Of course there's insane editing. All the black coming out of her eyes is one big CG effect (yes I know they have a contraption on her face and that's what producing it but you don't see it in the video .. that means its edited)
The black liquid is all real. She drank liquid with activated black charcoal in it and used that same liquid with attached tubes to her eyes to simulate tears. So all they did was edit out the tubes. She actually had that charcoal liquid in her eyes and everything to represent the pain behind the cause of her tears. In an interview she talked about how it was VERY irritating to her eyes but that's what she wanted so she did it. Billie is amazing ❤️ Thank you for checking her out
I'm 60, and yes! I recently retired and am catching up on all the music I missed due to working so hard. Billie has been on my radar but am really getting into it now.
The metaphor of falling for the toxicity as fast as chugging a glass in it coming back at you tenfold while you just sit in silence and wipe your tears away just to keep pouring out your essence is just immaculate
Her first song was Ocean Eyes that she wrote and performed at 14 I think. But watch her Guitar Songs(TV and the 30th) live from Singapore. Absolutely stunning. Really showcases how amazing of a vocalist she his and the lyrics are incredibly powerful.
I always see the liquid in the video is her taking in the poison of their relationship until it just overflows from her completely. They had tubes near her eyes that pumped the fluid by her eyes, but it did get into her eyes too. She said it was miserable. She and her brother write all their songs, and the lyrics are always amazing. You should check out Listen Before I Go. There's no official video for it, but it's haunting. She and Finneas (her brother) also wrote the theme song for the last Bond film, No Time to Die. Her Live at the Brit Awards is the best version, I think of that song. And yes, Billie is her own genre I think. :D
You should start from the beginning, she was just 13 and her brother Finneas 17, now 21 and 25. They are amazing, you will go through a journey of music, I'm sure you will enjoy. They wrote and produced the EP's and first album in the bedroom at home. Now Finneas has his own studio in his home, they work in x`
When Billie was young she saw and listened to the Norwegian artist AURORA perform Runaway (official video) and she thought: This is what I want to do. Aurora is a self taught singer songwriter that started to write very young (but never had a dream to be an artist, she wrote just for herself). Her writing is so deep and often dark. She sings like an angle. Maybe you should want to check her out?
All Cliff's reactions to Aurora's music are amazing, highly recommend his Aurora playlist ❤️ I'm curious about his reaction to learning about Billie's love for Aurora though 🤩 It probably makes as much sense to him as it does to us 😉
Once you fall in love with Billie, there's no going back! Her voice will haunt you when you least expect it. She and Finneas are like no other artist in this world. Attending her concert last year with my daughter was the highlight of the year.
I love the symbolism in this video as it relates to the lyrics. The relationship is toxic and she ingests it all until it's literally pouring out of her and hurting her from the inside out. She's a genius.
I completely recommend all of her songs cause they really are a masterpieces, but next time maybe you should react to something more idk... catchier, like "you should see me in a crown", "bury a friend" or "all the good girls go to hell". Those are the songs that are on the same album as "when the party's over".
You won’t be disappointed with The 30th. It’s a hard song to hear. But if you’ve been through it you know. She’s very specific with her sound. But the collaboration between Billie and Fineas when it comes to writing these songs is magical! 🎉 looking forward to more!
