DIY - Making A Leather Watch Cuff / Band

  • My father has this watch for many years now. But the band broke few weeks ago. So he asked me to make him a new leather watch band.
    He wanted something close to a bracer rather than a simple watch band he could buy in any store. That's what I came up with.
    I hope you will like it.

    I had a thick leather watch band back in the 70's as a kid. I thought is was the coolest. Bringing cool back one project at a time.

    Might have been interesting to know a bit more about the different stages, what kind of leathers, what kind of strand, which products you use, why and when, etc... other than that nice music.

    • @RedSmithWorkshop
      @RedSmithWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be happy to answer any question you have

    • @RenoLaringo
      @RenoLaringo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedSmithWorkshop Thank you Red. In fact I have so many questions I think I would better first try to get the basics with a training somewhere before annoying you with that. For ex, I wondered how you chose the leather thickness according to your projects, and also how you chose the strands types, what that red under layer was, what was that white milk looking product you used, etc....
      I think I 'd better have at least a basic understanding of the whole process before I take the next step into it and choose the tools I would use to start with.
      I also wonder if I can start with basic cheap tools or if I better go with some serious stuff right away. I'm a musician myself and I know from experience that buying cheap often led people to stop the hobby. I don't know if it's the same here. Have a nice one buddy ! And thank you very much for your attention and help.

    • @RedSmithWorkshop
      @RedSmithWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chosing the leather is an important part of a project. If the project need to be resistant to any kind of stress a thicker leather is the way to go. But if it's too thick it won't bend very easily. I use coton or polyester waxed thread. 0.8 or 1mm thick for wallets, belt and other project. Same thing as leather, if it need to be strong, it needs to be thick. The red under layer is just suede to have a smoother contact to the skin. The white product is a leather finish. It seals the leather and give it a nice shiny and polish effect.
      I tend to agree with you about the tools or instruments. A lot of people buy cheap tools when they start leatherworking, but they don't get the desired results and quickly give up. I prefer to buy a few good quality tools and buy more when I need them. This way I'm sure I have tool that will last me forever and if something is badly made, it's all on me, and not on my tools ;)
      I hope it helps! Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for watching!

    • @RedSmithWorkshop

    • @RedSmithWorkshop
      @RedSmithWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, to answer quickly, I use vegetable tanned leather. I burnished the edges with a leather finish called Toko Finishi. I used black leather dye then applied natural oil and two coats of leather finish to protect it and make it shiny. That's pretty much it. Thanks for watching and your interest in leatherworking. :)

      MrSquirmyPig Thank you very much. Just by unscrewing the two little screws on top (or bottom) of the watch, you can access to the back of it.

    Beautiful work! thanks for teaching me the technic. Do you think some place like Michaels would have everything I need or do u have any tips or places that might be better for my first time at this?

      Thank you Ricardo ! It depends on where you live. If you are in the US, you can go to Tandy Leather. They have all the supplies you need for leathercrafting. If you're not living in the US, you can order it online on their website :)

    First, the little helper is awesome, how's the knuckle?! lol. Second, I don't mean to be ignorant but what are the two liquids you are using? one you wiped on and one brushed, if you do not mind me asking. Thanks for the inspiration, stellar work!

    • @RedSmithWorkshop
      @RedSmithWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much ! My knuckle is ok, he doesn't hit that hard yet. I don't mind at all, always happy to share and help : the one I rubbed is leather oil. The one I brushed is a leather finish, like a varnish, two coat of each and you're good to go ;) Thanks for watching !

    • @RedSmithWorkshop

      Hey mate! Thank you very much. For the band I used 2.6mm vegetable tanned leather, and for the smaller parts holding the watch, 1.4mm vegetable tanned leather. I hope it helps. And thanks for watching!
