The lack of reactions from the kids is definitely one of the biggest issues. It's like they're not even relevant characters anymore. I was so hyped to see what effect going through this crazy fight and learning about all these crazy revelations was going to have on them. I had so many questions, like "Will any of the students rethink wanting to be heroes and walk away from the fight?" "Will any of the students become vengeful after seeing so much death?" "How will Todoriki, Ochako, and Iida react to the truth about Deku?" "Will anyone be hurt or angry that Deku has struck out on his own?" "Will Bakugo struggle to recover physically from what seemed like a very significant injury, or will having come so close to death have any sort of emotional impact on him?" It seemed like such a perfect time to deepen our favorite characters or ones who haven't gotten the spotlight yet. But instead, it was just... nothing.

MHA just don't hit like it used to. All these super 'BIG' events have been happening for the last couple of arcs, but I consistently finish each chapter feeling mostly underwhelmed.
There's been no room for storylines to breath, and a lack of long term consequences that personally resonate with the characters makes everything feel kinda hollow.

    • @Ebon_Sean
      @Ebon_Sean ปีที่แล้ว +31

@Mathew Chacko honestly, it's been even longer for me. The last time I truly enjoyed MHA was the Overhaul arc, which wrapped up in the manga in early 2018. That's five years, at this point. The main two arcs after that point that everyone hypes up are My Villain Academia and Paranormal Liberation War. This video airs out the flaws of the latter, and the former fails to fix what has always been one of MHA's biggest problems for me - the villains are too half-baked.

Honestly, the last time I felt "satisfied" with mha was probably the school festival arc. It was a nice resolution after the whole Overhaul arc, like, the kids went through some really rough stuff and now they get to breathe and be kids. Eri is now in the process of healing from all the bad things that happened, and we're setting up that she could eventually, maybe, restore Mirio's quirk. I liked that arc because it gave the story a moment to breathe, it gave the students something to do that was low stakes as a cap to the previous storyline, it developed their relationships. And then everything became big thing after big thing and it felt like the story somewhat lost its way? I don't really know how to explain it, but it seriously lost me after that. At this point I only follow it to see how it ends

The consiquences of the adult characters being undermined like Mirko losing limbs, Best Jeanist coming back suddenly, Hawks having his back incinerated and Aizawa being seriously injured also damaged the themes of the story. If the adult characters were all out of comission (save Endeavor since he still has a lot of story left to tell), it would force class 1-A to step up and be the next generation. But the adult characters are still leading the fight and class 1-A isn't nearly as central as they should be. Monoma having to use Erasure is excellent, but with Aizawa there it's more like Monoma is a living prosthetic for Aizawa in the way the scene is framed. Hawks could have fully passed the torch onto Tokoyami, but Hawks is still on the front lines. Ojiro would be a decent successor to Mirko in terms of fighting style and yet Mirko just has prosthetics instead, and what could have been a good arc for Ojiro never happened because the story just kept moving along at that breakneck pace. And having Mirko, have to slow down would give her lots of opportunities to develop since she can't just brute force her way through life on her own terms anymore. Living vicariously through Ojiro would have been an interesting manifestation of her no longer being able to do everything she used to.
Class 1-A played support to the Pro Heroes in the war arc, and in this final act, the heroes should be supporting class 1-A instead, and yet it somehow still feels like our characters in a coming of age story are just the apprentices. Bakugo and Deku feel like the only members of 1-A who matter anymore, with a few of them like Tokoyami and Jiro getting compensated with moments. The consiquences of the war arc were all undone but it undid the story's potential even more

Very well said. By far the worst aspect of the Final Act of MHA, at least in my opinion, is how it retroactively diminishes the impact of not only this arc, but arguably a good portion of the story as a whole, both narratively and thematically. I was willing to forgive the cluttered mess that was the end of the last fight in this arc if it led to some genuinely good stuff (and don't get me wrong, the hospital stuff is hands-down some of Horikoshi's best writing with 305 being my personal favorite chapter in the whole series), but so, so much of what we have gotten since has felt lackluster at best and like a massive slap in the face at worst. During this arc, it felt like MHA had so much potential to soar to even greater heights, but now all I'm hoping is that by the end it can crawl its way back to the levels of excitement I felt in the middle of PLW.