No, you are actually kinda right. It's the emotionality of her performance that IS the most profound part of any Billie song. (Ring any bells? Ren x Chinchilla, anyone?) You have *that* look that everyone gets after watching this MV for the first time. I can see it! lol. Such a shame you had your eyes closed for the part towards the end when she gets some of the black liquid (representing darkness, toxicity) in her mouth and she spits it out. It's just desperate and you feel it. Anyway, cheers. I think you'd like the music videos to the singles NDA and Xanny. I'd make one or both of those your next venture. Cheers! P.S. Billie suffered from depression for years which gives most of her music a really dark, raw, honest edge. One of her older songs is actually a suicide note "Listen Before I Go". She's playing it live on piano at the age of 17 in this clip. Ugh: th-cam.com/video/Ie2Xv2dD1Bg/w-d-xo.html
Here's some more Billie to whet your lyrical cravings: - I love you @ the Greek Theater - No time to die @ the Brit Awards - Your power, official music video - Xanny, official music video
All are great suggestions; "I love you" at the Greek Theatre is very moving - the young girl who is captivated - what a memory for her, and as always Finneas's harmonizing vocals are super! "idontwannabeyouanymore" is close to being my favorite of all of them; I love Billie crooning like "Halley's Comet" and the acoustic MAHOGANY session of "Copycat" - but I'm biased; I truly believe Billie is a generational talent/artist. I hope she stays true to her authentic self - in some ways, I think she may be searching somewhat for that right now, based on interviews - Conan O'Brien and 6yr. VF. P.S. Xanny is awesome, but so many are!
My Future is one of her songs that is more uplifting than sad, its a really cool song. As far as the ink, she had tubes taped to her face that were removed in post, but that was real liquid pouring down her face. As for other songs, My Strange Addiction, Wish You Were Gay, ilomilo, I love you, Before I Go... Basically the whole When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go album is amazing. Everything I Wanted is another real popular one that is really good. One that is underrated in my opinion is Come Out and Play.
Ocean Eyes is one of her early songs, before she developed her breathy singing style. Everything I Wanted, Xanny, All the Good Girls Go to Hell are all great and emotional. You Should See Me in a Crown is also amazing, but heeeeeavy arachnophobia trigger warning. (I wouldn't normally spoil, but that's kind of important) My Future is a fun lofi change of pace.
Labrinth with Billie Eilish... Never felt so alone. New song, just came out. From euphoria... The TV show. Song will blow your mind. The lyrics, the sounds. It's incredible
She changed the way pop was done, the way Nirvana changed rock. You have to remember she & her brother changed everything. The was written & recored in their childhood home. She was 17 when this came out in 2019. They now, has an Oscar for best song. Her raise was fast. She has always kept her family close throughout. She is just starting.
It’s not cgi, you’re right. There’s actually a video of how they made this music video. Some song recommendations: You Should See me in a Crown (also NOT cgi) Bury a Friend (another great music video) Xanny All the Good Girls Go to Hell No Time to Die (James Bond theme song-live at the Brit Awards) These are just a few. She has a ton of great music though, but I don’t want to overwhelm you with a crazy long list.
The best way to learn her story and how they do her music and see how this video was made (all are her own concepts from start to finish…lyrics and videos) her documentary (on Apple TV or maybe Disney plus I can’t remember) was what finally turned me on to her and gained my full respect as I am older…also her appearance on David letterman’s new show on Netflix I believe….which is easier to find….as a person who is in the business, how they do what they do will blow your mind. Worth it even in your free time.
I've really been following Billie for a while and love her music and videos. After her first couple videos, she took control of directing, creating the videos herself. (There is a video I've seen of the "making of" this video, not sure if it was on the Billie Eilish special on Apple TV or somewhere else.) It was all practical effects.
One of my favourite aspects about this song lyrically is how she lulls the words “lie and say I like it like that like it like that” it’s almost like a tongue twister, but in such a beautifully sounding way, that is also meaningful. In general you get those clever vowel sounds within the word choices they make that also tie in with the range and emotions they’re going for. Like, “dOn’t yOu knOw I’m nO gOOd fOr yOu, I’ve lEArned tO lOse, yOu can’t affOrd tO” as she climbs up the scale, the Os become wider or sharper interspersed with more consonants and alternative vowels in between them. You can literally feel the gradual fade of the depth and darkness of the Os within the structure of the words and it even matches up with the shape of the mouth one needs to make to get a better sound from your vocal chords within that range. And then it just casually also is a genuine lyric that is meaningful and tells a story. Not to mention the dynamics of her voice that also undermine these choices. And I haven’t even started to talk about her visuals in combination with the meaning and her subtly increasing physicality in the performance.
