One time I almost felt like half my face got paralyzed because of a punch. It fractured a bone seperating my eye socket and nose, causing any blown air to go into my eye. I was literally able to blow my eye up like a baloon. I had to avoid moves that could create pressure to my eye like nose blowing, sneezing and caughing. It healed on his own in a couple of days but my lips continued to feel numb for months.

No, but I have had people try to deliberately injure me in sparring, as in break my knee. That's why I refuse to allow heel hooks because there are jerkoffs who will hold on to it long after you tap and try to break your knee. Those people, I hurt and I don't feel bad about it.

Yep... About 22-23 years ago I got dropped with a liver shot.. Then my sparring partner came at me with axe kicks while I was on my knees. Another time, about 11 years ago, I was sparring a guy who was jacked(he was taking PEDs). He kept coming at me with serious intent. Swinging for the fences and not holding back. I asked him a few times to tone it down but he just kept coming. I ended up breaking two of his ribs with a side-kick because he just kept coming hard. I almost didn't feel bad about it.

I hung with a group in high school, an interesting mix of all kinds (anime nerds to wrestling and track with a healthy mix in between) and we would frequently bare knuckle body box at bonfires. It was usually a core group who all knew each other and either dabbled or actively trained in martial arts and trusted each other to keep it fun.
Of course having such a wide range of skill levels and such we were always very clear to communicate before hand but friends-of-friends would sometimes want to participate and we tried to be inclusive as much as possible.
You can imagine that situation going south and it certainly did a few times but we were surprisingly chill looking back on it now.
Had several people over the years who brought themselves some pain by beating on the "weaker" people and getting really smug about it. We would usually just touch with a loose fist but kicks weren't out of the question if someone got too rambunctious.
The hardest I've ever had someone try and cripple or injure me, beside a few random "jump out of your car and punch someone riding their bike" types is my brother.
Growing up with a sibling is a different kind of violence. At least we never punched heads, no matter how angry we got. Definitely tried to stomp my knee while I was using the microwave, threatened to stab me in my sleep kinda thing.

There's this younger and skilled guy that I'd sparred with occasionally. At one point during a spar, I avoided his attack. Then people on the side were going "Ooooooh!" By that time I realized that I should have been completely knocked out because I didn't realize he set me up for a follow up. However, he knew what was going on and pulled his kick at the last second. After that I always looked to partner up with him because he showed us he was aware and I could rely on him to keep me safe. I wish all sparring partners were like this.

I had a sparring partner throwing everything with all his power. Even after I said chill out a couple times and I got a nod back. So I just started lighting him up. After I felt terrible, he was stumbling around the ring, had a big swollen orbital bone. I actually stopped training for a couple weeks because I felt terrible. When I went back I apologised and he said “no thank you, I needed that, you taught me a lesson”. It’s like some people really don’t understand how hard they’re going sometimes

Something i drill into my daughter, who is just dabbling with martial arts enough to try and protect herself, is you ALWAYS defend at 100% speed and intention. If your sparring at 10% power or fighting at 100% power, defense is always at 100%.
If you and your sparring partner agree to 20% don't fall into the trap of thinking you only have to defend at 20% too. Your partner should follow the tips above, obviously, but i find thinking of defense at 100 can help avoid some of the power shot people throw during sparring

Big agree with this, I had someone tell me they don't like light sparring bc they feel handicapped defensively if someone lacks control or decides to go hard for an unjustified reason, but I don't understand why you would handicap yourself defensively, if anything I'm more annoyed with my defense being lazy when the strikes are slow, one of the best parts of technical sparring is that you can still develop defense at 100% speed and intention

Fully agree about trying to keep your sparring partners safe. It was just last week that I landed my first knockdown in sparring after about 2 years of training, and it was an accident (I grabbed my partner's head to break their posture while doing a knee to the body and they tried to duck out of it, so they ended up hitting their chin on my leg).

  • @99Steve
    @99Steve 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +32

This is a much bigger problem in boxing sparring than kickboxing and muay thai sparring. Boxing generally doesn't really teach the moral values that you get from martial arts training. It's much more cruelly pragmatic in that way. Not to say every boxer is like that but any means. You even get some fighters like George Foreman and Manny Pacquiao who have shown mercy to their opponents in actual fights when it was clear they couldn't defend themselves. But there's definitely a different attitude when it comes to these sports.

    • @GabrielVargaOfficial
      @GabrielVargaOfficial  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

I'd agree with that. Boxers spar to smash each other.

Boxing is just behind in their times.. It's not even like hard sparring makes you any better.. In fact if you're a beginner you're just going to end up scared

@@GabrielVargaOfficial I boxed as a kid and now as an adult do bjj n Muay Thai. In boxing gyms it was normal to put beginners in the ring and let them really hurt each other and just carry on. I was dropped by body shots very often by much older people. Now that I train bjj, which has a much more respectful culture, I can’t believe that’s how I used to train. Boxing is a cool sport but I hate the culture of most gyms. The training is also often really boring and largley revolves around gruelling fitness workouts that have little carry over to boxing skill. The best way to get better at boxing is to spar. I never had that situation, but I guess is better just to stop, when the other one turns wild, and tell that is just a practices. I think that the posibility of this situations can happen is related with the gym itself. In the mine, the trainer says, to welcome the new ones: "Here, we train, nobody steals and there is no violence".

