    Your comparaison with Christopher Reeves is very insightful, you really hit nail on the head. Thank you for that

    That comment about Cap, wow. Thank you for putting my adoration of his character in words. Evans and RDJ fused with their comic counterparts. They will always be Steve Rodgers and Tony Stark.

    It's ironic that Chris Evans entered the Marvel Universe as The Human Torch and his exit as Captain America could usher in a new Human Torch

    Working together in unity against a seemingly insurmountable threat. That is the best of humanity in general.

    I have felt the same about Chris Evans' Cap. Not since Christopher Reeve donned the red cape have I seen a character that well imagined and fleshed out.

    Just saw it this afternoon, Steve. You could call _Endgame_ "epic" and it is, but that one word wouldn't do credit to the wonderful, nuanced, and frankly brilliant film-making which is this magnum opus. What the Russos did was to take an uncounted number of threads from the previous films, which COULD have become a rat's nest or a rag, and wove it into a Princess Bokhara, a masterwork. _Endgame_ was a jaw-dropper of such quality that I don't anticipate seeing anything even remotely at the premium level it represents again in my lifetime. Overstatement? No, I don't think so.
    I will HAVE to see it again ... and again ... and again.

    • @wrybreadspread
      @wrybreadspread 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You (articulately, might I add) reiterate a topic that some reviewers have touched upon and that more should...that the Russo's have taken the multi plot thread(s) and tied it all up like a bow. Some channels of the Screen Rant category have uploads that tally up the numerous timeline inconsistencies. But the Russos did something far more important. They made a boffin conclusion.
      I remember being slightly disappointed with Return Of The Jedi back in 1983. Why? It didn't seems to capture the scope of the story that a conclusion of an epic should have. The swashbucklers of my youth, with Errol Flynn & co., knew how to pull all the stops out. Endgame hearkened back to that glorious time.
      Certain things swell the heart. Listening to the soundtrack of Lawrence Of Arabia for one. And watching Endgame for another. And you're summed up one of the reasons.

    Really great review, Steve. I took my Uncle to see this movie and he said he hadn't had an experience like this since seeing Star Wars for the first time.

      I saw Endgame with my cousin. I am in my 40s, she is in her 20s. I told her when she has kids, she will tell them about seeing Endgame in theaters the way people older than me talk about seeing the first Star Wars in theaters.

      Albert Martinez Hell, I’m 43 and saw the Original Trilogy on the big screen as a kid (my first moviegoing experience was a Star Wars/Empire double feature in ‘81 and I have vivid memories of waiting in line for Jedi on opening day in ‘83), seen every subsequent film on opening day until “Solo”, and I think this is on the same level, if not bigger than any SW moment - the sheer number of films and the interconnected nature of the MCU trumps *any* other large-scale media universe. The closest I can think of is Trek, whose films aren’t close to the same level but which has a metric ton of high-quality television-based content.

    Imagine if Trek did this: pitch films and series to those who have been following the universe along for all of these years, rather than pitching the series towards the general public.

    I liked when Thanos came back, apologized, and handed out flowers to everyone. Then they all walked onto a serene grassy hill holding hands and began singing, " I'd like to buy the world a Coke...".

    Endgame was a love letter to the fans who've been watching the MCU since 2008 when Iron Man got the ball rolling. If you would have told me that we'd have 11 years of amazing movies back then I wouldn't have believed it but now I couldn't imagine a world that didn't have this adventure for us.
    I agree with you 100% that the ending that they gave to all of the original Avengers was perfect and I while I will miss those characters I wouldn't change a thing.

    I think you hit on a point: you never thought, at any point, that victory was assured for the good guys. Thanos was a credible threat right up to the very end. Despite knowing the tropes and conventions, you were never sure how things were going to end until everything played out. As the movie played out, though, you did realize that Infinity War had to play out as it did..