Billie and FINNEAS write some amazing lyrics. Their music videos are also very creative. Billie has directed several of the videos. And someone has probably mentioned this, but Billie's full birth name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell.
If you liked this one, try giving "idontwannabeyouanymore" a chance, her vocal range is gorgeous, it's one of her older songs too. And of course "Ocean Eyes", the one that brought her to light at the age of 15. She's incredible, you can't go wrong with anything she does.
Im 47 and shes my favorite of all time!!! Her and her brother, talent beyond measure. Check out the newest with Billie and Labrinth, Never felt so alone.
Pleaseeeeeeeee do a reaction to her albums. The first one “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” And THEN listen to her album “Happier Than Ever”. I recommend finding out which ones have videos and reacting to the videos after you’ve heard the song for the first time. It makes it so much better!❤
Check out her live acoustic version of All The Good Girls Go To Hell from the Howard Stern show -- it's phenomenal! Also highly recommend Bury a Friend and the acoustic version of Copycat (Mahogany Session)!
Feel free to watch it again within the video to focus on the lyrics if you need to. I would watch that! I also always switch on subtitles for the lyrics, or you could have an additional section at the end when you specifically look up the lyrics and discuss them separately additionally. Her and Finneas’ lyricism is one of the highlights of their music, and for sure worth looking at in addition to the first impressions of the music videos, especially as a lyricist. Highly recommend doing that
Here's the scene from her doc showing how it was made: th-cam.com/video/YxBjRLSD63k/w-d-xo.html It was real, she had tubes in her eyes and the video is one shot. That means she had to do the whole thing like 5 times and every time they had to change clothes and clean her up. It was very exhausting that's why by the end she was a little frustrated with the process but she knew exactly what she wanted and she did it perfectly. the only editing was they erased the tubes from her face and probably some color/contrast work as normal. And the video is so important she uses it since 2019 till this day as back visuals fro this song live.
A good start for Billie would be the song that "made" her, OCEAN EYES. Then I would check out at least a couple from her EP, like BELLYACHE and HOSTAGE. She also did an amazing collab with Khalid, LOVELY. Then her debut album, I LOVE YOU (my favorite song of hers), ILOMILO, BURY A FRIEND, and definitely LISTEN BEFORE I GO. Then from her second album you checked out the title track, but I'd recommend NDA, YOUR POWER, and GETTING OLDER. Also, check out EVERYTHING I WANTED and NO TIME TO DIE (live from the Brit Awards). That's definitely a good start. But I would recommend checking everything out.
You are going to appreciate her art based on your reactions and what you seem to be into. Her visuals are amazing, she directs most of them as well. Her lyrics are deep (memtal health is a big part as well), fun (especially songs from dont smile at me) and thought provoking. I would suggest going through it all from the beginning
I'm really enjoying your Billie reactions. I think you would like her song the 30th. My favorite videos of hers are Bury a friend followed by All the Good Girls go to Hell, because the videos are linked. Really the whole When we all fall asleep album are awesome.
I found Billie when I was reading Elizabeth Hunters book about Tenzin and Ben... Tenzin bringing a very old vampire... such a good read ... very fitting for this song. WOW
"Call me friend but keep me closer" followed by the distorted call me back, I think it's one of the best lines in all her songs. You know when you're finally away from that toxic person and trying to heal and move on with your life, but they keep randomly calling/texting making it impossible to fully move on. She takes that 1 little sip and then it's over-she drinks it all and the cycle starts again. This one's painfully honest.
If you want your mind absolutely blown away, react to Billie at 15 yrs old doing a slow jazz version of Michael Jackson's "Bad." You will get to see how many levels, pitches, and octaves she can sing with. She is incredible!
When I said she had very visually amazing videos, & recommended this song I knew it might throw you for a loop slightly. Shes a hella creative person & can make things that seem very basic hit very deep!! Think the song you referenced at the beginning was Bad guy, which has its own amazing video & won a whole tonne of grammys. Glad youre gonna go down the Billie rabbit hole!! Bury a friend is an amazing song, as is all the good girls go to hell. However visually all the good girls go to hell has a scene that starts from one in bury a friend, so its worth watching them in the right order (Bury, then good girls). Possibly do both at the same time, or following each other at least!
