Between the lost ball, the drive going less than 100 yards, and taking so many shots on one hole you lose count, this is the closest Rick Shiels has ever come to playing golf like me
Hey its all about value for money! Why shoot low and play golf with ease when you can explore all corners of the course and shoot big and cost yourself half a dozen balls!
Rick, You forgot to cut them in half. As you say always say "it wouldn't be a ball review, without cutting them in half" especially the the feathered one to see what feathers they used back then. Maybe you can do another review using these balls with the clubs they used back then also. That would make it very interesting
I'm wondering if the ball you lost and the wooden one would actually react better an go farther with a long iron than your modern driver or wood. Those balls being smooth and solid won't compress and bounce off the hollow headed club like a modern ball. Wonder if the hollow head is giving toouch give and reducing the punch it would get into it otherwise. Great video!
It's interesting. But everybody had to master those clubs and balls and style of the game. Sure, they got in with more strokes, but it was fair, much like it is today. Although tech nowadays is arguably making the game slightly unfair. I mean, if you have the BEST ball in the world, and the best clubs, and they're fitted for you and feel perfect, you're going to have a huge advantage versus somebody who doesn't even know what the best clubs are for them. I'm not a clubs guy really. I can play with mostly anything. I like specific clubs, but like Jack Nicklaus said it's only a piece of iron. Hit the ball with it
back in 1500's - they were just trying to get out of the house and away from grouchy wives... so in other words, technology has changed in the past 500 years, motives have not..
Yeah. We should be thankful we have the best golf ball technology that gives us the abilities to maintain distance, spin and better results than those vintage balls back in those days.
Being on the subject of golf balls, I remember the wounded balata Dunlop 65 when I was a kid. Grown up good golfers, using persimmon woods of the day, had a very specific ball flight, somewhat reminiscent of a jet fighter taking off. Low start with lots of speed, and then it rose up at the end of the flight. See if you can recreate that.
Pro golfer hitting a 600+ year old wooden golf, using a 3 wood from 100 yards in with a clubhouse behind the green. I've now seen it all! Cheers Rick for some of the best golf content put there!!
I love how Rick calls out his strategy and plans in every video and so often screws it up. He’s a normal golfer like all of us despite somehow being a” PGA Pro” but I think that’s why we all love him
Ricks so true to the game he won’t even pick up the feather ball to make sure it’s not damaged. Honestly I don’t think anyone would blame him to make sure it wasn’t bursting at the seems haha.
Had the same thought. 100% chance I would pick up that ball to make sure it was okay before hitting it again. I cringe a bit at how much damage was done to these rare antique balls, but I did really want to see them get played and enjoyed the content.
@@sombrenouille9492 agree 100%. It’s it tournament play I totally get it, but if it’s just casual play what’s the crime, long as there isn’t money involved haha.
@@garyco766 hahaha I wouldn’t even think about picking it up either, just like shoot hope it’s going to make it. I was the same, nooo don’t ruin or lose those….but also, yessss let see what happens to them haha. Forgot how much he spent on them but guess they have ‘character’ now haha.
@@garyco766 These are not rare or antique. Obviously he wouldn't thrash a 600 year old ball for giggles. Also Rick said the balls were replicas within the first minute of the video 0:52
Golf balls of yesteryears are hard to hit and dont travel anywhere. Make you wonder how golfers played so well with this balls. Golf technology has come a long way since these old school balls. Loved this video! Keep posting them as I love to watch your videos. Happy adventures and golfing to you Mr. Shiels.
I saw another TH-camr do this - but they did it with the real old clubs. The feathery ball is actually a decent ball hit with a wooden club. As is the guttie from 1895. Modern Drivers are for a trampoline effect and old school wood is to wallop and bounce the ball off the face hence the lack of distance.
Only you Rick would have a go at history in playing with feathered golf balls! Loved the video! I have some old UK old size golf balls from the 60/70s ( smaller circumference) if you would like to play a round of golf with your golf mates using them, maybe dress up with the old golf shoes and glenmuir jumpers etc! I have around 2 dozen or more if you want them? I am sure the video you create with them would go down a treat with your followers Rick!

The top balls were balata covered and you could spin them for fun, the downside being you also chewed the covers with the groves of the irons and they were so soft they quickly got knocked out of shape. I dread to think what todays irons would do to the cover of a balata ball!

Me: .................
You captured ones thoughts completely and expressed them with an eloquence one can only dream of.
HUH ? WHAT IS IT NOW ?

I am reasonably sure that I could tie Rick if he were playing with a 600 year old golf ball.
The funniest thing will be when some random player finds that lost rough ball thinking he found a ball that's been there for 500+ years...LOL

Rick loved the wooden ball so much that he added it to the bag permanently!
it is truly incredible that these golfers could play with groovless wedges, wooden clubs, and wooden golf balls!!!
True, obviously they weren’t driving 400 or anything tho

Now THAT was fun! When hit with the 9 iron, that leather covered feather ball had more hang-time than a fight to Hawaii.

his distance with a wooden ball is like my normal distances lmfao. Also losing track of how many shots I've taken, classic.
