Yemi Alade a explosé avec son titre Johnny. Elle a sorti son album "Women of Steel".
L’auteure et compositrice nigériane raconte ses rencontres avec les stars continentales DJ Arafat et Angélique Kidjo.
Yemi Alade est née à Abia, au Nigeria, il y a trente ans. Après des débuts dans un girls band, elle participe à un télécrochet, le « Peak Talent Show », qu’elle remporte en 2009 et qui la propulse sur le devant de la scène. En 2013, le tube Johnny, grâce à son clip acidulé, devient un hit planétaire. Il a été vu plus de 100 millions de fois sur TH-cam. L’artiste, connue pour ses chorégraphies pêchues et son goût pour les parures et tenues ethniques, avoue volontiers aimer jouer avec le côté bling-bling.
Yemi Alade est l’une des rares chanteuses à émerger en ce moment sur le plan continental et à marcher dans les pas de son modèle, Miriam Makeba, dont elle a emprunté le statut de « Mama Africa ». Celle qu’on appelle « the yoruba-igbo girl », en raison de sa double origine ethnique, a fait sienne la tradition typiquement africaine d’interpréter une chanson en plusieurs langues. Nombre de ses titres possèdent une version en kiswahili.
