Last year, I called a local mattress factory and got huge mattress bags they were no longer able to use. We filled three of them with leaves (two bags with maple leaves; one bag oak), threw in a couple shovelfuls of well aged horse manure, filled the bags with water and stabbed holes to let it drain. Eight months later I couldn’t resist looking in - leaves were breaking down beautifully and worms had found them! I took out a bucketful and used it as bedding for a worm bin. The material holds fantastic moisture and, as you said, the worms love it. They multiplied like crazy in the worm bin and I just did a comparison of worms raised in the leaf mold bedding vs shredded cardboard. Amazing!
That works well. That is a good tried and true method. They can heat up a lot if the plastic is clear and that can kill worms, so people should keep them in a shady area.

I've read that oak leaves shudnt be composted because of its herbicide properties, same with eucalyptus and horse chestnut leaves.. please tell me more 👍

Each fall, I collect as many fallen leaves as I can with my mulching lawnmower, spread some on all my raised beds, and bag up the rest. Also each fall (for the last few years) I build 2 new raised bed (4' x12'), to which I add kitchen scraps and the bagged leaf mulch (in layers) all through the winter. In the spring, I let my chickens scratch through the new beds for a few days, which mixes it all up. It wasn't completely finished compost by spring planting time (it looked much like your third cup from the video), but the things that grew in those beds were almost pest-free and prolific!. It is now a year later (since starting the 2 new beds from last year) and the soil is black gold!.
It is good stuff. And the 3rd bowl can be used pretty much as one wishes.

Hi Gary. Thank you so much for helping me and many other gardeners become aware of feeding the soil. I am now living in a 5 stage senior community. I am able to have three 4'x8' galvanized raised beds. (I am a happy lady). This fall my husband and I raked leaves on this property, put them in a garbage can and Dave took a battery operated grass trimmer with a blade on instead of the string and put it into the can and used this blade as you would an emulsion blender. "up down round and round" :0) Now I have tiny pieces of leaves and topped off all my raised beds with these wonderful leaf pieces. Oh, I did add some comfrey leaves as a green matter in the garbage can. I am in hopes that these leaves will break down much quicker, even in my Wisconsin frozen tundra weather. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Take care and stay healthy.

This is just what i was looking for thank you! Last September I had my SO give me all my grass clippings. Then when he used the lawn mower to mulch and remove the leaves from 4 trees I took the clippings and put them on top of the grass clippings. I also put in any veggies that werent to par from my first year of gardening. Saturday I put my hand in the pile and picked up the bottom that had a fat worm in it! I came searching because i would like to use some of it. Now I know it will be alright to use and I'll let the rest keep doing it's thing! I still have about 8 weeks before I transplant so I imagine it will be even more ready! I'm so excited! Thanks again!

I bought a gas powered chipper/shredder recently just for composting purposes. My compost bin is loving it so far and has been running at around 130-150° based on the kitchen scraps we add.

@@datsdeb I bought the Harbor Freight one. I’ve had no issues with it. The predator engines seem to run great (have their top of the line pressure washer as well). I love buying the high end stuff…I am a Bosch person, but for items like this, HF is the way to go based on my opinion
Wanted to come back to say - thank you for showing the raised bed with the pine needles on top. It's a simple thing that may seem obvious but it helped me tremendously. I happened to have both resources and it helped keep them from blowing away in the wind!

I have 2 big oak trees in my yard, so my leaves are almost entirely oak. I do chop them up with a mulcher. But after an entire year, the leaves look exactly like they did when I put them in the bins. I think I didn't keep them wet enough. Also, I can't have large piles of leaves in my yard, so I have to keep them in bags & trash cans. I suspect they would break down better if I could have a big 4x4x4' pile. Maybe once I get enough trees going to hide a bin from the neighbors. 😊 The oak leaves that I put in my compost bin do break down, mostly.
So moisture is key and maybe mix in some grass cutting. You do need a nice pile of moist leaves for it to work the best

I have 10 acres with oaks and maples. I have been living here 30+ years. This is the first year I have collected leaves for leaf mold. I have never heard of it until last spring when I purchased some from a local nursery.

I bought a used blender from goodwill and I save up chicken bones and egg shells. I bake them for 3-4 hours at 400f and then grind them up for the garden.

In regards to worms... typically at bait shots you can buy two types of worms. The reg wigglers are composting worms. They like the typical compost mix of browns and greens. This is the type people who use worm bins rely on. These will quickly leave a pure leaf pile though, so would not be the best addition. The other type of worm that is sold are night crawlers. These guys do love leaves, but in a normal situation they live in the soil and then rise up to pull down organic matter back down into the soil. The aren't known for living in just pure leaves either.
For the evil jumping worms, if your yard already has them... there really isn't anything you can do to control them once they are in your yard. If you don't have them now... if you ever do any local plant swaps... you need to rinse the roots completely of soil into a bucket of soapy water to kill any worms and eggs. Leave the bucket sitting out for a week. I have heard that some bait shops down in the south of the US sell asian jumping worms but are called "crazy worms" or "Alabama jumpers" or "snake worms".
At the end of the day, if you yard has worms, they will migrate to and from the leaf pile as the want. Raising a bin off the ground will just slow the process of any type of worm you have in your yard from getting to the leaves. Worms are quite good at crawling up surfaces if they want (ask worm bin folk) and will find you bin eventually. So don't buy worms.

