When I hear good biblical exegesis, really good exegesis, I'm awe struck by the sheer beauty of how it all goes together, my soul is elevated and I feel myself even more in love with God and in awe of the Bible for such stunning beauty. It's like a saw a sunset in Costa Rica or discovered a new law of nature. Thank you! And God bless your amazing ministry!

He is so wrong about their views of sex, it's ridiculous. Nobody in the Jewish culture is or was fine with people going around have having sex to make someone their wife. It was improper and wrong. Having sex during an engagement period was wrong too, even if it happened sometimes. All of this is irrelevant for Jesus was Joseph wasn't his father and people knew that. The entire video is kind of pointless.

As a protestant thank you so much for this teaching. The fact that Jesus was not socially a bastard because He was allowed into the temple is huge. It further shows that God did not want to allow any hint of doubt to the Rabbi scholars of Jesus' divinity.

    • @tinalettieri

The proper Jewish legal definition of a bastard is this and only this; that the child be born to a woman married to a man who is not the father. The child of a single woman who fornicates even with a married man is not a bastard.

And what makes Catholic Answers apologists the best is CHARITY. It comes across each and every time you guys engage people to defend the faith. You NEVER insult someone, put someone down, accuse someone, beat them up for misunderstanding, dismiss people as "people like you", or get angry with a person who merely doesn't understand clearly and has an opinion. Matthew 1:22-23 makes reference to Isaiah 7:14 Newer versions of the bible have the same quote (whether Catholic or Protestant) but my Challenor Rheims bible from over 55 years ago based on the Douray Rheims says ..." and a virgin shall be with child (????)...." This version says it all as in newer versions it says "a virgin shall conceive and bear a son", which is acceptable of any new married woman in a conjugal relationship with her husband. A woman/virgin can conceive in a relationship and then bear a child, but then she is no longer a virgin...a virgin cannot be "with child" as she is still a virgin. This is the miracle of the Incarnation . This bible version and verse has always cemented my belief in Mary's perpetual virginity.

What you imply is blaspheme and it is not a joke.
Jesus to Sister Lucy of Fatima fame talked about the 5 Common Blasphemes in 1930 with private revelation to Sister Lucy.
      Quote from JESUS "
What are the 5 blaphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary?
GIVEN to Sister Lucy in private revelation, May 29 or 30, 1930):
      1) Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception.
      2) Blasphemies against Her perpetual Virginity.
      3) Blasphemies against Her Divine Maternity, in refusing at the same time to recognize Her as the Mother of men.
      4) The blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children indifference or scorn, or even hatred of this Immaculate Mother.
      5) The offences of those who outrage Her directly in Her holy images.
      "
      JESUS again...
"Here, my daughter, is the reason why the Immaculate Heart of Mary [My Mother] causes Me to ask for this little act of reparation and due to it move My mercy to forgive those souls who had the misfortune of offending her. As for you, try without ceasing, with all your prayers and sacrifices, to move Me into mercifulness toward those poor souls."

I’m sure this is also the case in other cultures and languages. I hear a lot that during Jesus’s time they didn’t have as many distinctions for family relations. The same English translation issue arises whether family distinctions are less, or more complex. As a specific example, in Polish the term Kuzyn (Cousin) is used for second cousin; but can also be used for first cousin. The term for first cousin is “Brat/Siostra Cioteczny/a” or “Brat/Siostra Wujeczny/a”meaning Brother/Sister on the Aunt-Side or Uncle-Side. It actually gets more complicated because for some reason there are different words for Uncle on mother’s side vs Uncle on father’s side (but in practice people usually use Wujek and not Stryjek for uncle).
Anyway, in real-life people talk about their Brat or Siostra (especially in the case of someone who is an only-child) and only add “on the uncles/aunts-side” when it is strictly necessary for the conversation. I’ve literally had this conversation with an acquaintance who is an only child:
Her: “… my brother is taking music lessons.”
Me: “Wait, I thought you didn’t have siblings.”
    Her: “Oh yeah, my brother-on-my-aunt’s-side.”

    • @dannogoo
      @dannogoo ปีที่แล้ว +6

As a Vietnamese, it's very easy for us to understand this. We use the same words to denote siblings and cousins of the same ranks. For example: "anh" is older brother or a male cousin from your parents older siblings or "em" , a younger sibling or cousin from your parents younger siblings.

Joseph as a God fearing 1st century Jew would never dare to touch the ark of the covenant which in ancient times was kept in the Holy of Holies in the temple that only the High Priest has access to. Now after being informed that Mary is the ark of the new covenant AND has also became the spouse of the Holy Spirit, he will definitely be in awe/fear of the impending relationship as he knows any misstep can lead to his death. Only Protestants can think that Joseph will insist on his marital rights as if that is more important than raising baby God under his roof. I just can't imagine the fear, anxiety, responsibility, and honor that Joseph must have felt. I am living with God in the flesh in my house as well as a living ark of the covenant. Don't tell me that Joseph is clueless as to the identities and ramifications of the baby/mother pair.

I myself had believed that they were engaged but not yet married, though I knew that they had different customs back then. For example, it was not unusual for a young girl to be married to an older man (often arranged to settle disputes or unite clans), however they would not live together or have marital relations until she was older and consented to move in with him.

