Mercedes Touchpad Replacement

- In this video we replace a broken COMAND Touchpad. The touchpad has a 3cm crack in the plastic surface that has been growing for about 1 year. Cause is unknown but I have found an uncracked used one so it's time for replacing the existing unit.
This video is applicable to W213/S213/A238 and C238 models and likely applicable to W205 models as it uses the same system.

Hey guys - trying to do some good Karma here. You’ll find on eBay some Chinese replacement parts for the topmost glass section only. The replacement is plastic. You CAN successfully only change that part. You’ll need a Number 9 torx as well.
Reference the video “How to replace the center mouse handwriting touchpad of Mercedes” by BettyLin.
You’ll need to use a hairdryer or a heat gun and eventually pry the topmost piece from the correct location. Best of luck, hopefully I can save someone some cash. Reply if you need help in the future boys.
Mine was cracked very badly when I bought my Benz. Now it’s perfect, I’ve just replaced it. Huge monkey off my back!
Yes i have seen that in AliExpress you can now get replacement screens: you can now even get complete units for about €50. Whist i agree with all that you have said, it sounds like an awful lot of work rather than plug and play the original, especially with the new units being so relatively inexpensive?
@@mercedes_and_more Stateside I was looking at a minimum of $110-$200 for a clean unit with shipping and taxes, Aliexpress I did not see any complete units unfortunately that would have been easier - a link to that would be helpful for future viewers
I only share my anecdotes to help, your video is heaps and bounds more helpful. I’ve honestly watched it multiple times over. I just happened to go about it in a different direction and thought it was nearly impossible and that I had wasted $50 on a chinesium piece of copied plastic, on my first impression. Turns out I now have a good unit! Cheers mate thank you for having such a well produced video

I love your videos because they are so informative and I also own a C238, so thank you so much. Your previous videos about changing the brakes on them will help me greatly when the time comes.I've just one bit of advice, please try and improve the video quality, i selected 108op but it seems slightly out of focus, if it's down to the software you are using to create the videos i can recommend something that I use if you want on my youtube channels. If it's not the software, then use an Iphone 11 or better to record the video and make sure it's set to maximum recording potential, it can even do 4K.

Niall, thank you for the positive comments and i am glad you like the content. We do record on an iPhone 12 in HD but i suspect it is the editing software as i use Microsoft movie maker (as it’s on my laptop). I suspect i need an upgrade but TH-cam has always been a bit of fun so think we’ll need an upgrade to progress further. I’ll try and do better for the next video
@@mercedes_and_more ah that makes sense, i can recommend Camtasia softtware for video editing and easy upload to youtube, it's what I use and it handles up to 4k easily

Great video! I also own a a238 (pre-owned) since a few days and the controller has a brick too. Of course Mercedes refuses to replace it due to warranty reasons. So I bought a pre owned controller and I will take your video as a reference. Many thanks for it! Keep going!

Great video. I'm looking to swap my gloss black for the ash black, where did you source the used one? I've got the part number a2386801503 for the ash black, but only see new ones for 500+ euros.

I bought a complete console on eBay and then (just because i didn’t know if so the switches worked and because my control buttons around the touchpad were different as i have air suspension) swapped all the parts over. I sourced mine from U.K. (a friend brought it over) and sold the piano one to a buyer in Italy (!) via Ebay (Germany).
Not sure about prices now (i swapped mine in summer 19), but don’t forget as long as yours isn’t too scratched you can always sell on your piano black console to reclaim some of the cost?
@@mercedes_and_more Thanks for the tips I'll keep hunting for a used one maybe a console and then sell my piano black. It's in good shape but it has the typical light scratches all over it that are super annoying. Keep up the great content on the W213 E Class!

@@mercedes_and_more I have a Xentry bulletin advising replacement, showed it to Mercedes, who said they hadn't seen it, then said "sorry you are out of warrenty" but offered to replace it for £400. I bought the car second hand from them, with the fault. - I just bought a touch pad off eBay for £100.
@@absenteeatom similar story with me, out of warranty and not interested. Think mine was €85 which is why i bought it as i had not seen a decent one for under €125 up to that point. Noticed last week i think the one on my wife’s car (4 weeks older than mine) is also going….
Do you think your able to replace the old track pad with the new flat version from the facelift. Also keep all the sam panelling and buttons. Looking to replace it on my e class coupe.
Gosh that's a really good question! I think that in some far Eastern markets (mainly China) they had the flat panel instead of the touchpad as that's what the market prefers. I suspect it fits in the same space, but whether the wiring is the same I don't know. Maybe ask on one of the forums?

