    Listened to the blues in the 60's before getting into "soul". Great to hear Etta James and Fontella Bass, The Dells. The Chess story is amazing RIP Lenoard - KEEP THE FAITH

    Such a great story, the movie Cadillac Records doesn't do it any justice

      the film Cadillac Records was cinematically horrible. The director also wrote the script and failed at both in my opinion...

    This documentary makes me see the movie "Cadillac Records" in a totally different light..so many unmentioned talents, and the struggles the original artists faced with having their work stolen by other artists during their rise to fame and stardom...

    They should have mentioned that Minnie Riperton got her start at Chess, and was part of the Rotary Connection.

      It was a lot that was left out of the Cadillac Records story that was pivotal in the success of Chess/Checker/Cadet Records... Billy Stewart, Jackie Ross, Little Milton, Gene Chandler, John Klemmer and Fontella Bass also comes to mind.

    I read somewhere that "Recuse Me" by Fontella Bass has Maurice White of Earth, Wind, and Fire on the drums. True?

    • @MrFartboy79
      @MrFartboy79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True...also Louis Satterfield played drums. The amazing, monster guitarist, Pete Cosey played on it, Charles Stepney played vibes and the beautiful, legendary Minnie Riperton sang background vocals. What a session!

    Something overlooked here: Chess had the privilege to distribute the early releases of The Miracles, as did another label called End Records. The Miracles, with group leader, William "Smokey" Robinson, would help to launch a company even greater than Chess, they helped to launch the Tamla label in 1959, which was the flagship label of the world's GREATEST independent record company, MOTOWN!

    I believe that is Jimmy Johnson of the "Famed" Swampers from Muscle Shoals, Alabama playing guitar in the Chess studio at 3:35. But maybe that photo was taken at Muscle Shoals because Etta James did record down there also.

    Really love the Chess Records story, however I wonder why the gospel artists weren't mentioned. The Violinaires, Salem Travelers, Soul Stirrers & others recorded on this label however it was called Checker Records. Being a traditional gospel quartet singer myself it would have been nice for them to be included in this story. Nevertheless its a great documentary

    the biggest problem chest records movie only centered around Blues era .Lenard Heart attack was way to early the producers were narrow minded in Their thinking It was A history Documentary , and They could have taken alot deeper than they Did .

      Because most white blues fans born after 1960 were turned on to the blues by Jimmy Page. He also did a damn good job of cranking blues up a notch! The first Led Zeppelin album may be the best blues album ever, Plagiarism aside, Most great blues albums still have a lot of the same songs over and over. Lighten up dude!
