Once, I was on a metal run where the highlands meet the frost zone in the Exiled Lands. My friend had suggested I take a bear with me. I figured, hey, good precaution. I had been walking around for a while, was getting pretty loaded down with iron, when I was attacked by a pack of wolves. I was doing okay for a bit, but they were wearing me down and it was looking like things were going downhill fast. I heard a very faint rumble, and then the pictish greater bear absolutely bulldozed through all the wolves, killing them all instantly. I'll never forget that life-saving attack that literally came out of left field. Bears rock.
I was told about Black Yeti protectors. That if you level a yeti up to at least level ten and stand them on a foundation that is raised up off the ground, they will throw boulders at purge enemies within range of them. And it supports melee defenders better than archers.
I use greater shaleback, I'm still quite a beginner but I feel like they Are of the strongest and easiest pets to get, they just have tons of armour and HP for loads of tanking in bosses.
Greater sabretooths are the only pets I use, they work wonders on spider caves and on meat runs. As a base defense they work well combined with human thralls because of their pounce attack throws the attacker to the ground and human thralls can pile on him after that.
The playful pups are the most useful thrall alternative. They can go anywhere without weird crowding, do big damage, and have reasonable survivability. As you said, none of them can stack up to a good thrall. Perhaps the exception to that would be Reaper Queens in the capacity of base guardians, since they can apply so much poison so quickly. Most of the big pets are so loud and ungainly that you aren't well advised to try taking them inside crowded confines. If you just need a pet to be a bearer, and aren't worried about it having any fighting skill, the little antelope fawn, has always been my go-to for around the base gathering. They're small and quiet, and can carry as much as a T2/3 bearer. They're essentially free to get and keep. Camels fill this same niche, but are harder to come by.
My favorite pets are the shaleback, they're not really good gameplay wise but I like them cuz I like turtles and knowing they're based on kappa. When I first played Conan I enjoyed these creatures cuz they don't normally attack unless you hit first. In one of my old saves I had a lot of shalebacks trying to get a greater one so my base was full of shalebacks standing around lol
Attack all at a range of 15, or 30, but move the Kappa close to target, and it will attack. I stick to the red kappa, or better. I believe that the larger kappa are female because they seem to be at the nest, and are agressive. While the smallest kappa / male is always wandering around, and passive, unless the female agros. We typically get a greater around 18. Once we had to wait to 87th kappa.
I don't know why the Greater Rocknose is not mentioned more often. For my money, that's an absolute beast of a tank. And all you gotta feed him is stone.
Greater Shaleback for levling and farming runs. Damage isn't great, but it survives and carries a bunch. Also, you can get it at Lvl 13 and there are plenty of babies to raise until you get a greater on dessert berries. - Personally, I also just enjoy them as pets to run around with. Let one lose on the Darfari camp near the Dregs and you'll have your religion leveling items in no time. If not fully leveled, because of low damage, they can also tank thralls while you try knocking them out.
Sabre's and Jags. My Lion's never seem to fight well. Their AI is screwy. Never gotten a greater Tiger yet. I delete any lessers of any pet that pops that way out of the oven. But yep, something about those Cats. Bad assery thru the roof with them
Since this post got about 8 greater tigers. 2 got God rolls to lvl 20. Wrecking machines. Can solo every world boss. Got thru the wine cellar no prob, Arena Champion up next. Yep, cats
While Brutus is my favorite combat pet, I have a soft spot for the Shaggai drones/warriors; they are easy to get, they won't block your movement, and have ten item slots to help you carry loot and resources. Additionally, their hit box is annoyingly small, so they tend to survive longer than expected in fights, which also adds to their toolkit as tanks, especially because, at least in my experience, they draw more aggro than other pets.
While I am late to the party, I absolutely love the reptilians(Outside of Kappa, but I do appreciate the early game availability of them) that the game offers as pets. Yes, they are not the best in damage nor are they the tankiest. By the lord though, they have great survival potential and they are amongst the best at what they do: stacking debuffs. Crocs are the absolute masters of bleed, Komodos are really great with poison, and Salamanders(which are actually Iguanas, but eh) actually have ranged attacks. I know my favorites are mediocre, but I don’t care about that when it comes to it in general. Mediocrity paints less of a target on your back.
I seem to be a gatherer and hoarder so the Greater Elephant is my favorite pet. He has is own little room with a conference table he presides over for players to discuss those unmentionable problems in.
I kinda like the Scorpion Queens and Kings because they look terrifying and having them on my side makes me feel like my character is more intimidating.