Some great songs/videos for you to get he full range of her talent: - My Future (the animated mv) - Bury a Friend - No Time to Die (the live performance at the BRIT awards) - Your Power - Everything I Wanted - You Should See Me In A Crown (the vertical video mv) - All the Good Girls go to Hell
Please don't take this offensively but when I 1st subscribed to your channel I had unsubscribed because I didn't think I liked it after a little bit but then I heard you do your first Ren reaction and my opinion about you opened up and I realized how much in common we have. ever since then I've been recescribed back to your channel and loving every minute of it. 😊 So sorry for the prejudgment , Glad Ren brought us back together❤
My favorites of Billie is from her first big album that won a bunch of grammys. Probably my favorite is Bury a Friend but Bad Guy is great too. Rolling Stone did a great music dissection of Bad Guy (maybe Bury a Friend too) going into the lyrics, sound effects, music (its on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/kpx2-EMfdbg/w-d-xo.html).
I really like this song, thx for the reaction bro!!! Edit: If you wanna check something out from her, her old song “Ocean eyes” I think it’s called is a great one
Billie received a picture from a fan, of exactly this image...the crying black tears. She was so enthralled with the look, so she decided she needed to do a video based on it. All the 'effects' in the video were practical effects, like has been mentioned. She wrote and produced the video. Drew exact storyboards of how she wanted the whole video to go. Her director basically had no creative input. His job was to make the video happen EXACTLY how Billie wanted it. If you look around, there is a video of how the whole thing was made. As has been said, the ONLY CG effect was deleting the tubes running from under her hair to the corners of her eyes that carried the black liquid for her tears. Billie was amazing on this album. It's so dark, and full of fear, pain, anguish and uncertainty, as well as false bravado and cold anger at negative people. (Bad Guy and You Should See Me In A Crown)... Just a fantastic album.
All of Billie’s lyrics are out of this world. She is so young, and her lyrics defy her years. I suggest some of her early work - Hostage, Idontwannabeyouanymore, Everything I wanted. Also more recently Lost Cause and The 30th
I laughed so hard at, "What is happening right now, what is happening right now?!" I fucking love the heartbreak in her voice as the charcoal is pouring out of her eyes. It's so fucking powerful.
i will ALWAYS respect you for taking long enough at the start to make sure all of your viewers can go throw that like/subscribe. doesn't matter if it's a multi million platinum artist, you ALWAYS do it. that's a damn good man right there.
I'm a 69 yr old admirer of Billie and Finneas's Music - Billie [B.D. 12/18/2001 - 21 as of December 2022] performed this live (at 16) on Jan 30, 2018. FInneas [B.D. 7/30/1997 - 25 until this coming July - Billie's sophomore album "Happier Than Ever" was released on Finneas's B.D.; her debut album "When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go" was released on her Mom's B.D. on March 29, 2019 - the song "Bad Guy" is the beat you recall from the radio] Finneas was the sole songwriter for this song and also the one that began everything for Billie "OCEAN EYES" (age 13, and 14 with the music video); Finneas also was the sole writer for "My Strange Addiction", "6 Feet Under" and "Watch". Except for "Lovely" with Khalid [over 1B viewsj] and "&Burn" with Vince Staples and the song "Bored" for the TV Show "13 Reasons Why" are the only 3 songs they have collaborated on - otherwise everything until now is just Billie and Finneas. I heard Billie live in St. Paul, MN on March 15 2022 - my first concert in over 40 years and Billie was/is amazing. There are many live concerts that I could recommend to you, but I'll recommend "NO TIME TO DIE" - the Grammy and Oscar winning song for the James Bond 25th movie and last one with Daniel Craig - Billie wrote this (with FINNEAS) at 17, the youngest Bond songwriter ever and the youngest Academy Award winner in the 21st century. The live February 18, 2020 is perhaps the favorite [on the BillieEilishVEVO channel] but the live performance at the Oscars Sunday March 27, 2022 is also very good, but the evening of course, was overshadowed by the "Slap" seen round the world. Billie experiences synethesia (like Jimi Hendrix and others) so she sees her music visually immediately and we who follow her know that's how her brain works- but I believe that as wonderful as the videos are they can be distracting from the music. A great example of this is "You should see me in a crown" - I like the video but reactors with arachnophobia (no joke) can hardly take it. And the title is inspired by the U.K's Sherlock HOlmes and Holmes's mortal enemy James Moriarty who says at one point "you should see in a crown" - and nobody I've seen makes the connection between Female Spiders (in some species like the "Black Widow" who cannabalize the males after sex]. The one video which - I believe - truly supplements the lyrics is "HOSTAGE" - if you ever watch it, remember its about toxic obsession - oh, and P.S. Bellyache (15 yr. old Billie) is about teenage psychopath. I wished there was some way to reward for you reading all this if you do!
