The remarkable medical discovery of the 19th century

  • Until the mid-1800s, doctors didn’t know of the importance of washing their hands. They believed diseases travelled in a “miasma” - a floating cloud of sickness.
As a consequence, hospitals were built for airborne threats.
From the ' European Plague Doctor' wearing the beaked mask in the 17th century to prevent these 'bad smells' from infecting them to Florence Nightingale, who even though was a firm believer in miasma theory, implemented hygiene policy in hospitals during the Crimean War.
However, the first recorded importance of handwashing seems to have come from the year 1848 and it all started with Dr Ignaz Semmelweis, who fought to convince his fellow doctors that washing their hands could save patients’ lives. Unfortunately his ideas were faced with great resistance and he had a tragic end.
Over the next 40 years, germ theory came into place, with Dr John Snow, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch raising awareness of the existence of pathogens and their impact.