Bro most of these complaints I was already making during the weekly release.
I remember being so disappointed by how easily and quickly Shigaraki's new army fell. Te lack of utilization of the Liberation Front members. The removal of ReDestro and the High Ends that were so well built up. Shigaraki never gets to put the leadership skills he's learned to good use. He wakes up, and while in the moment his mass destruction is fucking awesome... I couldn't help but hope the arc would take a quick beat. Give Shiggy just a sec to co-ordinate an actual plan or counter attack with his team. Hell, even if that was too much to ask for, it felt so cheap how through most of his fight with Deku- he's just nerfed completely. Just taking punches. Then passing out. Then being taken over by a much lamer villain.
Deku and Shiggy finally meet. It's their first meeting since the Stain arc. These fated rivals finally clash. And Deku just kicks and screams. Never really says anything interesting until literally the end. When he decides that villains may need saving. Whcih is.. an obvious route to take. But it never felt like the arc was building up to that Deku never seems all that shaken by Shiggy and Dabi's villainous monologues about the flaws of the society he used to blindly believe in.
I'd say the only good parts of the arc that still hold up when I read them are the Hawks and Dabi moments. Yeah, they are kinda weakened by the shitty follow through in later arcs, but they at least feel like Hori making the absolute MOST of the pieces he's put in place. At least for the moment.

  • @noodlespence8080

I agree with your point that the war arc(and all future arcs leading up to the final war arc) have just completely glossed over the issues regarding the reaction of the kids and the villains to the war. Class 1-A, and ALL of UA as a whole just witnessed the deaths of thousands of heroes, including their teachers/mentors, civilians and learn some dark truths about hero society. These children have been through severe trauma and suffering that will NEVER be undone and the story just brushes past it like it's a normal instance to occur to a bunch of high schoolers. The manga does nothing to address the emotional weight of the war arc and how it impacted to kids overall.
While it can be argued that the manga does show how it affected the kid by showing them be more mature and working in unison to finally put an end to All For One's reign, it only implies that they were affected. Sure we see them cry and be furious, but it doesn't go any deeper than that. It doesn't show how the kid have been changed internally in terms of thoughts and emotions. Even if they show towards the end, it'll make the tone of the manga come off as emotionally drained instead of satisfying.
As for the villains, the lack of reaction to Twice'd death completely undermines their whole vibe of found family. These villains developed bonds and friendships with each other and fought side by side with one another and yet when one of their own dies, it's just completely ignored by virtually everyone.
To me, This whole war arc has only shown that the battles that the heroes' and villains endured have succeeded and emotionally hardening everyone, making them seem cold and distant from the war as a way to cope. And I'm not sure if that's the interpretation of this situation to that Horikoshi's going for.

I feel like the only one we should've seen react to Twice other than Toga was Shigaraki at the least. Toga's reaction was exactly what it needed to be, but AFO taking over shiggy and denying us his perspective on the losses of twice and compress is one of his biggest fumbles

    • @noodlespence8080
      @noodlespence8080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@TheCreed1217 I agree. Shigaraki was the one of the closest people to Twice after Toga. But since All for One consumed Tomura and he supposedly "no longer exists", now we may never know how he truly feels about Twice's death. Just because he's a villain does not mean he doesn't have any feelings or emotions toward losing the ones he cares about. By doing this whole plot of Shigaraki losing himself to All for One, you turn him into a 2-dimensional villain who only cares about watching the whole world burn without having any depths or valid reasons behind it.

