EXO Had been through a lot of hardships, As you can see in this vid they are all emotional, (Kai is crying, Suho is about to cry) this song is dedicated to the three chinese members who left and for exo-l’s hence I’m always emotional too when listening to this one.

"Promise" was wrote and composed by Lay, with the Korean lyrics wrote by Chen (an EXO-M member) and rap by Chanyeol. It was created in 2014 after Kris and Luhan left and was released in 2015 after Tao left. The song was meant to explain everything that happened to them in 2014 with the members leaving the company and "breaking their promise" to EXO-L to always be one. (EXO's slogan is "We Are One" -- one as a group and one with their fans. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) It's an apology to the fans. EXO is saying they are sorry for causing the fans pain and for making EXO-L sad.
Everyone had a really hard time during this time period because everyone felt really blindsided by everything that happened and by the members that left because none of them ever said anything to anyone before they decided to leave. Lay, in particular, as the only Chinese member remaining, had a really hard time because he not only was the only foreign member now, but he had an immense burden with the fact that he had to straddle the line between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to EXO and SM Entertainment. Lay has always been very grateful for all the opportunities that SM has given him in terms of his life and career, so he always wants to be loyal to EXO and the company, but he is constantly having to defend his loyalty and reassure fans that he has no intention of betraying them the same way they felt the rest of the Chinese members did. As the song says, EXO promises that they will always protect EXO-L and make them smile.
And then with the rift between Korea and China,, Lay has had an even harder road to navigate because he was no longer allowed to participate in activities with EXO because they are a Korean group. So he has been away from the group for more than 4 years now. However, he is still working really hard to make sure that EXO-L's know that his separation is not by choice. The only reason he is keeping his distance from the rest of the EXO members is because of the rules of the Chinese government, and yet, many people still see Lay's absence as a betrayal of his loyalty as an EXO member. So he is constantly struggling to prove people wrong, while also following the rules of the Chinese government, which, until recently, discouraged him from even mentioning his relationship with anything to do with Korea.
To navigate these roadblocks SM has found ways around them, for instance with Lay's solo promotions. Because Lay was not allowed to promote in Korea, SM found a way to promote him as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with him to release English songs and albums and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases tie into the fact that he is a member of EXO -- its SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members right now, that they still make sure to show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to both Lay and SM.
But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers, even from afar. Most recently we were able to see Lay back together with the rest of EXO when Lay came to Korea to be there for the day that D.O. enlisted in the military. He always works hard to remind everyone how important EXO and EXO-Ls are to him.
However, as you probably, know, in the last couple of weeks the tensions between China and Korea have started to let up and the Chinese government has rescinded their ban on China and Korea working together, so we are starting to see our Chinese idols working in Korea again. For example, Lay has recently been talking more about EXO on Chinese programs and WayV, NCT's Chinese sub-unit has actually been appearing on Korean variety shows and doing activities in Korea. Before this WayV, as a group, was not allowed to be associated with anything to do with Korea if they wanted to be allowed to promote in China. However, WayV even released a Korean version of their song, "Turn Back Time," which is a first for them. Also, after almost 6 years, we have seen Zhoumi, one of Super Junior's Chinese members actually back in Korea working alongside his Korean Super Junior members and he has released a song, "Starry Night" with one of his Korean members and the song has both a Chinese and Korean version. So I take all this as a good sign, and we can only hope that when Lay's schedule becomes less busy that we might get to see him working with EXO again. However, now the EXO members are all starting to go off to serve their military obligations, which has caused the main group of EXO to go on hiatus for a while, so it's hard to say when all the stars will align and allow Lay to promote with EXO once again.
You should check out the "Promise response song" where some EXO-L fans took the melody of "Promise" and wrote their own lyrics that reflects the response to EXO's message in "Promise." It's called "Dear You response version". th-cam.com/video/h4G-O6WCbGA/w-d-xo.html EXO-Ls wanted to let EXO know that we still love them and to stop blaming themselves, etc. because we will always be by your side no matter what. We understand that the members were having just as hard time with everything that happened as we were and we still support and love them through it all, etc.
This is a really good explanation-- I just want to add that Lay also holds a political position in China as a youth ambassador. This is why it's much harder for him to promote with EXO than it is for idols from China in other groups (like GOT7's Jackson or members of NCT & WayV).

2014-2015 was a rough year for EXO. After all the controversies they've been through. EXO’s “Promise” was made for EXO-L. The lyrics hold a lot of meaning as they talked about apology to EXO-Ls for not staying as 12 forever & not keeping their slogan "we are one" (which they don't have to) and a promise to work hard and protect fans.

2014 was such a hard time for us... 'Promise' Is a song for us, exo-Ls... Every words hit Exo-Ls with all sort of emotions ... As someone new in EXO, I understand how surprised you were that Xiumin can carry a tune. He is infact one of the lead vocals. Actually, all of them has great vocals hence the title vocal kings.
One of their great ballads that is a reaction-must is the Japanese song Paper Cuts live, sung by CBX an EXO subunit composed of Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin. This is one of the songs that greatly showcased their amazing vocals. Very emotional that it can pierce your heart.

Lay is very close with the members, and members are really close to him as well. Exo went through a rough time when those two left, so Lay wrote promise, the Chinese version, to ensure the members that he wouldn't do the same. And of course Chen and Chanyeol help fill up the korean version.
The Mandarin lyric and Korean lyric are actually not the same, where the Chinese version felt much more personal. That's why many are saying that the Chinese version is to EXO, and the Korean version is to EXO-L.
One of the interviews around that time where Lay was in China, and EXO did a facetime with him. They were joking around and soon lost their smile when the MC asked that if Lay is not going to come back to exo. They felt released after Lay once again ensure that he wouldn't leave EXO.

Promise or EXO 2014 is the title and it’s for EXOLs. It’s known that 2014 was like a black year for EXO due to members leaving the group (so much controversies) and for them (EXO) it seems they broke their promise to us (fans). The reason why this song has so much emotions. Lay actually wrote Promise and Chen and Chanyeol helped with the Korean lyrics. You can also find videos of them singing this with all their hearts while some of them breaking up and crying. :( This song is really special to us.

just to add, Lay composed and wrote the original Chinese version first then later with the help of Chen & Chanyeol, they wrote the Korean version. Lay wrote about it in his biography, Independent 24.
This was such a hard time to be an exo-l. They had gone through so much themselves, but they worried about us, that they’d let us down. They could never.
Lay was the one who came up with the idea and he composed the lyrics and melody. To all the doubters who think Lay isn't genuinely committed to EXO should know the story of this song.
To be absolutely honest, almost all SM Entertainment artists can sing because it stresses vocal training. SM's the agency that is known for having the best vocalists. A lead vocal in a SM group can probably be a MAIN vocalist at another agency. It's sad because the main vocalists are so good and groups tend to be large so lead vocalists can't shine as much. It's not that the other vocalists in SM groups can't sing, it's just that there are so many main vocalists and too few lines.
One reason sub-units are loved is because one can see the talents of members better since there are less members in sub-units. For example, non-fans don't know Xiumin can sing unless they check out EXO-CBX because there are only 3 people in it. That also goes for EXO-SC. This sub-unit is just the 2 rappers of EXO and they can SING. Sehun now has the chance to show his talents and quiet all the haters who say he has no talent and he's there for his visuals.
Yes, SM is known for visuals but it is also known as the vocal powerhouse among agencies. Another example is Red Velvet. They just came out with the sub-unit of Irene and Seugli. Irene has been amazing people with her singing abilities because she is another SM person known simply her visuals.