She and her brother write and produce incredible music but the music videos are all her - just astonishing creative talent. There’s a documentary on Apple TV that shows her planning out this video and after it was filmed she was like, “I’m directing all of my own music videos from now on!” She was 15 at the time. Total clarity of vision. Fantastic teenage attitude lol. She’s more grown up now but I love that she showed that part of her life to us.
It's also worth noting that she writes all her music with her brother, and producer, Finneas. She also directs most of her music videos, especially the latter ones. You noticed the theme of relationships, and she definitely got out of a toxic one right before her 2nd album came out. And as she is so young, currently 21, it's amazing how down to earth and grounded she is. Definitely someone worth her weight in salt.
"Bury a Friend" is the next song themed video trilogy. Find out what happens after that mystery drink and get a free scare in the process! 😍 Follow that up with "All the Good Girls go to Hell", the third in the video triptych. Thanks for the reaction!
Their videos are incredible, but if you’d like to focus on the lyrics she and bro FINNEAS create , try going to her acoustic set on the Howard Stern show. If you’d like to focus on her voice, go way back to her rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” on Like a Version. Un-flipping-believable.
Single camera. One take. No cuts or edits. Creative power. Billie.
Of course there's insane editing. All the black coming out of her eyes is one big CG effect (yes I know they have a contraption on her face and that's what producing it but you don't see it in the video .. that means its edited)
@@mattm7378 Fair enough. They did 'erase' the tubing used for the tears... but they did that on a one shot video.
@@mattm7378 You are wrong, what comes out of the eyes is real. Watch behind the scenes of 'when the party's over'
@@mattm7378 i distinctly remember her insisting it was real. i guess i could be wrong but i remember the behind the scenes bc it did bother her eyes
It’s probably similar to the Mythbusters episode with the UV dye and a dripping nose.

I'm 52 and I think she's the best thing happened to music since at least 3 decades.
I claim the same. I feel the same about Ren.
Idk… I can think of at least two people who would be serious competitors! That would be Angelina Jordan and Ren!
Cat, same here. I'm 51 and am blown away by her talent. She is AMAZING live!

You can watch the behind the scenes video on TH-cam to see how it was made.
Check out her live acoustic version of All The Good Girls Go To Hell from the Howard Stern show -- it's phenomenal! Also highly recommend Bury a Friend and the acoustic version of Copycat (Mahogany Session)!
The crazy part is this whooooole video was her vision. The set, outfit, black liquid everything
Highly recommend doing that
Here's the scene from her doc showing how it was made: th-cam.com/video/YxBjRLSD63k/w-d-xo.html
It was real, she had tubes in her eyes and the video is one shot.
I’ve seen this video so many times and I still get so affected by it. Just the visuals are so gut wrenching and relatable it’s crazy
I love this song xx billie you should see me in a crown xx
I'm really enjoying your Billie reactions. I think you would like her song the 30th. My favorite videos of hers are Bury a friend followed by All the Good Girls go to Hell, because the videos are linked. Really the whole When we all fall asleep album are awesome.