    3. Everyone glancing over Endeavor's abuse. Not even the kids, or all might react to it. Not a single person said "Child abuse! He should be in prison!" In the very least, Dabi's dance is one of the best moments ever.
    2. Shigaraki being taken over. This absolutely drove me nuts, and they completely ruined the main villain for it. When watching Season 6, I thought this was DEFINETELY the worst part of the show. I enjoyed when Shigaraki destroyed the manifestation of All for One... Only for that to be undone. However, in retrospect, this was just the second most annoying thing to happen in this show.
    1. The most annoying thing in this show... Is pretty much the lack of care for Deku's quirk. This is probably the most important reveal in the entire anime. Dabi being Endeavor's son is definetely a contender, however that one is both a shock to the characters AND the audience, which makes it extremely effective. This one is different: it's a secret that we already know about, but the characters don't (save for a few). The question here is, how do they react when they find out?
The result is quite disappointing. Not enough questions are being asked about it. How does Endeavor feel about being second place to a literal kid? How do the other pros feel about having to rely on him, a KID?!?
How does Class 1A feel about this? This video is exactly right; they all just accept it together, instead of questioning the whole thing, and forming their own doubts. I'm surprised Iida and Uraraka weren't hurt by this, as they were close with Deku.
This all goes double for Todoroki; he should be swelling with emotions over this. He's finding out that one of his best friends has the quirk of the previous number 1 hero, and never told him about it. Todoroki would understand Deku's pain the most, since he is the son of the current number 1 hero, a guy who has litterally abused him trying to make him perfect. Just imagine the pain he would have, seeing All Might have a great relationship with his successor, while Todoroki is having an awful one with his dad, especially with the Dabi reveal. I honestly think Todoroki should be questioning his friendship with Deku.
So, pretty much no one has a strong opinion on Deku having One for All, which is quite disappointing. However, let's look at All Might, as he has done something arguably as bad as Endeavor.
All Might: "You abused your children to force them to become heroes?"
Endeavor: "Aren't you doing the same to Midoriya?"
Now yes, All Might isn't litterally abusing Deku or forcing him to do anything, and he is constantly trying to make sure he's okay. All Might is a great mentor. However, that doesn't matter in the eyes of the public. Here's what the public sees:
He gave his quick to a 15 year old kid. He entrusted the strongest power in the entire world... to a boy who can't handle it, a boy who snaps his arms every time he tries to use it. He basically threw another kid onto the battlefield who didn't need to be there. All Might was never questioned for this decision?
Now yeah, the show does address this, with the Pros deciding not to tell the public about One for All, as that would put a bigger target on Deku and All Might. However, if All for One really views All Might as "pathetic," (which he litterally calls him that), then why doesn't he try to destroy his legacy?
All he has to do is say, "By the way, want to know why All Might isn't protecting you right now? It's because he gave his powers to a 15 year old kid." Boom, All Might is now ruined, and framed as a groomer. Now in the public's eyes, he's no different than Endeavor, and the hero society is FOREVER ruined. Even Hero Killer Stain would despise him! (Though I will honestly admit, I'm glad All for One did not do this, as ruining All Might would seriously destroy the show).
This is addressed atleast, as the Pros speculate that All for One isn't going public about Deku, because he doesn't want the heroes to hide Deku in an unreachable place. This... Is a logical conclusion. Still, I wish more thought was put into the story and explanations. I love this arc, but too much happened at once, and it needed more fleshing out. Just my 2 cents.

I truly hate the AFO taking over Shigi’s body thing. It halted his character progression. MHA as a whole is a series that really needed a time skip. Show the aftermath of the war (better) on both sides, deku goes on the run, then BOOM, timeskip, 3 years later “dark deku” arc starts
    At least that’s my take

I know the main issue here. Its because Horikoshi no longer has passion with MHA anymore. He is skimming through chapters by chapters, pulling shit out of his ass because honestly he just wants to end his series already. The war arc was basically his limit for giving passion to his work because now, he's fast forwarding everything with out having any real proper growth. Its shitty reasoning but thats the reason

My least favorite part about the arc was Bakugo's hero name. The whole point of his previous crappy hero names was to show how off base he was on what a hero is. Those cringey, try-hard names show he is a violent, egoistical asshole who just wants to beat people up to prove what a big boy he is. A REAL hero name should inspire hope and safety in civilians, allude to your quirk to discourage villains, or be at least be marketable, all other hero names aim for these. Bakugo seeing the only man he wants to improve himself for return from the dead to heat his hero name should be a moment of growth where Bakugo can take the lessons hes learned up till now and accept what it means to be a hero.
Instead, he doubles down on the cringey, try-hard, impossible to remember jumble of middle school nonsense he started the series as, only this time everyone playcates him! It just goes to show, Bakugo will never ACTUALLY change, no matter how much character development he goes through, because I guess his abrasive personality is more marketable to the pansyies in charge. Vegetta all over agian.