Great points Gabriel, thanks for another great video. I’d like to add one point from my own personal experience. This happened during the sparring portion of a belt test years ago. I clipped my sparring partner in the nose with a round kick unintentionally .. it was just my big toe that caught him, but it got him pretty good (unfortunately) and his nose blew up and started to bleed immediately. I stopped to get the refs attention, and while I was in the process of doing that he clipped me in the ear with a spin hook kick, hard enough to ring a bell. So my advice on top of what you mentioned is to make sure that you’re in a safe position when you stop to check on the other guy, because adrenaline might be high enough for something to come back your way while you’re pausing.. just a thought. Thanks again.

Yeah I did hard boxing sparring for 10 years with buddies from different martial arts background. We went hard but the one rule was - we don't follow up on big shots. You land something clean, back off, reset. Sometimes a second or third punch are already in the way, especially if not to the head, that's ok. But you don't land something clean then step in to finish the job. It kept us pretty safe, no real injuries ever.

I wasn't injured or really hurt, but before some time ago i sparred with a younger guy, Around 19 years old and weighing 73 kg, just like me (we're both into boxing). He was quite intense and on a few occasions, he felt I was hitting too hard. After such instances, he would retaliate with a few powerful shots, then stop and ask me to lighten up. I don't believe I was hitting any harder than necessary (considering I'm nearly three times his age). But he retaliate first and then asks to lower power. However, one time, things escalated, and he went all out. A left hook (hit the air) was followed by a right straight which ended the confrontation-he went down on one knee. He said some unpleasant things and I haven't seen him since. I apologize for that.
Generally, when I feel someone is hitting too hard, I simply lower my hands and ask them to ease up a bit-no need to go all out, just a gentler approach is all I ask for. In 99% of cases, they understand and adjust accordingly.
If sometimes, depending on my mood, guys hitting hard i go hard to the body - often respect is done afterwards and he goes normal. So i do to. At beginners i am more like a teacher showing him or her how to stand or how to throw correctly. Sometimes tackle them with a job SOFTLY so they know what is happen.
PS: Gabriel your Vids are very very good. I watch them often (near all - if time /interest allow)! :-) You cover very much points on fighting and it is nice - like reading our brains. Its fighting - you one of the best. Warm regards !

That's how you get shot in the gym parking lot. 😂

I think the only hard shots should be to the body unless your sparring with a complete beginner its just win-win for both if you go hard to the body. One gets conditioning and one refines his technique and develops power. I think Bodyshot TKo is the only valid ko you should have in sparring it takes far more skill than just swinging at a fatigued sparring partner to the head to get the knockdown.

I think if you lack the ability to control your emotions while sparring, you probably shouldn't be fighting, because losing control of your emotions in the ring or cage is almost always a disaster. That sparring session looked worse than some fights I've seen, because at least in a fight, the ref would have stepped in to put a stop to those punches to the back of the head when the other fighter started turtling.
If you feel like your sparring partner is trying to hurt you, the correct response is to either tell them to dial it back a bit, or else tell them that you're no longer interested in sparring with them. It should never be to try to hurt them back, because all that's going to do is guarantee that *one* of you gets hurt.

Some coaches are kinda stupid and encourage their fighters to spar like that...I saw it on several occasions. I really don't like it.

I hate it when I see it in competition. A guy goes down and is clearly unconscious and not defending themselves....and the other guy jumps on him and starts hammer fisting the face until the ref stops it.
Why. In a sport where you are already at risk for brain damage....let's just try to ensure the other guy gets hurt.
And there is always the flock of morons "iF yOu DoNt LiKe tHe sPoRt....."
And that's in an actual fight. Sparing? If you do that to someone I think you should be barred from the gym for life

It’s a necessary evil in a real fight, fights have been lost because a fighter showed mercy and the ref didn’t see and the opponent got a second wind. I’m not saying it’s a good thing morally, but it’s a reality of the fight game that you don’t stop until the ref tells you to.

It takes a lot of skill and self control to spare safely, and most people don't have it, even if they're not malicious.

I think some individuals should not be allowed into a gym period, it's interesting how many psychotic and disturbed individuals coaches are happy to turn into fighters, then again maybe they are the better fighters overall, interesting topic

maybe they're not sparring for training. but to actually fight, like they have some personal problem with each other. rather than having street fight, they use the excuse of sparring since it's safer.
    maybe :p

Dog house type spar... they gotta have em once in a while. Thing is in boxing in a doghouse type ring the kind where its tow to tow almost a tire... thats where u learn pressure. But i just go like that to da body.

Nobody should get hit in the back of the head as i saw on a video of a boxer who got permanent brain damage from strikes to back of the head. sadly, the guy is a vegetable now. The instructor should prob have rules- no hitting in back of the head, no throat shots, kick to groin etc... And when a student is visibly stunned or hurt the instructor should probably pull the person out of sparring for the day. Then maybe teach him how to effectively defend himself - cos maybe he doesn't know.
