I just spoke to one of the reps from TD. For the /ES, you need ton have $12,650.00 PERIODT! No Intraday or after hour margin. You can stay for as long as you have the contract for.

Awesome info, found nowhere else. One question, once one holds beyond close a position where suddenly they are short the margin required thus triggering the max margin requirement on their account, when if ever does the margin requirement ever see relief from the max if they never break this rule? For TD Ameritrade.

Hello, thanks for video. Can you explain what Maintenance Margin is? NinjaTrader has it.
And another question - so Initial Margin sums with either Day-Trading Margin if you're trading intraday or full Daily margin if you go overnight without closing position. Is this correct?

It's not the government that requires maintenance margins to increase at close. It's the CME, CBOT, NYMEX exchange that requires it due to governance accounting policies that all accounts must be settled at the end of the day. Watch the movie "Trading Places".
It's called day margins at open, and night margins after close. Initial margins are what you have to have in your account from the start before you can buy one or more contracts. The day and night margins you pay for each contract then become maintenance margins. The initial margin requirements allows your contacts to be above maintenance requirements. If you go into a negative drawdown, you must be above the day or night maintenance margins other wise you will have a margin call. That's what the initial margin requirements allow you to stay above the day and night maintenance margins per contract long enough for you to withstand a negative drawdown until you go back up to profitable levels. The initial margin is a government safety requirement designed to protect the consumer from certain levels of negative drawdown to ensure the don't blow their account immediately. It's very much needed in trading and will increase at certain times of the year when the index becomes volatile or has high beta.
Your explanation was very bad, lacking details, and somewhat misleading.

This just happened to me today. I opened up an account with Tradovate with $500 without understanding the margin requirements. I had three contracts that I was backwards on but my stop loss would not have allowed my account to be negative. But they close me out before the end of the day. Can you tell me how much I need to have just for day trading per contract or for micros? If I want to trade three or four micros, how much do I have to have in my account to be able to do that intraday?

TOS doesn't care about this, if you trade during the day they still use initial margin.