To be fair, you would also need a top top tier thrall to solo the Arena Champion. My 8.5k Dalinsia was destroyed easily. Next time I leveled up a bunch of Beastmaster Teimos (set up a mini base right outside the camp), got one that lucked out with perks and ended up with 14.6k HP and 20 strength (19% melee damage bonus), and he was able to solo the Arena Champion but with only 2k HP left.
On Siptah you just can't beat the playful pups, but on exiles I usually stick to thralls as they are just better. However I did once use a greater bear as a tank for a archery build I had.
I like the rhino cause their quick when you are riding them and they can knock people down when they charge at them which does tons of damage which is really good
All about that Croc, but I just like crocodiles in general so having one is great. But they do get a fair amount of health and armour plus cause some bleed as well.
Here I am having the undead nightmare as a favorite. I personally think hes a bit underrated because it can handle most bosses my current Lian thrall does, but his armor isnt very good at this point.
Greater sabre is my favorite. But i love Frost Giant too.In open space like farming bosses he really useful.Bosses cant knock him down instead of thralls. On low level he is scrap-but on max is nice.Bad thing-food bit expensive
I love so many pets in this game. Sabrecats, wolves, and bears for fighting and defense of my base for me. Elephants are my packmules. Eds...I mean, hyenas, for derpy and creepy cuteness lol I always have human thralls to back up my pets though 😉
The advantage of Thralls over pets is that you can gear them up any way you want, and they tend to have higher hitpoints. However, the advantage of pets is that you don't HAVE to gear them up, which matters in early game when you don't have a lot of resources. However, the main advantage of pets over thralls early games is carrying capacity. You get two rows with even the weakest pet like shales or hyenas, but unless you find a bearer (which aren't all over the place like pets,) you only get one row of cargo, two of which are taken up by weapon and food, leaving three slots as opposed to 9 for pets (10-1 for food). Also, getting tht hrall you want can be a bit of a pain if it's located among other thralls, unless you want to knock out all of them (which is a bitch,) or switch between weapon and club and risk killing your target thrall. My opening gambit when starting fresh is to get me a shaleback just for luggage, harvest up, get me a bearer T2+ for more harvesting, and then go for a non-greater Komodo for combat and more harvesting. The reasons are simple: Komodos are tough, and they bite hard. They also stack poison with every bite. They eat what you kill, raw. Including human flesh. They have 10 backpack slots (-1 for food.) And they are fairly near the noob river. The only disadvantage with them is that they aren't fast on the move. Riding a horse will leave them behind to skip forward to catch up, so if you run into something bad they might take a few seconds to catch up. But if they get decent traits a single lvl 20 Komodo can eat the giant croks by the river and in the brimstone cavern. My second choice pet would be a cat, likely a panther cuz they are easy to get as well. Bleed, raw meat, and decent damage and health. And again, 10 backpack slots.
I like a Greater Rocknose because they are beefy and easy to feed. I also like Shaggai Warriors because they are small, fly, and do not get in my way in Dungeons
lmao! The descriptions for the dogs, just too funny. Some of them reference other games like MK such as the perk "Get Over Here!". At least Funcon did something right.
I don't really use pets. In fairness I play PVE solo. When I was experimenting I did like the Greater Sabertooth On Siptah and Savage Wilds the various pups are pretty good and would be my first choice. I like how Brutus when told to attack takes off at speed like a real attack dog.
Right now I'm leveling a greater wolf that I've named Cinder. Shes has 26 base strength with the level 10 and 15 perks giving her a combined +8 strength.
Seems most or all pets get plus 10% damage per strength pt. That adds up! Got a Sabre that at 20 got to 450% damage. He's a wrecking machine. Names Fury
Most fun and favorite, Sabre Tooth, no contest. After that Crocodile just because it's hilarious to see him slither back to you after a fight. In the same way, the smallest scorpion. Watching that little guy chugging along after you is the best. " We the mighty shall conquer all!", as the Earth shakes on his approach As for a lot of the rest, they are simply too weak AND don't have any cool factor. Wish Yeti's and Warthog's could fight better. Have a lesser Warthog named Jack Burton. He's always giving me advice but never can win a fight. Love that guy. Yeti's , yeesh. Cool base decorations and that's it. Jags are cool and can fight but c'mon, Sabre all the way. I'm totally a dog guy and I really like the White Wolves, have a pack of them guarding my front gate but again, travelling with a Sabre... We do get attached to our pets and thralls. Funny stuff Side note, I always push agility for the armor as that's their weakest link. Any thoughts on that?
