Lupino Lane's acrobatic moves are amazing. I had to watch them in slow motion as well! A great underrated film talent. Many of his silent film comedies were unavailable due to destroyed negatives in a film vault fire in the 1930s and he became undeservedly forgotten. In the last decade or so, copies have been located and restored. I highly recommend seeing them. Funny and an incredible acrobat!
Lupino Lane has said that Director Ernst Lubitsch allowed him to direct his own scenes in the movie and it shows. Lupino had been directing his own pictures for years. Lubitsch was smart to allow that.
lillian roth had charisma to burn. tragically, her personal demons and alcoholism early destroyed her bright movie career. her memoir, "I'll cry tomorrow" is horrific as she describes her descent into hell over the years. always loved her early movie appearances. the movie version with susan hayworth greatly white-washes the grimness of her years.
Note that all the music, orchestra included, is live, probably on one microphone - prerecording and singing in sync was several years away. The film has a number of cases of remarkable sound mixing, considering the level of equipment available in this, the first year of full-lengh sync sound.
Oh my goodness! I love Lillian. Incredible and wonderful acting slap stick comedy clip with a little bit of everything. I agree with Sven, Susan Hayward didn't sound anything like the sweet voice of Lillian Roth. Susan Hayward did do a remarkable job in capturing Lillian Roth sweet nature and great acting.
(2/5/16) I had never even heard of this movie, "The Love Parade" (let alone of Lupino Lane), and TCM ran it tonight. The acrobatic nature of Lane's dancing made my jaw drop, and I wanted to see this number again. So I thought, "D'ya suppose TH-cam...?" As always, the answer was "yes." Between TH-cam and TCM, what else do we really need? (Note the date, kids: Sound was less than a year old, and, quite likely, the orchestra was on the soundstage with the performers... I cannot believe how good this sounds.)
See, I'll take Lillian Roth and Lupino Lane over any group of four or five performers entertaining today. I read Lillian' autobiography and it holds the same level of horror we have today with all these big shots who abuse women with impunity. You should like for Lupino Lane in a real oddity on YT: a film of a BBC 1930s TV musical as the TV cameras saw it. TV had taken hold in England long before in the US, and of course WWII put a halt on commercial TV. The BBC TV excerpt is that tenacious ear worm, The Lambeth Walk.
Freemans, eh ? So whatever happened to Hardy and Willis ? Personally, I prefer to buy all my Christmas Shopping at the Heart Foundation, in Uxbridge Road, West Ealing ! Whatever you buy there - for one 50th of the normal price - you can take it home in a second hand Harrods carrier bag, and nobody would know the difference !
@Andy Arriaga Only PhillyRich knows for sure, but I'll go out on a limb. He meant that in the scene Lillian was the aggressor, the male reluctant, and the results were awkward and comical.
Wow, Lillian Roth was adorable.

She's only 19 here! I'm in love.

92 years ago! This is fantastic!
This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.
Love the costumes and song so CLEVER 🎉
Always amazed by the pre-code era and how unstuffy it was compared to the next 3 decades.

I believe the movie washed her real life too. From what I've seen on the internet😮
As bad as it was it was good, Lillian's tombstone inscription.
Lupino Lane had some SERIOUS-ASS MOVES!
I love this scene, one of my favorites from the movie.

Yes! So happy somebody uploaded this. It gives me new hope in society.
You know who's like them today? Nobody, that's who.

That was a compliment, I trust?
+tuxguys yes! Absolutely. ☺️
Shouldn't you both be complimenting the person who was kind enough to take the time to upload this?
Lupino Lane was Ida Lupino's uncle.
Excellent I've never seen this before!

My mum was 15 in 1929.
She is irrestible, thank you !
What pros ! What timing ! What acrobatics ! They surely *don't make artistes - or movies - like that any more...and *more* is the pity !
como cheguei aqui? boa pergunta! É impressionante de todo modo.
3:26 Straight up B-Girl stance!
(one of my favourite movies thanks for posting!)

I watched this film on the same day that my grandfather died.
Susan Hayward did not look or sound like LR in I'll Cry Tomorrow.
Susan Hayward was a Beautiful woman who could act circles around Lillian Roth. Lillian Roth was cute! Susan Hayward was glamorous.
Lillian was down to earth; Susan was tough.

is that really Lillian Roth singing?? it sounds exactly like the wonderful Winnie Lightner
That was Lillian indeed - she had a terrific voice and was as cute as could be.

Whatever happened to talent? to humor?
I think I once saw Bill and Hillary Clinton doing this.
