It's so strange that in the original doc, there's a scene where the director was talking to lil' Edie about actresses that can play her and her mother if there were a movie made about them. He suggests Drew's grand aunt, Ethel Barrymore, in the role of big Edie.
tell me why for the first, like 8 seconds, I was 100% sure this was some kind of digitally re-mastered version of the original documentary...Holy moly makeup department deserves all the awards.
Sadly the only reason I know about these women is bc of Jinxx Monsoon portraying Little Edie in Snatch Game on RuPaul’s Drag Race! I’m looking forward to the movie tho 🙈
Sadly the only reason I know about these women is because of the Sandy Passage parody that Bill Hader and Fred Armisen did of them on Documentary Now! While it was absolutely hilarious and I laughed throughout the whole thing, the ending was so disturbing that I just HAD to watch the actual documentary because I thought that’s what actually happened 🙄 I’m an idiot
I don’t found that sad, I think is wonderful that people from new generations like Jinxx Monsoon are able to introduced other people from new generations to this beautiful gems, since the older generations didn’t have the same resources that we do now is up to us.
I don’t know why but I rented this movie from the library when I was 19. I was a strange old soul. Really difficult to explain to friends after making a reference at the time.
They both acted so incredibly in this film. I had never heard of them until I stumbled upon the documentary one time and then when I saw the film I was just amazed at how well they portrayed the characters.
I just watched the original Grey Gardens documentary this morning for the first time, and am now checking out this movie trailer. Drew Barrymore did an absolutely uncanny portrayel of little Edie, wow! Jessica Lange also did a phenomenal job as big Edie, but something about Drew's performance was just SO spot on!❤
This documentary was and is ,the BEST out there..So Raw..So real..SO ENTERTAINING.. I can watch it over and over and NEVER tire of it.. EXTRAORDINARY PIECE OF ART💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
The documentary"Grey Gardens" is a must see as well as "The Beales of Grey gardens" and "That Summer".. Ive watched all 3 docs dozens of times and I hope this movie does them justice.
I love both documentaries and this film. Drew and Jessica added such an emotional touch. I love it all. If I had all the money in the world I’d buy that house.
It’s very interesting reading about who did buy it, look it up! :) I’ve wasted way too much time randomly researching this family’s history & the house’s... being from the South only having visited New York once the NYC ways of life both in the past & present are so foreign yet fascinating to me lol
You would need quite some money. I think it was listed recently for 22 million dollars and it was restored in the 90s when someone purchased it from Little Edie and just a few years ago again. You can find both house tours her on TH-cam.
This was fantastic! I remember watching its debut and buying the DVD when it came out. Too bad this was only a TV movie. Otherwise Drew could have been an Oscar winner
I always loved drew Barrymore as a personality however never thought she was a good actress…until this movie. Drew was absolutely fantastic! Jessica Lange..well…is one of the best actresses of all time….personally my favorite actress in my lifetime.
My mom showed me this years before Jinkx portrayed her on Snatch game. Everyone hates on Big Edie, but if it weren't for Big Edie, Little Edie would have had nowhere to go. By the time Little Edie moved back home she was considered a "used up spinster". Her mother loved and cared for her very much and even tried setting her up with different rich men. But they were both very codependent on each other, and they both struggled with mental illness. But they were all each other had.
Petty Labelle maybe she was a lesbian, or asexual. I don’t know, but I would react like that, not being able to find the “right guy” if I weren’t even into guys (which I’m not, I like girls), or if I was asexual. Also, I understand how mental illness can cause you to be very selective, or not wanting to (like at all), with love or sex. Also, being lesbian without even knowing it. It was like that, for me, foe several years, with my trans identity. Me being a trans man I mean. I have been a guys for all those years, without even realizing it. But then I came out about who I am, in reality, for real.
If I haven’t had words for my sexuality, and/or gender identity, I would’ve probably been an old spinster myself (eventually), like in the past where there weren’t words for it, surgeries or stuff like that. I would’ve become and old spinster who’s just old and lonely, and made to think I’m someone, that I’m not. I mean, yes she could be straight (heterosexual), and cisgendered. But why then turning down all the men that came, if you’re not gay, the gender is right. Like, sometime you’ve got to find someone right. But if that time never comes, maybe you’re not into guys. (At least makes sense, in my head. :$ )
@@Doglover-qc1uo I'm a trans woman so I understand what you're saying. I think it was more that she wanted to be an actress. However she was living in kind of like a group home type of place in New York where other girls who were trying to be actresses lived. She didn't feel the rush to marry because she had aspirations of being famous. However her mother could no longer afford to send her money to support her in New York and she had to move back home. They then became quite codependent on each other.
Petty Labelle oh, I see. But anyhow, if I were around and she made a move, I’ve read in her body language that she’s into me or similar, I wouldn’t have said no. I’m sure she had many female, as well as male admirers ^^ :) Cis, trans, don’t matter. Admirers, plain and simple. She seemed like such a spectacular woman, well, for her time also. (Which was the ‘60s-‘70s =) ), the only one I can come up with, that was so spectacular, peculiar, beautiful in her own way, funny in some ways and also charismatic, that would be Cher, in the ‘70s-‘80s, I feel. Also Michelle Obama, or Oprah Winfrey. Cat woman, in the Batman from the ‘60s =) and a Swedish icon of the late ‘90s to early ‘00s -at least for us kids/tennagers watching-, that was Grynet. Played by the amazing actress Elin Ek. =) I fell in-love with her. Those were the super power women I could come up with. But also Little Edie herself, of course. Edie =)
@@Doglover-qc1uo Yes she sure was a character! Much beloved by our community and way ahead of her time. I'm glad she got her happy ending to a degree after Grey Gardens came out.
I’ve seen the original documentary just last year during quarantine. I had heard it referenced, but didn’t know it’s impact. A school superintendent I used to help clean house and pool for would joke how her and her live-in mother were “a regular Grey Gardens around here”. I’ve also recently watched and rewatched the Documentary Now spoof with amazing performances by Armisen and Hader. I had no idea there was an actual movie made about them or that Drew Barrymore was chosen to play one of the most eccentric documentary characters ever, but by the trailer alone I want to give Drew all the awards and apologize for what I’ve thought of her before. I need to see this movie.
What an amazing discovery of this film after seeing the original Gray Gardens the other night. And all because I went sailing on Sunday with Albert Maysles' son who is friends with a filmmaker friend who was mentored by Albert and friends till he passed.... Small world....

If this movie had been released theatrically, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange would've gone home each with an Academy Award.

With Drew’s issues with her mother, I understand why she chose this. What a beautiful empathy
The best of Drew’s career. She was sensational and never looked more spectacular
Drew Barrymore was phenomenal in this I don't know if she want an award but she should have
She won a Golden Globe and a SAG and was nominated for an Emmy, which Jessica Lange won.
Drew was amazing, great performance.
Jeanne Tripplehorn's cameo as Jackie O was truly phenomenal...the best I've ever seen! Seriously underrated actress.
Unbelievable, I was wondering who it was!
"If you're stuck Edie it's only with yourself!". That was good direct advice from Big Edie.