The Deku damage one literally doesn’t make sense in my opinion. Do you know what one for all is? Stockpiled energy that not only increases the strength speed and agility of the user, but also the durability. Meaning that his ability to take damage is on par with his ability to dish out attacks. For example for a 100% deku to be hurt he would have to be hit with an attack that scales to his power. This includes everything whether it be burns from fire or just brute force. He isn’t like shoto and Bakugo in the sense that his body has a normal pain and durability threshold. It’s like superman tanking bullets. That’s part of one for all. Now at the beginning when he could only use 5% and he would use 100% he was receiving damage of roughly 95% more than what his body could handle. Now in order to rise to the 45% that he possessed at the time that means his body had to adapt and become stronger. It also means that as opposed to receiving damage of 95% more than he can handle, he received damage of 55% more than he can handle. This is a severe drop off and explains why the damage to his body doesn’t scale the same. It isn’t an asspull, it’s logical.

The cast in JJK is much smaller yet it managed to show us that civillian no.552 is absolutely obliterated in the Shibuya arc and it managed to also show us how much destruction there is. Were fully aware about the lives at stake even outside the Jujutsu cast and were shown with such a good minimalistic non intrusive approach, because no one really cares about literal background characters and yet they are really important when it comes to a "War" arc. How many times do i have to see Civilians in MHA start their 15th Riot, how many times do we need them to be shoved into our faces with a "OMG these are not my heroes !" scenes.. okay we get it, morally grey, unrest, cool.. Show don't tell.. MHA has the worst exposition dump problem i've ever seen, it's one thing to narrate fights, it's an other to be told and shown the fucking blood type of every character at the start of each episode, every appearance.. Has to rotate thru all the heroes, make a freeze frame, pull a comic mozaik filter over it, roll out the details of the hero down to their hobbies whilst explaining how their quirk works for the hundredth time, repeat until there is no character left, repeat until there is no episode is left, u bet your ass it added up over 113 episodes.
I feel like the only people that give a crap about MHA characters are hardcore fans, like not fun fans but like.. sad fans.. the kind you look at and you experience second hand Suicidal ideation.
Bakugo, Midoriya, Shoto.. Named all the characters 90% of people that actively consume the series really care about. Like you'd think someone like Ochako is really important, i can't remember a single scene about Ochako, not since the tournament arc, what even happened with her since ? Did she just exists and idolize Deku ? Das all ? She's a one Dimensional character. Yet we are constantly led to believe she's a core member of the cast. 113 Episodes people.. That's 2 Days of run time.. The toddler sized grapefruit head literal sexual predator, the literal comic relief character has more screen time, has more to say then Ochako..
2016 was the year S1 aired, 8 years since, those 16y old kids grown up to be 24 but the show didn't grow in maturity, the complexities that it has are only temporary, even if Ochako had a Character development moment u bet it's been long forgotten exactly because the change was not Fundamental, it was not consistent, it was just for those few pages, just for that one scene in that one episode. And that's just Ochako, i don't even know let alone care who the Frog girl is, i watched all of the aired episodes and i don't know her name.. Acid girl ? Who gives a flying fuck. The mountain face guy with the weird voice ? The shinny bellybutton guy ? The others at least had something going here and there but i wouldn't really call that a achievement, not gonna be led to believe these guys are Class "A" let alone Class A in terms of Character..
will watch MHA just for the sake of seeing the resolution to it but this is just a shit show at this point.

what annoys me the most is that the show started differently. Everything seemed to matter, every decision had lasting results. Be it Ida's injured hand and often desperation to overcome his failures as a hero when it mattered, Deku's injuries, Momo's insecurity for failing during the school festival, Bakugo's descent into cornering himself until he breaks, Shoto's opening up and trying to figure his position out, but not without steps back and forth. For most characters that had any significant screen time, there were elements that were lasting, that were defining, that went on to linger even when the plot didn't focus on it anymore.
And all of that is gone now, and that is what frustrates me the most. It feels like giving up on the story, and trying to wrap it up, not making an actual good story anymore.

