So main thing with fishing for gar is to wait and let them eat let them run then you will see them stop and when they stop is when they are eating it and your hookup rate with go up massively
Hey Lojo told a buddy at work about your spillway adventure. And bait you started using. He said that's a old school semi secret bait. They don't know why they/Catfish like the Mallow. But he said to help Mallow stay on. He'd get some cherry jello and a pack of black cherry Kiil-Aid. Mix with enough water to submerge Mallows in a zip lock. Let them absorb a decent amount of jelloThen put in freezer. They be tougher even after thawed from Jell-O. Hope to see ya test it and catch a Monster.
YES more fishing at the dam. This time of year, mid to late September, I start fishing for multispecies. Bass fishing is great but I also like to mystery fish. Never know if you're going to hit that 1/2lb smally as your best for day, or a monster pike that fought forever.

I'd definitely like to see a Gar video. Those things are prehistoric! Got a couple for you? 1 - Can you fit a Gar in your micro pond? 2 - Try "Hair rigging" your hooks with the marshmallow/cut bait? It may get you a bit more success? It's a technique used here in the UK for targeting large Carp. Google "Carp fishing boilie hair rig" or find something on TH-cam? It's pretty simple and you can pre-tie rigs up and keep them in a fishing wallet in your kit. Maybe also consider using pva carp fishing type net bags? You can then pre-mix a ground bait up with a real concoction. Perhaps a mix of all your bait in this video with a groundbait base (usually hemp seed or another specific mix?).
Definitely do the gar video, but rig like you're trying to catch sharks (stronger hooks and metal leader) . Neighbor Darrel needs to give a cooking class ! 👍

However, I was engaged in the building of the camper and norms house.... anyways some of those diy projects was my candy! (loved the community togetherness and direction) used in those videos.
First off, Neighbor Daryl knows how to cook. I'm always watching him at work, and just smile as he does his thing. Next, that's the ideal sized channel catfish for eating. That 2 to 3 pound range gives you a lot of good meat, but any larger and they begin collecting a lot of not so nice contaminants in the belly meat. If you do catch and cook a bigger one, you'll want to remove that red belly meat. Further, if they're bigger, they're older, and the meat doesn't hold up as well. Speaking of, if you're catching and cooking a gar, you'll need to get it from catch to the kitchen table within a few hours. For whatever reason, the meat just turns to mush after they're killed. Good meat, but very delicate and time sensitive. On the subject of gar , don't even waste your time trying to catch them on J or worm hooks. I lucked out once hooking one in the mouth with a 3o circle, but getting through that cartilage filled jaw is nothing short of a small miracle. Your best bet is trying to get the teeth tangled in a bait. Meaning you can either wrap your bait with women's panty hose, or create a lure out of frayed rope. They're prehistoric alpha predators, so there are very few things that they can smell or see that they won't go after. You're very lucky to catch them on a lure, despite the fact that they hit more aggressively than a school of bluegill. The most efficient lure is that frayed rope concept. Use it as a jerk bait. The hook is pretty optional for the species, used mostly as a way to keep the rope onto your line. I've seen some guys use jig heads to make it a swimbait, but most just use it as a weightless top water. I'm a huge fan BTW! Good luck on your gar hunt! I can't wait to see it! BTW, switch over to circle hooks when you're doing a challenge like this. They're self setting, and are very efficient when catching carp and cats.

But for real Gar are good eats like Mr Darrell said ya cut up the back with tin snips and you get two boneless back straps of good meat . One way I cook it is wrapped in tin with butter and pepper but you can add whatever else you want. Another way is Gar patties make them just like you do Salmon patties . Last ones I fixed I used the jiffy corn muffin mix and My Son loved them. Stay Safe and Keep’em coming

Glad to hear it. People from out of town freak out about the hurricanes but I try to tell them I have sat through cat 3's snd 4's and as long as you are on high ground and not in the storm surge path you are usually ok. Down trees are the biggest problem unless you are right on the water or in an area that floods easily.
Insulate and finish your cabin in the woods. Let Mrs. Jo decorate it. make a 4 season screen / canvas wall outdoor kitchen, gravel floor (raised floors attract rodents, hornets etc...)

Yes plz go for gar. I’ve been sending out live bluegill rigs for bass and gar will get them 90 percent of the time. They either snap the line, the hook, or just come off. Would love to see you try and go after them and do a taste test with neighbor Darrel
We used to use treble hooks for gar. Put the bait on and then take a cut piece of panty hose and cover you bait, leaving the points out. It works well. You can even keep stink bait on the hook with the ole panty hose method.
gar is a popular out here in south texas , im from ATL and tried gar for the first time and it taste good and feels like chicken, you should do a gar catch,clean,cook

I live in Houston and to go up to fish Lake Livingston and the Trinity River for huge Alligator Gar is amazing. Im talking 6-8-10ft gar. They aren't as bad to eat as you would think they are. The smaller ones are better for eating. A dedicated gar video would be awesome. Use a wire leader for them though or they will bite right through your line every time. Also a very sharp thick hook to drive it through that bone in their jaw is key. They are super fun to fish for due to the challenge of just getting a good hookup and keeping it on. Not to mention the fight of a huge one.

One thing I remember about fishing growing up in NW Florida is that gar are serious bait stealers, especially the smaller ones.

I think lojo needs to try for lake trout up at Baker Narrows lodge in northern manitoba. Some are over 44" and just put your arm through a work out

I would say best way for me to catch gar is using shiners or small baitfish with a size 6 hook like a small bait holder or carbon hook