Great video, I have an A238 and just like you my touchpad is cracked in 2 places, the crack just appeared out of nowhere, where did you buy your replacement touchpad from and how much for, I would like to change mine too, it’s annoying me.
I bought mine used on eBay and it was about €100. Currently they are about that for a half decent one. I have recently seen them new on AliExpress for about €75. Also not that whilst I’m sure that one from a C Class might work, the symbols are different. Personally i didn’t risk it and waited for a used E class one

I think you can as i have seen replacement ones for sale on AliExpress for about €35 (and new complete touchpads for about €80). Not sure how you get them off though but maybe destructive experimentation is the answer 🤔😂
Hello, at around 1:20 you start by opening up the console and removing the 2 rubber buttons. On my 2019 C300, I don’t have those rubber buttons. Any advice to get past that first step? Thx in advance!

Follow up question, seeing as you drive this daily, do you ever notice crackling sound coming from your drivers door as you are driving, i can't seem to locate the sound, sometimes i think it's the AC, sometimes the door assembly, sometimes the seat controls, but it's annoying and i'd like to stop it, if you also have this problem, please let me know how to fix it or do one of your great videos showing how to do it :-) thanks !
Erm! I have to say my door is silent! The only annoying sun i have is the occasional clonk from the rear which i think might be a top Mount for the air suspension (?). Have you checked on the forums to see if it is a known problem?

Will the new touchpad work from the 2021 model since its not that different but just has the touchpad ?
I think that the NTG 5.5 and 6 systems are different so nees different touchpads. Unless you know you can get a refund, i’d stick to a one for one replacement 👍

Before I replace the touchpad, as I don't like it, I was thiking of changing the control panel for one with the wheel only without the touchpad. Do you think it is doable? I was unable to find information online. People usually replace it for another touchpad.

@@bassamshehab90 i think the auto translate has lost something in translation. I could not work out how to remove the plastic too but so replaced the whole thing. Hopefully that answers your question?
the one i have stopped responding (just the touchpad and the 3 buttons). Can you please share the part number (my car E220d w213 2017) ... also do you know how much a new part from MB would cost (UK). cheers.
A213 900 4291 is the part number. Whilst the touchpad from C Class cars should work, it has a different graffic for the home button, so you never know. I have no idea what the new price is as I went straight to the used market.

Do you know what type of mini screw holds the mouse writing touchpad top cover piece? It looks like a tiny tiny maybe torx screw?
Think it is a T9. I’d can look on the old one (i still have it) but am currently travelling. I’ll have a look at the weekend

Yes, it may be necessary to dismantle everything to be able to do it and even for the moment I am not yet sure that it is possible to simply change the facade.

Do you know if these ones are plug & play if keeping the old "controller" (the one with the Continental sticker)? Mine got cracked (GLC 300 X253) and trying to get another one (second hand) but I'm worried about compatibility.
Mine was plug and play. What i don’t know though is if a C Class one would fit in an E for example. It should but it has different symbols.
@@mercedes_and_more Already ordered it (With return warranty). It has the central symbol different (Mine has skip song and the other one has the bottom menu icon), I'll post results here as soon as I change it to help more people in the future.
I just changed my brocken controller yesterday and after the replacement the new one (it was a used one) did not work. Did you also change the chip set from the controller or did you put the old chip set in the new controller? Maybe the car recognize if there is a new chip set and therefore it doesn't work?

Maybe you bought one for a C Class which is different from the E Class (by mistake). The C has a * for the home button on not a little house symbol. I didn’t change the electronics under the touchpad but i changed the “chip” in the vertical bit (the part with the label/QR code on it) from the old to the new one.
@@mercedes_and_more Thanks for answer! I bought new one from Mercedes, too. Of course with the no. A238... and now it works.So the previous one was completely brocken. Whats very interesting: The controller clicks only by pushing the 3 buttons, if it is correctly connected and working. If you hold it in your hands separately, it does not do "clicking sounds" by pushing.

@@KonradF there is coding to switch on/off haptic feedback so i expect there is some kind of signal/pulse generator within the circuitry. Not surprised - remember the Germans love technical solutions for non technical problems 😂😂

Sounds like it’s on its way out? Could be worth making sure that it is clean - especially the groove around the top surface so that it can actually move downwards when you press it 👍

I bought it on Ebay.de. It is also available on other eBay’s but this worked best at the time 👍👍.

You should have changed it to the new style
At the time the new style wasn’t out but either way I don’t like or use the touchpad as I twist and move the wheel. I send map directions directly from my phone. Replacement was for aesthetic reasons 👍
