Propagate Lilac Shoots or Suckers - Easiest Way to Start Lilacs!

  • The easiest way to start lilacs is by digging up suckers and this video goes with my blog post How to Propagate Lilacs from Suckers.
    Update: • Lilac Update - Side Ga...
    Using this easy method you will get more sweet-smelling lilacs in your garden that bloom sooner than lilacs you may start by cuttings. You’re going to love this one!
    Spring is a great time to do this as the soil is moist and easy to dig and the suckers are really growing. It is also still cool enough that the freshly replanted suckers can establish easily with little stress.
    And the lilacs that may already be blooming won't be harmed or lose any blooms. Win, win!

    You're so inspirational! I will be transplanting a shoot off a gigantic, sprawling 120+-year-old "Mother" lilac bush from my great-grandmother's farm that just sold. Having never done anything like this before, you make it look so do-able. ... Also, I never knew I could pot a lilac bush! ... And Brilliant tip to spray paint those black growing pots. Thank you so very much! Am looking forward to exploring your other videos! 😀

    Thank you for this. I've been afraid to keep lilacs in pots because I didn't think they would do well. I have 2 very special lilacs trees from my mom who passed a couple of years ago. We are renting a house right now so I don't want to plant them and leave them here. This gives me hope that I can keep them in pots until we land in a forever home.

    Wow, I did not even think to do Lilacs in a pot. I have 4 lilacs because I love the smell and have bouquets in very room during bloom time. 2 are 30 years old of the old fashioned variety and 2 of the newer reblooming. I have never had a problem with suckers but I do mow around mine as they are not in a garden but in my large yard with nothing around them, spread apart so a mower fits. I will try one in a large pot so thanks for the new way to try a new method.

I look forward to spring even more because of the lilacs’ the blanket of color but even more so the air in the entire city is sweet with their aroma. Just divine! Loved the video! I have a nightmare on my hands. A couple years ago, I thought I propagated my Grandma's lilac bush, but turns out I've been babying Bittersweet Nightshade! UGHHHHH. Now I've got to destroy it and start over. I think I'll start by spraying and getting rid of the nightshade, then in the spring, I'll follow your steps and get the lilac just in a pot, wait another year and then plant it where I wanted it in the first place. I hope I can get rid of the nightshade. I'm so embarrassed. It must've been growing under the lilac bush, and those were the shoots I dug up.

    Interesting to hear about the potential spreading of suckers and having to pull them up etc. because after 7 years of living here, the 1 lilac I have, which was here before me has never really spread. Lilac is probably my favorite natural floral fragrance and I just love it and came searching to see if some how it could be propagated. That'll you for sharing, I'm going to go look and see if I see any suckers....side note, my rose of sharon sends to spread seedlings all over and they start to grow in places is rather not have them and have had to pull some, I wish my lilac was like that. 😁

      There are Lilacs that have been grafted onto root stock that won't sucker, so take a look at the base of your Lilac and check if it is one that has been grafted. You will find a definite area along the trunk that is different if it has.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL, it took me a few moments to figure out what FPF was! There are over 400 cultivars of lilacs so I don't know which new variety you mean exactly but some lilacs, like the korean lilac varieties don't seem to sucker as much and I am not sure about the old, yet popular Josee reblooming lilac. I would love to get one of those. These are all very old lilacs and tend to sucker a lot but mowing down or clearing out the suckers is a simple spring chore while the ground is still soft. How many suckers they produce varies widely.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only the cuttings really need the rooting hormone to help it grow roots, Lilac suckers usually have roots already if you took it correctly. I just dug a sucker up from a friends lilac and did not get roots but I stuck it in a pot anyways and so far it is still alive. We shall see if it develops roots. I did not use any hormone on it.

      I would just plant it up and pamper it. Keep the soil moist but not wet and in the shade. I just dug some up this Spring and had the same issue and so far they are still doing great. I should root. They root very readily and you don't want to interfere with the little tiny root it already has.

      Yes, you can dig them up to create more Lilacs. Different varieties have different grow rates so it depends upon that and the conditions you give it. But usually it takes a good 3 years for it to become a good size and bloom. Maybe more.

      I have a friend who has korean lilacs (MIss Kim is a Korean LIlac) and she has no issues with sending out runners. Mine are the common lilac that do but they stay close to the plant and I just cut them out unless I want them to fill in before cutting out old wood. If in doubt, plant it in a large container. I have a lilac in an area I did not want runners and I planted it in a half wine barrel and it is doing beautifully.

      I have some I planted within a month and others I planted a year later and I have some still in containers that I have yet to find a spot for. It doesn't really matter much. Some I just directly plant in the ground right away and keep an eye on them especially if it goes from cool weather to hot weather quickly. (which is typical here in the mountains)

      Yes, that is transplant shock. Keep them watered and if it is over 70 degrees provide them some shade if possible. This will help them to get through the shock better.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am in Zone 8a. Look at the description tag on the plant you wish to plant in a pot, then deduct 2 zones. So if you are zone 7 then see if the plant is hardy to Zone 5 then you know it can survive in a container. Also, you need to consider where your plant is located on the property. Being closer to a building or in a sheltered spot can also affect its ability to survive.

    I live in Colorado at 7200 feet, so winters can get pretty cold sometimes. Lilacs seem to do very well up here for the most part. I love the idea of lilacs in pots, but would I need to overwinter the potted lilacs indoors?

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lilacs can endure temps down to -40 degrees. Just be sure they are free draining, what would kill them is not the cold but having them sitting in water that froze. If you are still worried put them in a unheated garage. Bringing them into the house would wake them up before they are ready.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most lilacs are hardy down to -40F degrees as long as they have well draining soil. I don't know about whether they need to be planted deeper for that reason or if they will need to be trimmed as I have not had to deal with the deep cold. Our lows in the winter usually don't go below 10 degrees Fahrenheit and that is an extreme, we are usually in the 20's and 30's for lows.

      Suckering is how lilacs spread. The suckers will flower eventually, once they are old enough. I live in a neighborhood that has 40+ year old lilacs and the suckers do bloom, the older part dies back and the suckers become the main plant. If a lilac is not blooming there are many reasons for why. I have a blog post on that subject here: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/my-lilac-is-not-blooming/
