovsky was just the same director for the cultural elite and for the West. No wonder you like him so much. But for most people in the USSR, he was not understandable and his own. This also needs to be understood. That's what separated the aristocracy under the monarchy and the self-proclaimed elite in the USSR. They were and still are far from ordinary people. That's why university students, academics and others were taken to villages to "dig potatoes." So that they don't fly too high.. from people. Vasily Shukshin is an example of someone who played and created FOR the people and ABOUT the people. And, judging by what they prefer to watch in the West about Russia.. no wonder they can't understand anything about her..) Because they look through the eyes of a thin stratum of society.
Thank you for posting. Throughout the world many people - too many people - know firsthand the horror, the suffering they endured under a political system. Most cultures, most people will persevere with all their strength in the face of such adversity
Wached the movie, reseached russian history 1953 Stalin death ,Beria. This movie is historically accurate. Novel yes, but life in USSR was precarious at this time. Thank you to the channel.
The final scene where Luzga walks past the notice board and a officer glances at him,to maybe watch him as he walks off, then to see luzga recognize a fellow Kulak who he offers a cigarette to, in recognisance of his survival of the Gulags. That summed up the movie for me.Men such as these two were not permitted to be within 101Kms of a city Centre and carried a form of internal passport(wolf Ticket) which declared them to be undesirable . Such a scene could only have been made during Glasnost. In the years after 1953, many such people were to be seen across the soviet Union , returning to where they last knew a type of normality, only to find entry to large towns and cities were denied them.

I watched this film in a movie theater in what now is former USSR shortly after it was released. Back then the truth was coming out and a sense of freedom and coming changes was in the air. Years later I am watching this film again with a bitter feeling, more bitter than back in perestroika times. Russia has sqandered the opportunity for freedom and became an aggressive dictatorship once more. To make matters worse, here in the US political persecution becomes a norm while dimwits on the left are advocating for going soft on crime. If this trajectory continues, the West will fall into darkness and despair - Soviet style.

Russia is freer than the United States, this is a fact, but no one in the West will ever admit it! What is freedom? In words, what's the use of words? In the choice of food? Jobs? Clothes? The whole world is mercantile, and the USSR is not a very pleasant country where the main thing is given to people - intelligence, honor and conscience. In this paradox, the country taught to be the best people, but it also devoured them. In the West, they eat just like that. Russia is the most free country, with social capitalism, I'm not convincing you, why should I convince you, because I don't need supporters. Nothing at all depends on denial or consent. Great movie, honest. I am not one of those who fall into the hysteria of the 60 million people killed by the Soviet regime, I even think that these ridiculous hypertrophies promoted by anti-communist propaganda help to hide the real dramas that destroyed or injured the lives of many Soviets. These dramas were real, excesses of authorities taken by the fear of saboteurs, traitors, agents in the pay of foreigners trying to destroy socialism. In the name of fighting these enemies much injustice was done. I personally know one: Dimitri Belov was a Red Army soldier in the civil war that followed the 1917 revolution. After the war he studied agronomy and went with his wife to work in some rural area of Ukraine. for a trivial reason, he was a handsome guy, and probably aroused the jealousy of some husband (at least that's the story he told) was accused of counterrevolutionary activities, was imprisoned for months, almost shot. luckily his hero history saved him. Very disappointed, he left for Brazil where he raised his family. Dimitri never stopped being a Socialist. It is essential to debate these issues from the past, so that in the future, in the next attempts to build egalitarian societies, we will not repeat them.