14:50 also post War arc Deku’s power scaling is a complete mess now, we spend hundreds of chapters keeping up with his progress up to him using 20%+ Air Force and Black whip, then for the war arc we jump to 45% (which isn’t a big deal for me) and Float, ok it’s a bit much but we still kinda know his limits, then on act III he gets new prostetics who just vaguely help his arms, danger sense, smoke, Fa Jin and supposedly All Might level strength in a single arc, in the current arc I have no idea how strong Deku is, how far can he go with his quirk, the limits of his support gear, NOTHING

I mean we haven't been able to quantify shigaraki's upper limits either so why cant you be invested. Shigaraki's benchmark is at least prime all might level if not higher, as has been stated in the last war and reiterated in the current chapter. I dont think you need it explained to you how All Might was the strongest character in the verse fucked up, so just imagine he's even stronger in his prime.
Deku's strength would have to rival Prime AMs if not surpass it to stand a chance and his vast array of quirks can jump him to a false 100% level. Meaning he can match AM at least, but now that shigaraki's body is reaching the singularity and his body is at 100%, there's no telling what he can do with quirks in the mix.
So tldr physically theyre probably on par, abilities unsure because most of dekus skills are only useful as support, fajins power buff and we still don't know what the 2nds quirk can do. You should just go in expecting an AFO vs AM like fight except x10 in terms of power(s)

Ever since the war arc, I felt that the story was rushing through plot lines. A real shame too since; as we've seen before, a rushed ending can ruin a series. I even thought to myself that Gran Torino should've died during the fight against Shigaraki, as it would've been a perfect send off for his character. Not to mention, more heroes that we were familiar with should've been killed off as well, further emphasizing the need for the next generation of student heroes to take their teachers places. Another issue I had was that Lemillion definitely came out of nowhere during the war. I understand Horikoshi wanted to wrap up his plot line and not leave people guessing but still "time and a place". I also felt that the Tartarus Escapees Arc should've lasted somewhat longer, with Midoriya falling deeper and darker. Becoming a straight vigilante, like Batman or Stain even. I even had this idea where Midoriya would follow some questionable advice from one of the Vestiges and go so far as to threaten to drop a criminal off the side of a building unless he talks. But the last issue I had was the fact that Endeavor and Hawks weren't berated by the public enough throughout their paths to redemption. I really expected Horikoshi would've had a majority of sidekicks at Endeavor's agency resign but only a handful of them (including Burnin) actually stayed. It also would've been interesting if someone had vandalized Hawk's agency and spray painted "MURDERER" on the wall, and he's left questioning whether or not he made the right call in killing Twice.

The idea of "the older generation refusing to let go of their hold on the newer generation" could work if they kept going with Shigaraki achieving independence and stepping away from AFO's shadow as the true antagonist of the series, showing that he has surpassed Deku as a character bound to the older generation, while Deku is saddled with the legacy of OFA and continues trying to force himself to become the next Symbol of Peace despite the strain it puts on him physically and mentally because he can't let go of the fact that he has inherited All Might's power and karmic burden as the one Hero meant to lead others into the future.
A future, while bright, that is still shackled to the past.
It could work by having Shigaraki be the one moving forward and leaving his mentor's shadow behind him while Deku still struggles beneath All Might's.

Horikoshi initially planned for Endeavor to die during the PLF war, and this idea would have worked well if Shoto was the central character in the Todoroki subplot. Shoto could have taken charge of dealing with Touya, the "final villain," and the rest of the family could support him. However, it seems Shoto is no longer the central character in this subplot. He's not allowed to have a final fight with Touya until Touya confronts Endeavor. This shift is noticeable from the start of the series, where Shoto was the central figure in his family drama. In the Pro Hero arc, Endeavor becomes a central figure in the pro-hero world. When Touya's identity is confirmed, either Endeavor or Shoto had to stop being the central figure. This change makes Endeavor the central figure in the fight, even though the subplot started as Shoto's story. The survival of Endeavor forces Shoto into a supporting role, altering the trajectory of the narrative.