Please do the live British performance of No Time to Die, you’ll appreciate her talent even more
I’d love to see you react to idontwannabeyouanymore!! The hardest hitting song for me. Her new song TV is heavy as well.
Bury a friend song and music video is sooo cool! If u wanna know more about her, watch her documentary its really good
I found Billie when I was reading Elizabeth Hunters book about Tenzin and Ben... Tenzin bringing a very old vampire... such a good read ... very fitting for this song. WOW
BILLIE BOSSANOVA, NEXT
HAILEY'S COMET ,IS FIRE TOO
"Call me friend but keep me closer" followed by the distorted call me back, I think it's one of the best lines in all her songs. You know when you're finally away from that toxic person and trying to heal and move on with your life, but they keep randomly calling/texting making it impossible to fully move on. She takes that 1 little sip and then it's over-she drinks it all and the cycle starts again. This one's painfully honest.
This is such an iconic song/video.
bury a friend is very much both visually and musically a favourite of mine, would love to see your reaction to it!
If you want your mind absolutely blown away, react to Billie at 15 yrs old doing a slow jazz version of Michael Jackson's "Bad." You will get to see how many levels, pitches, and octaves she can sing with. She is incredible!
Love your reaction❤
Some great songs/videos for you to get he full range of her talent:
- My Future (the animated mv)
- Bury a Friend
- No Time to Die (the live performance at the BRIT awards)
- Your Power
- Everything I Wanted
- You Should See Me In A Crown (the vertical video mv)
- All the Good Girls go to Hell
She does her own video stunts too 🤩
Please don't take this offensively but when I 1st subscribed to your channel I had unsubscribed because I didn't think I liked it after a little bit but then I heard you do your first Ren reaction and my opinion about you opened up and I realized how much in common we have. ever since then I've been recescribed back to your channel and loving every minute of it.
The whole happier than ever album is amazing
Everything I Wanted, Male Fantasy, Your Power, Lost Cause… etc
Just a fantastic album.
and her first song she recorded when she had just turned 13! song is ocean eyes!
All of Billie’s lyrics are out of this world. She is so young, and her lyrics defy her years. I suggest some of her early work - Hostage, Idontwannabeyouanymore, Everything I wanted. Also more recently Lost Cause and The 30th
She drank the poison and then cried it out. Fckn briliant.
I laughed so hard at, "What is happening right now, what is happening right now?!" I fucking love the heartbreak in her voice as the charcoal is pouring out of her eyes. It's so fucking powerful.
Please do “Everything I Wanted” 🙏🏼
What If that person's no longer with us 🥺
i will ALWAYS respect you for taking long enough at the start to make sure all of your viewers can go throw that like/subscribe. doesn't matter if it's a multi million platinum artist, you ALWAYS do it. that's a damn good man right there.
I love this song ❤
HIGHLY recommend Billie Eillish "See me in a crown"
So happy
Bury a friend is one you should check out. The video is insane
Xanny, my future, you should see me in a crown, hostage -
You should see me in a crown is another crazy good video and it's real 😳
Bury a friend is a great song! ♥
That was actually coming out of her eyes in this shoot 😮
We love you too buddy! Don't ever quit with the reactions!!
she also good at acting too🎉
Billie & Ren, saviours of our modern era 🙏
You should see me in a crown is awesome
@Cliffbeats You gotta listen to Billie Bossa Nova literally got me to understand why people love her
Oh yes.
"Bury a Friend" is the next song themed video trilogy. Find out what happens after that mystery drink and get a free scare in the process! 😍 Follow that up with "All the Good Girls go to Hell", the third in the video triptych. Thanks for the reaction!
Idontwanttobeyouanymore. All one word! You should see me in a crown...
You should see me in a crown (vertical version only). Welcome to the billie rabbit hole 😂😢😮
