    Great Mr. Sanabria! You're really awesome! Baião is a very hard rhythm to play. I'm Brazilian e I Loved you playing with your 'American accent'. It was perfect! Many thanks to explaining The Baião to the people of the Jazz Academy.

    I'm new to Latin drumming, and your lessons are the best I have found. I appreciate the history, philosophy, and then the breakdown. Like with some many things in music, when broken down, things are simpler than they seem (simple does not necessarily mean easy :) Thanks so much.

    Beautiful and heartful presentation, Bobby! Just as a reference, regarding contemporary drummers in Brazil (besides Airto) who have helped shaping these rhythms on the drumset as we know it nowadays: Nenê (great book "Ritmos do Brasil para Bateria"), Zé Eduardo Nazário, Márcio Bahia, Robertinho Silva and Paulo Braga. All of them have contributed to some of our luminaries' music such as Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento and Elis Regina (do check any of their recordings). Big hug and keep up the good work!

      You have named some of my favorite Brazilian drummers. I must include Chico Medori, Tutty Moreno, Pascoal Meirelles, and as the guy above me mentioned, Dom Um Romão.

      The drummer I probably have the most afinidade with is Robertinho Silva. I've tried to emulate him probably more than other Brazilian drummers. But as far as the baião rhythm, my favorite rendering is probably done by Nenê on the records he's played on with Hermeto Pascoal. It's that playing of the tresillo (don't know how to say in English or any other language) with both the kick and the hi-hat foot simultaneously. Tutty Moreno also plays similarly. Very free and jazz-oriented. Leaves the rhythm open for comping and improvisation.

    What a great video! I wrote a song with Russ Ferrante, and recorded it for an album of mine, that had a baion groove Michael Shapiro played. I had the thought this morning that I'd like to know more about that rhythm, and found this page. Thank you!

    I could be wrong, but isn't baiao just the first 2 notes of the tresillo rhythm. My understanding is that if the last note is added it's called xaxado in Brazillian culture.

    • @luciolopes6138
      @luciolopes6138 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. But belong to Baião rhythms. Baião and subgeneros.

    • @IvanStepaniuk
      @IvanStepaniuk ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of even the most traditional baião zabumba will contain the third (muffled) note as a variation though the song. Search in TH-cam for "Forró percussion lesson" by Michael de Miranda, you'll see how Xaxado sounds actually quite different on the Zabumba, especially because of the bacalhao pattern.

    There are literally dozens of instruments that were invented in America, including the electric guitar. Multitrack recording and all guitar effects such as delays, chorus, reverbs, etc.

    • @karijohartmann2649
      @karijohartmann2649 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, the chorus was a type of oscillating delay first used by the Beatles, as well as early phasing, all based in the tape delay realm... the ADT or auto double tracking was invented for John Lennon to save time. The difference between a simple delay was a joystick in which an engineer "a wobulator" to manually change the length of delay in deference to the vocals so the delayed voice would differ in pitch and time from the original, but more random as provided by a human to make it that way.

    Hey, great video. I'm trying this on my drum kit very soon.
    Just wondering, i hope this request doesn't sound weird. Could you guys talk and give examples about the drums in the soundtrack for the video game "Cuphead"?

    • @schtickkicker
      @schtickkicker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, not sure if this is helpful, but I remember reading the blurb for an episode of a podcast called 'The Sound Architect' featuring Kris Maddigan talking about the music he composed for Cuphead. Now, that podcast doesn't typically pick apart all elements of a piece of work, but I know Maddigan was/is primarily a drummer (as in, doesn't necessarily consider himself a composer), so it could yield some drum-focused discussion? Maybe not, but it's out there if you feel it's worth exploring.

      Resembles but Little by Little is straighter 8th rock rather than the syncopation of Baiao:. "Little by Little" kick repeats "1 and" and "3 and" as in rock. In Baiao it's more syncopated: 1, the "ah of 1", and then the "and of 2". The snare on "Little by Little" is straight rock on backbeats 2&4. In Baiao as in most Brasil rhythms, it's going to be more syncopated again -- the various rim clicks that Mr. Sanabria demonstrated. Hope that helps differentiate.