I’m a Protestant (although converting to Orthodoxy) and have previously heard this argument. This is one of the best ways I’ve seen the whole idea laid out Joe did a great job here. Couple of things Joe left out that were impactful for me is that all the major reformers: Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, all believed in perpetual virginity and the idea Mary had children with Joseph wasn’t popular until more like 18th and 19th centuries. So to sum up Protestants are totally wrong about Mary’s Virginity and are just plain reading the text incorrectly. I really thought about what would happen in heaven when I see Mary next to the Lord and realized all this Mary hate has a Protestant is entirely inappropriate

As a convert from Prot to Cath, I have thought about the way Prots talk/think about celibacy - they seem to despise it??! Even old women (like my mother) despise it. It's almost like an anathema. I hypothesize that this is due to Luther's rejection of celibacy and his taking a nun as a wife (apparently living a more fulfilled life). Could it be that Luther's "thorn in the flesh" was his sexual desires, could it be the driving force behind his "reformation" (Faith Alone)??
I too struggle to accept celibacy (for myself), but at least I can see that this is biblical and a proper way to honor God. Prots don't seem to see this anymore. Why? It is related to their rejection of the Catholic faith - it is their "protest".

How dare you say " Mary hate." THAT is a lie. We think Mary was a wonderful human who humbly accepted her servanthood. As fully and only human, she was sinful & needed forgiveness & salvation, & does not have a place in heaven next to God, no matter how many "Catholic prayers" say she forgives others & is co-responsible for the salvation that only JESUS AS GOD OFFERS. It's blasphemous to say Mary is in any way divine...God is a jealous God & does NOT share worship due Him. A Biblical Christian understands this.

If they were merely engaged, breaking it off would guarantee her apparent adultery would be made known. So putting her away would be the worst thing he could do if sparing her scandal was his intent. But divorcing her for adultery but doing so quietly (i.e. Not saying why) would leave the impression the baby was legitimate but he just decided not to stay married to her for some other reason, because in Jewish law a man could divorce his wife for practically any reason.

      Hi, Ethan.
It's good that you as a Protestant had such appreciation as you did. Nonetheless, there's a distinction to be drawn, and it makes all the difference. The understanding that you describe makes sexual relations before the second stage morally objectionable, whereas the second stage in ancient Jewish weddings carried no assumption of continence prior to the second stage. The Jewish second stage would simply have been transfer of residence and authority structure. The implication is that both parts of Isaiah's prophesy are striking and unexpected, with the resulting compounding of the unlikelihood of fulfilment in other than the Messiah.

@shamelesspopery, Do you think the two-stage marriage hints at the Assumption? Mary's fiat could be seen, in a sense, as her consent to a spiritual "marriage," and then her Assumption could be seen as the second stage of the marriage, where her spiritual "spouse" takes her to be with Him. I'm also reminded of Revelation, where the woman clothed with the sun flees to the wilderness where a place "had been prepared for her," perhaps another allusion to the second stage of the marriage ceremony.

27:10 something more telling than the _until_ is the unbiblical assumption that having relations= having children. The parents of John the Baptist not only had relations their whole married life but were blessed with a _first born son_ only at the eve of their lives. Having children is not a _right_ but a blessing. First born son is not a number but a title.
As to the many children of Mary... where is the list? The Bible doesn't scrimp here listing children is the hobby of the Bible. It lists Mary and Clopas children (why!) but never list Mary and Josephs except for listing Jesus.

A question I have is...Did Jews around 2 BC think that Is7:14 was a Messianic prophesy that would have a 2nd fulfillment. Or was it more of an 'Easter Egg' prophesy that becomes recognizable in retrospect.

I had an advisor in grad school tell me once that any research project is defined by its foils. I think that applies to this venue as well and I think Joe could do better than respond to these folks. I know they are popular but I also suspect they don’t reflect the best in historic Protestant theology. Maybe that doesn't drive up the subscriber numbers (since rebutting inflamatory caricatures from folks like McArthur is going to get more views than rutting a more sophisticated, nuanced theologian) but I think the depth and insight we could get from Joe (and Trent and others) would be even better if the foils they chose were more serious. And I don't mean Gavin Ortlund necessarily, though Gavin interlocutor. I mean folks like Kevin Vanhoozer, Leonardo DiChirico, John Webster. I’m saying this as a Catholic but as one who has taken a lot of good things from Protestants, some of the best being those areas where they pose really good questions.

To say that Joseph is afraid to take her as his wife because of not touching her to avoid death or any miserable fortune would happen to him is a little too much. I don't think that Joseph would realized that Mary is the New Ark of the Covenant.

John Macarthur… if I didnt know any better I’d think he was intentionally leading Christians away from the truth of the Gospel with the insane number of contradictions he espouses.

I just read an encyclical of Pope Leo X111 and I read one of the canons of the council of Trent, and what did I find, a contradiction.

As someone raised Protestant and recently re-evaluating everything I once thought or was taught, I have some questions after watching this video. I understand that it was not necessarily unusual for a young woman to make a pledge of virginity in that time, but I don't understand why both she and Joseph would want to be married in that case? Why would Joseph want to enter a marriage in which he would have no children of his own? I thought one of the primary purposes of marriage was, after glorifying God, to have children. Are there any church writings or any early church fathers who speak to this?

Great talk, Joe! Next topic idea….I’d like to hear your thoughts on all these popular charismatic “demon slayer” preacher dudes who are getting a lot of hype these days. They need to be called out on their false teachings before they lead more people astray!
