Hi Katharine, I m from Switzerland but I m living in Chester and work in North Wales. I ve got colleagues from Liverpool and Birkenhead. People from Birkenhead have got the same accent but there are called plastic Scouse because there are not the true ones haha!

    • @crung8

I’m from Liverpool and people from Birkenhead and the Wirral do NOT have the same accent. It’s just that the difference is so minute that only native Merseysiders/Scousers can hear it hahaha. I could pick them out no problem, and I often do.

Hi kate! Ma Belle, my Fridays'moonlight, my ears' delight, my woodlands' fairy, my pansie, my violet, my Rose of England, 🌹😊
Wow, I am truly amazed, Katherine. This is brilliant! I wasn't expecting you to go into this field of accents, but then again, should I be surprised? I know you're a musician, and your musical ear must certainly help you in the reproduction and 'imitation' of these accents. It was basically Sabrah in very first instance, herself of Liverpudlian origin and very talented when it comes to accents, who had - I was going to say familiarized me, but that would probably be too strong a word - at least happily introduced and initiated me to the Scouse accent with a few videos in which she also wonderfully presented the characteristics - both force and phonetic - of this accent which I like very much, apart from the fact that it was, as you recalled it, that of the Fab Four!
As far as vocabulary is concerned, I particularly remember some very characteristic words and expressions, of which scran, bevvy and wool/wollyback were indeed part, such as:
    You're boss / Have (get) a cob on / Go to the offie / chocker / clobber / trabs / a jarg /la'; lad; fella / a bird; judy / geggin' in / a meff / It's baltic / I'm devvoed / the ozzy / you know 'warra' mean ... to name but a few ;-)
As a Frenchman, of course, I'm far from familiar with the accent, nor with the countless other ones in the UK, and I think I'd be quickly lost (as is the case with some of the videos I've watched where they speak with a Liverpool accent), as my ear is of course only familiar with, broadly speaking, RP and modern RP that I learnt. But it's always interesting and useful to get even a small idea of them and possibly and hopefully know how to identify them.
I adore your version! It seems to me that you reproduce it perfectly, with those very particular, lilting intonations and inflections that I would have been able to identify immediately had I not known that the lesson was on the subject. I also really appreciated the very interesting cultural context and historical reminder, as well as the lightness, freshness and enthusiasm and, above all, the delightful and so charming touches of humor with which you have treated the subject.
A big, big Bravo, you're sensational and I can only hope that in the future you'll also cover other English accents such as Cockney, Brummy etc. or why not Scottish, Welsh and Irish accents which I also love, and/but of which I have only a very limited knowledge, that would be so great! Please get all my encouragement!
A thousand thanks yous, Merci beaucoup Katherine! 🙏🙏👏👏👏
I wish you the loveliest of weekends, Love 😘🌹❤❤🎸🎹☮💌🕊

I’m an American Anglophile. This is one of my favorite accents!! I hear the Irish in this accent so much that the first I met someone from Liverpool I thought he was from Ireland. I was in love. 😍

I'm a Scouser and I always felt the Welsh influence is stronger than the Irish. I did a few lessons in Welsh language and the teacher said Scousers pick it up much easier than other regions of the UK because we have absorbed some of the features of Welsh due to so many Welsh settling here a long time ago.

Hi there, this accent actually reminds me of a Welsh PE teacher I once met in Madrid and another Welsh guy I once met in London. What reminds me of them is not exactly the sounds and general pronunciation but the speech intonation. Thanks very much for this and all your other videos.

I'm an English-speaking Canadian, but I've long been interested in accents and language, so I enjoyed your explanation of Liverpudlian/Scouse accents. The funny thing is I've been a Beatles fan for close to 60 years, but I've never before tried to dissect the Liverpudlian accent. Britain has such a great diversity of accents and dialects for such a small island. I would love to hear your take on Mancunian or Geordie accents (or Cockney and others). I first learned to understand Mancunian from watching Coronation Street, but in the beginning I had to turn on closed captioning to understand it. I loved hearing Fiona Hill's northern accent during the first Trump impeachment inquiry. I understand she faced persecution for her working class and Geordie accent in the UK, but in America she's only seen as British. There are some regional accents in Canada, especially in the Atlantic provinces, but we don't have the same diversity as the UK or even the U.S. My partner is American, but lives in Canada, and she easily "code switches" between Texan and Canadian whenever she crosses the border.

I just can’t believe your Scouse accent. It was really good. Some of the parts you say sound like the Boston accent, especially when you say ‘cah pahk’. So that is where they got it. And I thought they got from the Irish.
You must be reading my mind again because I do have character in my novel who lives in Liverpool, but she is Scottish. Anyway, it is in the publisher’s hand.
I love the Beatles too. But I also love the Moody Blues and ELP. I love ELP’s rendition of ‘Jerusalem’, it is so much better than the typical English church choir.

Judging visually, you must likely never grew up with these songs unless you listened to an oldies radio station.
If you have a chance, listen to the Moody Blues' 'Days of the Future Past' LP or CD. And if you can, listen to 'The Best of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (ELP)' LP or CD.
That was truly great progressive music by the English in the late 1960s to the 1970s. Oh, what a 'Lucky Man' I was growing up in that era.