Gary can you please make a video or post a link for one you may have made regarding your garden sprays? I’ve purchased your Neem oil, peppermint oil and Rosemary oil and I know certain items work such as masking the scent of plants, but I was hoping you can break down everything in one video. QUESTION: Gary, we have 2 magnolia trees. Can those leaves and the pods, that also fall in autumn, be mowed over and used in a leaf mold pile? They get mixed with maple leaves as well.

I missed the LIVE, but have a question: very tiny yard, so I don’t have room for a compost pile (I may try the trash can w/leaves)..but as we are taking the leaves off our lawn (shredded), will putting some on my flower beds actually accomplish anything? Ty (got the answer later in the video..ty)!
Yes. Cut leaves and grass are great compost and or mulch. Cover you're beds with them. Dont mix them in the soil. Let them just be a mulch layer and with time they decay.

I would like to know about effects of jumping worms, too. They are in my soil.
If I pull a green leaf from a tree, that leaf has nitrogen? But if it turns brown it doesn’t? So if I left a leave on a plate on my countertop it will turn brown. Where did the nitrogen go?
So a green leaf is loaded with nitrogen. If picked green, it considered a green source of nitrogen. As it sits on the tree, trees pull back nutrients and they fall with less. Green grass or fresh picked leaves left lying around, begin to decompose naturally and the proteins and compounds break down. Some N is loss during this. I dont know the exact process. But a browning picked green leaf versus a leaf that browns on a tree, has more nitrogen even when brown.

It does with hot composting for sure. Cold composting not that much. Leaves keep a lot of oxygen in the mix. It wont hurt for sure.

I gather leaves by cleaning up my mother in law's lawn every fall but I've only ever used them for bedding in the chicken barn. From there they go with the chick poo to the compost. Is doing this method going to be more beneficial than mine?

I have never seen and worms in all my garden spaces. I use compost and I have purchased the Texas super soil which is compost. So this year I will buys some tomspread around the garden to help it out. I am on the coast, a lot of sand and black dirt. In the meantime, I will continue with my 3 compost bins.

Question: I built a leaf cage 2'x4' as that was my space, but I found my cat is pooping in it ;-/ Should I open it up and clear out her poop? I already put a metal "lid" on it so she can't get in there anymore. I know you recommend 4'x4' but Will my 2'X4' be enough space? Thank you for the help!
Remove the cat waste as you see it but dont over worry. 4x4 is best. But keep your pile moist and your should be okay with leaves.

I am in zone 7a. Can a hose link be left out all winter. As of now, I put my hoses in the basement.

I understand that if you make leaf mold out of brown leaves, it won't have many nutrients in it, but what if you make it out of green leaves? Will any of those nutrients be retained in the compost?
Less in browns as tree takes a lot back in. But it is good for soil and has some nutrients. Green leaves would have more nitrogen but it will heat up and decompose differently.

Walnut tree leaves contain very high levels of lignin. Lignin will prevent seed germination and stunted plant growth. So, it is not recommended to use walnut leaves for leaf mould. Oak leaves have a high content of lignin.
In 2023 I used 100% leaf mould in my tomato pots with saucers. The tomatoes did poorly and some died. Also, since it's decomposed organic material, it held water very well. Drawback- when the leaf mould got too wet the leaf mould went anaerobic. Started smelling like a dead rotting animal that attracted flies that laid eggs into the soil. Maggots came afterwards.
My cucumbers & potatoes did very well in 100% leaf mould.
Also, I believe the tomatoes didn't do to well because I think they need a bacterial dominant soil rather than a fungal dominant soil. I also think the tomato plants died because of the constant changing of the soil when it was mildly wet to over wet. When mildly wet it was an anaerobic soil environment that gave some plant benefit. When overly wet, it went anaerobic & all the bad anaerobic microbes harmed the tomato plants.The constant cycling from anaerobic to aerobic cycling harmed & killed the plants.
I planted basil & peppers in leaf mould & their growth was severely stunted. So I won't be planting certain plants in 100% or 50% leaf mould anymore.

What about oak leaves?
I'm hoping they are good as my mom's is mostly oak trees...lol
They take longer so I chop them up. Toss in some grass if you can and keep the pile moist. Oak leaves are thick.

Yes they very much can be dangerous, my son at one time fell real hard on to the drive and was badly hurt, resulted in a torn meniscus, which has resulted in this continued,
to hurt and I too another time took a fall from same and another time had a very young cat that took fright when I was carrying him over the hose pipe and he attacked my hand so badly cut up that I had to have an operation on several fingers after many attendances to medical help.
So I would advice to own a hosepipe that is made easy to close/put away, to avoid any accidents.
I have been collecting leaves since the end of last summer and adding this to our compost bins and also bagged up some because my compost bins are enclosed and
I do not always have good enough weather at a time that I can access to enable me accessing these bins, as it has been raining so very much here in England/UK
to enable me to add to compost bin, however I would just like to say that after making compost and compare this to what can be purchased there really is NO comparison
because that which is purchased is no where as good as that which is home grown is so wonderful and I have made my comparison with all types of purchased
composts, cheap to the very most expensive there really is no comparison to be made.

I find vegetables in the dumpster and bring it home throw it in a 3 foot hole .. I put 1 foot of vegetables in the hole and add 4 inch's of chickened pooped soil then add 6 inch of wild horse poop I gathered .. then another foot of vegetables then add another 6 inches of chicken poop soil ....