I have a question, if you put armour and Weapons on any thrall does the gear lose durability? And if so is it a pain in the ass to switch for full durability gear? I thought this would be an issue for late game with rare legendary weapons and stuff.
I like the bear Because it’s Rush attack end it hits different targets well sometimes the alligators can be a pain in the butt because they’re so short

The best pet is the one you get super lucky on rolls with and level to 20. o_o I don't think poison spray counts as range for the big bad bug since it's a short range cone... I know it works on Salamander,
the fact they are getting stuck and are totally missing a stationary target is kinda hilarious, it's as if some of the pets have no depth perception and a lazy eye lol xD
Thier AI is still pretty wonky my white tiger missed a black ape when it was right in front of it. My tiger just turned around and swung at thin air... sigh. They should probably look into this.
Wonder why the lion/greater lion is never mentioned, its super out of the way to get and the grown males guarding the pups are always 1 skull, are they so mediocre they dont rate in any list?
Is it true that Sabertooths act as a mobile fridge? I've heard that anything that you'll put inside that cat stops decaying. I didn't get too deep into pets - I only got bears, which for now are my favorite, and hyenas, as they are easy to getxin early game in Exiled Lands.
@@Bubbles99718 one thing I like about them that you can feed them with man flesh, which makes them so barbaric! best friend of Darfaris that's for shure

Their gowth% got limited when Funcom allowed the spiders to get growth% in Accuracy, but I also like the greater scorpion's knockdown AOE attacks for purge defense!
@@todd.cannon I have a Mammoth I just leveled up a bit. Took him to fight other mammoths. Pretty annoying to see that he was actually smaller than the mammoths in the wild! So between shrinkage and yeah, pretty lackluster damage output.... 30 slots is nice though
My favorite pet? Well...hard to say. I love all the pets. But I think I'd have to go for the Spider pets. I love spiders, and I have always had one corrupted spider at least. I know they aren't FANTASTIC pets, but I've raised mine to be tanky and they always survive a purge. They also hit harder than the scorpion king at level 1, funnily. Their rate of attack is nice too. But I also have an affection for any of the cats. I like the Greater Panther and the Greater Tiger the most though
@@goldenfleece2600 The only greater variant in the game as of current is the Corrupted spider pet. And that's the one I use. I have them guarding my base x3
I have a bunch of the smallest ones along with the smallest scorpions. Those little chuggers just crack me up. Hilarious standing next to a Yeti or Mammoth. And watching them swarm out to attack is epic. Here comes the Mighty Mights!! Love it
Wtf is with all those survival/accuracy stats that the game just slaps on randomly? You can have a thrall equipped with armor, weapons, potions, food buffs, a consumable manuscript ánd coming out of the box with a higher percentage of chance to increase certain stats and STILL, the likelihood of the thrall getting a random, shit perk, is HUGE. On top of this, it takes hours to level up a thrall so A LOT of time is WASTED this way ánd I've never had a thrall with all three perks being what I wanted. The biggest amount of somewhat favorable perks was 2 out of a possible 3 ánd it only included a +2 or 3 on whatever that favorable perk was with a +5, at best. Trash and game breaking for me. Someone should tell the developers to make it so that the chance of getting the perks YOU WANT is very big, however, it should require more effort, take more time, require a certain amount of favorable conditions that players can activate ON THEIR OWN and only then it should GUARANTEE that you get the stats you want. On top of this, the player's health pool abhorrently low and is too much based off of multiplayer experiences with multiple people taking on a world boss, not at single player. The game should include a feature where a player's health pool can be selected to adapt to playing offline in single player or online in multiplayer. Currently, taking on bosses on your own forces you to kite those bosses around things too much, getting them stuck in things too often, manipulating the environment etc. Part of that is understandable, part of it is needing players to be too finicky.
Fun factor is a thing. Rolling with a Sabre Tooth can't be beat. And on the other end the smallest scorpion trundling along after you is one of the best things ever
I do like to have a couple greater wolves or Brutus dogs at my place for added life. I just don't find pets to be as effective for fighting as a good thrall with great weapons and armor.