    Hello, Katharine!
    How have you been doing?
As I can see, you are just doing great! 🤩
What a lovely video, again! Oh, I should admit that I’ve never actually heard of Liverpool (how embarrassing it sounds!) in the UK, but I absolutely love The Beatles!
I am going to know more about the Liverpool Accent from now on.
The rolling R sound is greatly common here in India, we are quite used to it because we have to roll our tongues to pronounce the R in our languages. And the rest of the sounds are just amazing and interesting! ❤️
Yes, I don’t want to tell you again with the same words that you are amazing as always! 😁 Rather, I must think of some better words for you! 🥰
You have mastered the power of capturing us and taking along with your stories (but this one is more like a lesson today ☺️)!
Whenever it’s Friday I switch up to a happy and jolly mood, just because of your videos! 🥰
Thank you so much, Katharine! ❤️
You inspire me to study, and score good grades although you haven’t talked about it or your content is not related to it. In some way, I am motivated by your speech and I study with 100 percent energy. I would like to thank you in person, also, it has always been my dream to come to the UK, and my sister lives there as well. 😊
Lots of love Katharine, I’m glad to see your lovely and divine countenance today! 😍
See you next Friday, I can’t wait for it! 😅😀
Going to start working out some Mathematics, I love it! 😍👍🏽

Ma'am,I would like to share my experience about the style of pronunciation of the same language but in different regions in completely different ways. Bengali is my mother tongue. I can speak Bengali fluently. I can understand the language well although Bengali uses idioms in abundance. Same word carries different meanings/notations as per tone and body language.
Let us come to the incident. Once I went to Silchar,a Bengali dominated town in the state of Assam,India. In the reception of the hotel ,a group of hotel staff were talking to one another in an obscure language. In India approximately 200 languages and dialects are spoken. Almost all of them are of Sanskrit origin. If anyone lends his/her ear ,he/she can guess the subject of their discussion. Naturally I tried to understand what they were saying. I failed. I couldn't help but ask them to name the language they were speaking. To my surprise they replied," They were speaking in Bengali"
I am happy to learn that in UK same thing is going on. Thank you ma'am, regards

Welsh speakers roll the R sound. It's the Welsh letter RH.As in Rhyl, Rhuddlan, Rhuthun. The K sound is the Welsh CH, as in Llanerch, ( glade) or Bach( small)..
Remember Welsh immigrants to Liverpool apoke North Wales Welsh ( Cymraeg).
Scouse has a mix of Nirth Wales Welsh and Irish phonology. The Welsh bit though is only obvious if your familiar with accents in North Wales and Cymraeg spoken in North Wales.
    Good video though.

    Scouser here.
Best example to use for "k" is chicken or coke. Lost count of how many times non-Scousers who like the accent have asked me to say "chicken and a can of coke" 😂
You slip out of the accent in a few places, but decent attempt.
To do it properly you need more of the slang. Scousers use a LOT of slang.

Hi Katherine, very interesting and amazing , I'm italian and I noticed that when you pronounce "scran"or "granny' the sound of "r" is exactly the same in italian!!

It's interesting that British English has various accents. Japanese language has them as well. thanks for a fun video!

Scouse is a dialect with unique vocabulary - it is more than just accent (how words are pronounced).
    I grew up in Liverpool.

I'm from the deep south in the US, but i live in England. Most people here say i have a very unique accent. I'm going to Liverpool this weekend to do street photography and photograph the locals. I think there's going to be a unique clash of accents lol. I can't wait..

Accents are always interesting. I love them both in English and in my native language as well. Would you by any chance do a video about the Newcastle georgie accent. Being a Scandinavian, it's so interesting because the georgie accent has so many words with Norwegian, Swedish and Danish origin.

Accents across Britain vary so wildly within such short distances it’s crazy. I’m guessing this must occur in other countries but even as a Londoner I can tell which side of town people are from and especially their social class. You can generally pretty much locate someone’s upbringing within about 50 miles. Though I would fare less with Welsh accents and Scot’s accents. Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen are pretty distinctive though even if an Aberdeen accent is barely recognisable as English to my ears. An ex’s father was from there and did not have a clue what he was saying most of the time.

      @englishwithkatharine  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Your comment is wonderful but try to refrain from mentioning social class. It pigeon holes people and isn’t really necessary or relevant anymore. 😊

It is a very beautiful accent! It reminds me of England learners here in my area of my country, they pronounce English in a way that is very close to "a Liverpudlian accent" of course not all the words mentioned but some of them. I really enjoyed watching and listening to this video and thank you so much for this amazing presentation!

Hello, dear Katharine, I watched you video some days ago, but I couldn’t write down, my gratitude to you..thank you very much. Although I have a kind of question-suggesting, would be very interesting if you follow one pattern, and numbered episodes, for example today’s video, about accents and words from a particular area. The first of these year, so far in my humble opinion, is the best!, but afterwards very interesting the other ones, but not connected between them, could be very helpful too, for the learners and for the people like me who has interests of knowing your opinion and the reflection of your background include in you explanation. Finally really really, thank you. Greetings from a Mexican person living in Japan, and soon in a short trip to Mexico. After 6 years, and before that 17 years! Incredible! A foreigner in my own birth place….! Gracias por todo señorita. ‘Ta..ta.taa..arigato…
