Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr are owed nearly 900M over the next 10-11 years including this year. This year they have a combined .660 OPS. Boegaerts is out for 2+ months with a broken shoulder and has a recurring wrist injury that can't be fixed with surgery. Machado is nearly 32 coming off TJ hitting terribly. Tatis who is their young superstar player has under a .775 OPS since his 2 surgeries/PED suspension. Musgrove is also going to be a terrible contract and is owed 20M a year through 2027.
This combined with he fact they lost their TV deal, their owner who has been running the Padres at a deficit to try and win now died, and they are in the MLB debt program making them reduce their spending even further is in action.
This team is straight up screwed in the long term. The Bogaerts deal and Machado deal are going to all time bad and both on the same team.

The reason teams give these long contracts is luxury tax manipulation. They aren't expecting him to be good into his 40s, they just dont want to pay like 40 million a year for a couple years, cause they will hit the tax threshold. This way the money is "deferred". The Padres obviously messed up, badly, but they’ve made a couple of moves I really like.
First of all I’m a big believer in OBP over batting average because if you have 2 outs, men on 2nd and 3rd, what do you want? A guy who draws a ton of walks (Soto) and has an unbelievable OBP (Soto and Judge) isn’t going to provide the same value as a 2 time reigning batting champion because his single likely drives 2 home.
Also if Dylan Cease can be somewhere in between the guy who was getting Cy Young votes and the guy who had an ERA in the 5’s the Padres GM AJ Preller will do backflips.
Are Arraez and Cease as good as Soto and Snell. Honestly I think we don’t know what will happen to Snell because he held out due to Boras. He may never get over those injuries. I’ll take him over Snell.
Arraez will likely hit 40-50 points higher than Soto, his OBP will be 50-60 points lower. Arraez should get over 200 hits if healthy while Soto just blast 40+ HRs because of the short porch in right.
It’s really intriguing stuff. Honesty I’d move Arraez to 2 or 3 moving up someone who thrive in terms of just drawing walks, letting the likes of Arraez, Bogaerts, Machado etc driving him in.
I think Bob Melvin is a very good manager too.

Then Bogaerts had a couple good seasons and the media changed their minds when the narrative became that John Henry is cheap. Either way the fans would have complained- either the Sox are cheap for letting players go, or the players are bums for not living up to the contract the fans demanded the owners sign.

Spot on analysis of the Padres’ debacle with Xander. All things considered they’re better off with Xander sidelined in that he was in the midst of an exceptionally unproductive season. His hitting woes probably had much to do with his reassignment to 2nd base. Kim, the other part of the position swap, is having his own struggles at the plate. The Padres seem committed to trading their farm system for veteran talent. Recent trades for Cease and Arraez do seem to have merit. However, in the long run, they have to hope that they can develop younger talent such as Jackson Merrill in order to balance out the whoppingly large contracts of Tatis, Machado and Bogaerts, none of whom have been particularly productive this season.

This past offseason I heard a ton of criticism towards the Red Sox front office for really screwing up and “losing” Bogaerts, or as worded here: really botching the Bogaerts deal. While Boston did have a terrible offseason I have to think that they didn’t make any mistakes with Bogaerts. This is a guy they had on their 2013 championship team for his breakout year and then they kept for the next decade, winning a second championship in 2018. That decade was while he was on the right side of age 30 and unquestionably the prime of his career. Now if someone else wants to give him 11 years at $285 (including $5 million signing bonus) to pay him for what he did while wearing a Red Sox uniform then let them. Boston certainly didn’t botch anything on this one, they dodged a bullet. They lost out on Mookie and hit the jackpot by extending Devers.

AJ has decided to be the opposite of every so called smart GM by trading away overvalued prospects for good MLB players like Snell, Cease, Darvish, Musgrove, and Arraez. The contracts to Xander and 2nd extension to Machado prolyl won't age well 5 years from now. But unlike other teams in SD market size, the Padres have a lineup of Machado, Xander, Tatis Jr, Cronenworth, HSK and veteran SP like Darvish, Cease, and Musgrove. Than you sprinkle in young guys like Merrill, Campusano, and KIng. The idea of MLB is to win games, right? Not maximize profit.

Not just the MLB, all sports. Look how quickly teams in the NBA and NFL go from top seed to missing the playoffs from one year to the next. All it takes is one injury, one bad play, and that can derail the entire season. At least baseball has a long regular season which can lessen the impact of a single bad play or injury.

I would say to present your evidence earlier, because I nearly wrote this video off as cope until the very end. The video was nearly all intro. Need to make the point sooner.
After some thought, this does come off a cope, indeed. I understand the pain of seeing Xander go, but I've seen enough of him to not jump the gun and write him off so soon. He's better than that. He can figure things out. We haven't seen enough to determine if it's a bad contract, how bad it is, let alone if it's the worse contract in history. Honestly, I'd say the Story contract has been worse. At least Xander plays.

Even before the injury, this is still one of the worst MLB contracts ever. And when the padres fail to make the playoffs this year, Preller must be fired.
This is going to be another Bobby Bonilla contract situation. The padres are going to be paying the contract well after he retires.
This contract is going to be impossible to upland Xander. There is no team that will take on this contract, not even if the padres give a ton of cash.
Xander can’t hit. He is staring at his mid 30s. Is now very prone. And you put all that with the 25+ million a year, it just spells one of the worst contracts in MLB history.

No contract better demonstrates the problem with Padres GM Preller than Bogarts. Padres had no need of another high priced SS at the time, but AJ doesn’t care. He’s both two things at the same time:
    1. A tremendous evaluator of individual baseball talent. 2. About as bad at team building, and the use of limited resources to build a team, as any GM in the league.
Padres would be better served, and his talents better used, in a role where his expertise is utilized in scouting and trades (identifying prospects) rather than buying players he likes.

Bogey was hitting missles this last week. Everything 100MPH right at people. Expected to see a run. I believe they said a hairline fracture with no structural damage. So not a lasting injury. He'll come back this year and be fine. The next few years he'll hit .285 to .300 with 15 to 20 HR and 30 2B and play good defense. Still overpaid, but not WORST contract in baseball.