  • @sensibleGamer
    @sensibleGamer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I feel like Endgame is the way it is BECAUSE they realize they needed to cap off this "phase" to go forward into the next era
    This one is a cap off to a _DECADE_ of films, finishing some major character arcs, and going forward the new movies will be "somewhat" separate from what came before

  • @Hypnotiqgenes

    The mark of good universe building is when you can tell great and interesting stories in that universe without using the main cast. The MCU embodies that philosophy to a T. From the TV shows to the Netflix shows, to the individual movies there are interesting individual stories being told. And since these stories are mostly good to great, when they do intersect, its that much more special.

    Never even thought about the comparison to Christopher Reeves Superman but it is perfect. That was one of the very first films I remember watching as a child and Captain America in the MCU is the closest I think will ever be close to it. I loved Endgame just as much, I can’t think of a more perfect ending than what this was.

  • @MrPLebbie

    Great review , especially the points about Superman. Chris Evans' Captain America is a valuable lesson to WB /DC and how they completely underappreciated the greatest comic book superhero. I hope we can get your thoughts one day on Justice League.

    at 15 ; 30 - "There are some things we can't come back from" I agree, very true, but like the old man said, we can face them together. If we lose, we'll do that together too. Sounds glib? IDK. It is no accident Avengers 3 & 4 exist in the Trump era. Thank you for that stirring video. Will reshare on twitter.

    The finality I can relate to Trek 6, it ends with their signatures flying at the screen. We will see some of them in other films and shows just as we seen Spock, Scotty etc again in some form but not together in that original team played by those same actors.

    I was one of the folks in the theater that were crying. I was ugly crying several times and was actually really happy that I haven't become too cynical to be really moved by a movie like this.
    I have been a huge fanboy for this franchise since day one, so there is quite a bit of ground work that has been laid.

    You touched on my favorite thing about this film. This is a movie we all went into basically knowing how all the stories would end. Yet I was on edge the entire movie thinking maybe we've been wrong this whole time. It's a testament to great writing, directing, and acting that they made a movie that we basically knew the end of suspenseful. I saw it opening night on Thursday and now two days later I'm about to walk in to see it for the second time. And in just as excited as I was the first time.

    The movie felt long to me from time to time, but from no fault of the movie. I had a headache building, and that was the part that felt long - the time before ibuprofen. The movie itself was done excellently. (I even managed to forget the headache occassionally, which is saying something. I'm a wimp who struggles to ignore pain.)

    Why would you watch a review after seeing the movie kinda negates the point

    • @Oxtocoatl13
      @Oxtocoatl13 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of reviews are written more as after-discussion with the intent to dig out themes and really get to the bottom of the movie. Doing that without spoiling the plot is pretty much impossible. I checked one review before watching the movie and it instantly, casually spoiled a scene that would have been much more powerful if it hadn't.

    Excellent review, Steve. Makes you wish the Russo's or writers with their passion had tackled the Disney Star Wars movies, instead of Kathleen Kennedy's hacks.

    • @SteveShives
      @SteveShives  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might make you wish that, but I've found the new Star Wars movies to be excellent for the most part, especially The Last Jedi. In fact, the only one so far that I haven't loved is Solo, and even that wasn't bad, exactly, just kinda there.

    I had the same thought, Steve. When Cap stood up on his own in front of that entire army, I legitimately had thought Thanos was actually going to win, or his defeat was going to come at so great a cost that victory would not be worth it. I absolutely could not see a way out, but the resolution didn't feel like a deus ex machina at all. As you said, it didn't make any sense to think that, but the writers did such a good job that I just couldn't help it.

I'm the same way as far as tearing up goes, I get super emotional when epic stuff is happening on screen. When I saw Return of the King opening I had multiple tear ups. Endgame gave me the same feeling that film did. Just so so well done. A technical masterpiece imo.

    Superman isn’t difficult ‘cause he’s good.
    It’s ‘cause he’s powerful.
    Superman would whup Captain America’s ass with both arms tied behind his back if they ever got into a fight.
