Hip Hop is pure SHIT because of sampling. It’s because the “creators” DIDN’T have the talent, inspiration and skills to come up with the most intrinsic hook of their shitty beat. HipHop/Rap “producers” and “engineers” are absolute jokes.
Yes they really are. It’s great listening to the original too. There might be a 12 minute track and about 7 minutes in there’s one little part of the bass that you will notice from one of their tracks.
there's a ton of rappers who also did amazing work at production and didn't get that much recognition, but havoc's at other level, he produced, in my humble opinion, the best beat of all time
It just takes a good ear and creativity tbh. I've dug through crates and bought records just by looking at the cover and I could hear some great potential samples from music I never heard before.
Can't have funk, disco, house, or hip-hop without bass. And it started with jazz, arguably classical before that. A great rhythm section is the foundation of all dance music.
running parallel to jazz was calypso from Trinidad. From the early 1900s or so. Used the same instruments, like the standing bass, plus some indigenous ones. Different but similar. Riddim section is a must.
@@jwlsiee Jazz was an integration of all of the above. There is a clear influence of European musical theory, instrumentation and compositional style that served to augment African & Indigenous/Native American modalities and rhythms. That is why Jazz is *the* American art-form.
Also I just read that Nile rodgers quoted that good times was partially inspired by Hollywood swinging by kool and the gang. I can definitely hear it in the baseline.
Yes it is. It’s been replayed to sound the same. Not a direct sample. Dr. Dre often does this too as you only have to pay the original composer of the music rather than the recording artist too when clearing samples.
@@DJFurio How much money can you save like that ? We just heard that Puff has to pay Sting $5,000 A DAY ! For the rest of his life ! That's more than a Million Dollars a year !
It can save a fortune and also a lot easier to do. A lot of songs that have been successful are either cover versions of older songs or have been written by someone else. In that case it doesn’t matter if the well known recording artist agrees for the sample to be used or not. It’s just whoever wrote the music that has to agree.
@@DJFurio btw bro, meat grinder is from 2004. Otherwise you did great with this video! I like how you put 1992 for halftime as that’s when the single dropped instead of the album
Yeah I know I got the year wrong. I forgot to update the year from the previous track when u copied and pasted the text. And yeah I always try to show the year for the earliest release of the tracks. Some often come out on promo too well before the album drops or even the official single.
Yeah a good bass can really make a track. There were some others that are amazing but they didn’t use samples so they didn’t get included. Dead Prez - Hip Hop was one of them.
fUNNY HOW WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THE MUSICIANS WHO MADE THE ACTUAL MUSIC, THESE CLOWNS STOLE! BUT Y'ALL LOOK AT THE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T PLAY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TO SAVE THEIR LIFE AS MUSICAL GENIUS!
You did a totally amazing job with doing all your research. This had to be time, consuming, and everything much props to you and respect I’ve been telling people about some of those songs that people thought were original from the new artist never knowing about the history that’s why I tell people if you want great songs and you want to do good samples, take yourself to the library and look some of those old songs up because they still have real vinyl records and that’s where the best sound comes from
Great video. Didn't know a lot of these. I did notice that you included "I Got The..." by Labi Siffre for the Eminem sample, but didn't mention that Jay-Z also used a different part of the song for "Streets is Watching". At any rate, awesome job compiling all these.
Glad you like the video and discovered some new samples. I’ve really just shown the most famous use of the samples for this particular video. Some samples have been used hundreds of times over the years. In some of my older videos I’ve shown 4 or 5 uses back to back on certain samples.
I've been into hip hop for a long time and I produce music myself but it's so validating as a younger listener diving into the old school stuff to recognise so many of these samples
It does make sense that there’s a correlation between jazz/soul/funk music being sampled by rappers for their songs because they (or they parents/grandparents) would’ve being listening to them whilst growing up
I was able to guess which tracks used samples about 65% of the time. I don’t have an ear for music, I’m not as talented as the producers that sampled the tracks but - it just makes my heart happy! I love US!

His original Bob James record he sampled was badly water damaged and he was meaning to buy another copy to use for the finished track. He actually liked how it sounded on the damaged version and used that one.
there's one surprise for me among these. I always thought Masta Ace's producer programmed the bassline for Born To Roll. Never knew the Original Concept song, love it!

I know there have always always been original beats that are fire. But sampling is why Hip Hop is what it was and still is, in my heart.
Yeah hip hop was born on sampling and I think will be that way for a long time.
TOTALLY AGREE. Sampling is what made all the hip hop classics possible. Samples are a magical thing in rap music. I'd favor that any day.
Hip Hop is pure SHIT because of sampling. It’s because the “creators” DIDN’T have the talent, inspiration and skills to come up with the most intrinsic hook of their shitty beat. HipHop/Rap “producers” and “engineers” are absolute jokes.
Stealing shit and not making your own shit
Was that Vin Diesel break dancing at 3:50
A Tribe Called Quest with its Q-tip's legendary beats and Phife's insanely chill flow cannot be beaten by anyone else, they simply rule jazz rap!
One of my fav groups still
They would take offense to you calling them jazz rap
@@johngoldsworthy7135 why would they?

Yes they really are. It’s great listening to the original too. There might be a 12 minute track and about 7 minutes in there’s one little part of the bass that you will notice from one of their tracks.
Havoc is a super underrated producer, he murdered that sample
Yep he’s an amazing producer for sure. Some of the early Mobb Deep sample flips were crazy.

Yes, he rates pretty low.
Havoc rates pretty low? That’s the most crazy comment I’ve ever heard
This is why the bassline will always be the most powerful

I'm always amazed by the amount of music you had to know in order to make a beat in the past.

It just takes a good ear and creativity tbh. I've dug through crates and bought records just by looking at the cover and I could hear some great potential samples from music I never heard before.
I do the same. Often the cover of a record shows it might have some interesting things on to sample.
@@DJFurio on the other hand some french chansons i got for free had insane potential too, that I didn't expect hahaha
Nice
Fun fact: Eminems “my name is” sample from Labi Siffres “I got the…” (bass and keys)is actually played by British duo Chas and Dave!
That’s the most mental fact I’ve ever heard but I know it’s true. They were both session musicians in the 70’s before making all their cockney hits.
@@DJFurio it’s hard to conceive haha! Sweet vid btw 👍 I didn’t know a lot of these original records.
Glad you like the video. Thanks for watching.
Another slightly less interesting thing about the song the beat switch at the end of "I've got the blues" was used for JAY-Z streets is watching

The baseline of chic good times was also the inspiration for Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust

Also I just read that Nile rodgers quoted that good times was partially inspired by Hollywood swinging by kool and the gang. I can definitely hear it in the baseline.
I used to be like wait is the song called good times or another one bites the dust as a kid then it really got interesting with rappers delight
There's a very popular song by brazillian rapper Gabriel o Pensador called 2345meia78, and it samples that bassline as well
I got the hardest Goosebumps when Meat Grinder played. RIP Supervillain!
I was lucky enough to see him live a few years ago.
I knew there'd be a lot of A tribe called quest in there, great video
Yeah one of my fav hip hop groups of all time and they live to use jazz basslines in their tracks.
I still get chills when Excursions plays