Another part of it which is a credit to the game over all is sound design. They really nailed the sounds of all the critters. The rumble of the big cats and growls of wolves and on down the line is epic and does a great job towards immersion. Watching a Sabre leap with a roar as some poor cook scrrams and gets shredded is gamer heaven. Pretty horrifying actually. Could you imagine any of this stuff happening in real life? :)
By the Spotted Hyena being my favorite animal im surprised it's not bigger and stronger than the wolf smh🤦🏿♂️. This poor animal gets so much hate thanks to the inaccurate ass lion king. They're not even canines They're closely related to cats like c'mon 😑 😒

the fact they are getting stuck and are totally missing a stationary target is kinda hilarious, it's as if some of the pets have no depth perception and a lazy eye lol xD
Thier AI is still pretty wonky my white tiger missed a black ape when it was right in front of it. My tiger just turned around and swung at thin air... sigh. They should probably look into this.
Have 1 lion. His ai is always screwy
And what about mammoth? Is it better then greater elephant?
The hp and armor is tremendously better than both combined but the damage sadly is worse than a regular elephant :(
Is the elephant bigger cause its on pc?? Cause console makes them look like baby sized
That’s a greater elephant 🐘
@@wak4863 yeah on ps4 the tamed ones are no where near the size of their npc counter parts. so sad
Shrinkage
Keep them out of the pool
Wak deserve a melee weapon named after him 💯👌🤘🤘
Wonder why the lion/greater lion is never mentioned, its super out of the way to get and the grown males guarding the pups are always 1 skull, are they so mediocre they dont rate in any list?
Just got my first three pets there just the turtle things though
Greater bear or white tiger
Great rhino my fav.
best pet is a horse. then take a thrall with you wherever you go lol
Is it true that Sabertooths act as a mobile fridge? I've heard that anything that you'll put inside that cat stops decaying. I didn't get too deep into pets - I only got bears, which for now are my favorite, and hyenas, as they are easy to getxin early game in Exiled Lands.
Wish Hyena's were stronger. Love them
Pretty sure their food decays. Gotta check that now
@@Bubbles99718 one thing I like about them that you can feed them with man flesh, which makes them so barbaric! best friend of Darfaris that's for shure
@@Bubbles99718 I saw once a video on yt of a dude running with snow cat [I can't exactly recall if it was Sabertooth] but he had bunch of potions with decay timers that he stored inside that cat to prevent them from decaying
@@OlSkunGun pretty sure they removed that, it was the same with storing potions in horses and dogs too but also doesnt work anymore
Brutus is the best. Good boy.
Yakith pack leader
mamoth best ever with 6 rows of inv
King and queen scorpions... Knockdown every hit and has a bonus poison.
Their gowth% got limited when Funcom allowed the spiders to get growth% in Accuracy, but I also like the greater scorpion's knockdown AOE attacks for purge defense!
I love the mighty boar and the jungle Claws the most
It seems that the elephants should be the most powerful. It's strange to me that they made them so weak compared to the others.
They're slow and they miss. That's a bad combo. But yep
@@Bubbles99718 True, they are slow and they miss but if they hit you it should really wreck your shit. And right now it doesn't. :P
@@todd.cannon I have a Mammoth I just leveled up a bit. Took him to fight other mammoths. Pretty annoying to see that he was actually smaller than the mammoths in the wild! So between shrinkage and yeah, pretty lackluster damage output....
30 slots is nice though
brutus is always my go to name for dogs in any game :)
Wish you told us where to find them………
Sup my guyyy
Pets that I love: None of them, they're all garbage compared to a fighter thrall 😉😉
Japanese tiger bro...
What type of spider? Like do greater spiders exists and if they do are they the best possible spider pet?
@@goldenfleece2600 The only greater variant in the game as of current is the Corrupted spider pet. And that's the one I use. I have them guarding my base x3
@@Shikamarulover12345 haha nice 👍
I have a bunch of the smallest ones along with the smallest scorpions. Those little chuggers just crack me up. Hilarious standing next to a Yeti or Mammoth. And watching them swarm out to attack is epic. Here comes the Mighty Mights!! Love it
the best to get is a long and arduous process . . . . girl friend immediately came to mind.
Pets are cute but not worth the effort in my opinion. I will always get thralls over pets anyday.
I agree
Fun factor is a thing. Rolling with a Sabre Tooth can't be beat. And on the other end the smallest scorpion trundling along after you is one of the best things ever
@@Bubbles99718 For the fun factor I can see that.
sandbeast; sabretooth; n kamodo
By the Spotted Hyena being my favorite animal im surprised it's not bigger and stronger than the wolf smh🤦🏿♂️. This poor animal gets so much hate thanks to the inaccurate ass lion king. They're not even canines They're closely related to cats like c'mon 😑 😒
