My favourite of all time is 2001 and I totally get what you mean about it being slow. There are many long exterior shots of the Jupiter mission, especially them checking out the faulty part, that I can imagine dragging and really slowing the pace down when watching it at home. BUT, in the cinema on the big screen it’s incredibly captivating and you completely lose yourself in space watching it (or at least I did) and the constant breathing in bowman’s suit becomes very very tense. I was lucky enough to see the “unrestored” 70mm print which was overseen by Nolan to look as close to what people would’ve seen when it was first released as possible and it blew my mind . It’s still showing at the Prince Charles cinema in Leicester Square in this format and if you managed to see it there I would be amazed if it didn’t move up your list! Great video 👍👍
You commented on the slowness/time lengths of several movies in a negative light. Would you say that a movie that is not fast paced does worse in your eyes?
To be honest not particularly some of them can still be intriguing to me and keep my attention and still be slow paced - but I think for some of them here that didn’t happen. 2001 is a little different tho I think I 100% missed something and the slowness is probably the actual movie watching experience (as I watched on my TV) more than the film
just found this and I think this might be one of the best commentary videos on Kubrick idk something about the recording and your voice isn't so annoying or anything . great vid :P !
My personal ranking would be - #1 The Shining #2 2001 #3 Barry Lyndon #4 Eyes Wide Shut #5 A Clockwork Orange #6 Dr. Strangelove #7 Paths of Glory #8 Full Metal Jacket #9 The Killing #10 Spartacus I think the list could potentially change if I rewatch them (we'll see).
Thank you!! Yeah I knew that one would not go down well - I will definitely revisit 2001 again at some point hopefully in a cinema to give me the best experience possible
Don't take this the wrong way, but considering your age, I totally understand why you would rank Kubrick this way. As you get older FMJ goes lower, EWS and 2001 goes higher. My ranking looks much different now than it did at 21. Typically though most list end up having FaD, KK, Lolita and Spartacus in the bottom 4 or 5. The Killing and Paths of Glory flux a lot as they mix with his last 7 movies. Some have them the next bottom 2 which is fair but higher is fine too. Personally I think you can have almost half of his films arguably #1. Of his last 7 films DSL 2001 ACO BL TS FMJ and EWS i think FMJ is objectively his weakest. The first half is amazing, but the second just loses too much momentum. I don't like ranking them much as the movie i'd rank at 6 or so is just about as much a masterpiece as the movie i'd put at 1. So making such a gap feels unfair as something could put my 6th best Kubrick film as their first, and I'd totally get it. My personally ranking is currently... 13 FaD 12 Lolita 11 KK 10 Spartacus 9 TK 8 PoG 7 FMJ 6 DSL 5 ACO 4 TS 3 EWS 2 2001 1 BL
Yeah no I totally get you I think my age does take an influence, but also for 2001 had I seen it in cinemas it would’ve been a different experience I feel. My rankings are a bit also on enjoyment as well like for example for Barry Lyndon I had so much enjoyment out it, it had to be really high for me. But I’m definitely going to revisit 2001 and eyes wide shut and hopefully they can move up the list. I love your ranking!! And yeah Kubrick put out so many good films it was such a hard list to make
I'm not mad at you for the list because they're all Kubrick films, and the majority of them are excellent regardless of their ranking. On the other hand, it is objectively 100% certain that Shining is better than The Killing and some others. Perhaps you are not a fan of horror films, or there is another factor influencing your judgment. 2001 is the best film of all time in my opinion, but I understand that some people rank it 2nd or 3rd in Kubrick's filmography. 6 is not very respectable :d
I totally get you, horrors aren’t my favourite although I can enjoy them and for 2001 it’s fully on my part as I feel my experience for watching it didn’t fully compliment the film - had I watched this in the cinema for example I think it would be a lot higher
@@sweepon You definitely must. My preferred Kubrick's are 2001 and Barry Lyndon for very different reasons - obviously, with Clockwork and EWS as close seconds.
@@raminagrobis6112two great picks. I was so surprised with Barry Lyndon I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did. Eyes Wide Shut is another I feel i need to rewatch again I feel similar to it as 2001 there’s definitely something I missed.
Tbh I might be , I did say I need to revisit eyes wide shut and 2001 especially as I know there’s stuff there that I didn’t grasp - but they all are good films and I just preferred some to others!

That’s a great list!! I’m the same mine will probably change if I watched them all again. I love the Barry Lyndon love!
I like that it didn't take a half hour to go through the list
Thank you!! I thought I’d go for the short and get to the point style for this
Great video....
you better count your days for the 2001 placement tho.

@@sweepon I'd absolutely reccomend that. It's an explosively huge film. To play it on a less grand setup would be quite unfortunate.
The Shining ranked at #10 is absurd.
I definitely would put The Shining and 2001 higher but respectable list

Love the video boss!!
