I recently took a ceramic tile class. The instructor mentioned that these tiles were all hand laid, by craftsmen. The fact that they are still holding up is a testament to the quality workmanship that they did. To this day, the staggered pattern that they used is still referred to as "subway tile".
City Hall Station looks beautiful and clean even though it's been closed for over 60 years, meanwhile Chambers Street is still open but looks like a dump.
City Hall is closed because later on in the MTA'S existence, the cars got bigger, and all of the cars wouldn't fit in the station and you would need to take a big step to get on the train.
Someone asked how does one get into this old station. If I'm not mistaking, the entrance is on City Hall grounds itself; I think I remember seeing an old subway entrance in City Hall park. You would have to get onto City Hall grounds (pass through security entrance) and then go to the old subway stairway, only when there is an official MTA tour. That's how people are in that station. The only other way is to be in the train itself with approval from conductor or motorman, which nowadays are a certain okay, as you DO see people on board as the train passes by. It has become a tourist attraction and to see how beautiful that station is.

The original cars that the IRT ran only had doors on the very ends of the cars. At the end of the car, the gap between the train and the platform was very small, so no issue
might not be room given the clearance, also when that's under construction the 6 train will have to terminate elsewhere; lastly it's kinda pointless since the station is epty anyways
+WaluigiBoy Gamer It's on a curve, and would require expensive to maintain gap fillers. Also, the entrance staircase is right underneath City Hall, which is off limits to the public (security concerns). Also, having it open would slow down service.
I presume the trains still pass through but don't stop here anymore? They must have a slow order for the sharp curve. There don't seem to be many people on the trains.
The trains are empty because passengers are asked to get off at Brooklyn bridge. And this is a loop to where the train can return to Brooklyn bridge going the other direction
Why Don't They Just Extend The Platform A Bit (5 More Cars) And Add The Platform Extension Thingies Like At South Ferry, Clean And Maybe Revamp The Station, Add A New Entrance And Re-Open The Station? It's As Simple As That! Also I Have A Question, Is The Color Under The Car # State Which Line They Use? Example: 7th Avenue, Lexington Avenue, Flushing.
+Jarek Alexander The station entrance is right next to City Hall, inside the security zone. Also, the ridership would be so low that it wouldn't really justify opening the station. The color under the car numbers is an indicator of the yard the car is assigned to, although at the moment, a lot of cars are being loaned between yards, so they're not really accurate.
+Jarek Alexander That is the very reason why the station unfortunately closed back in 1945. The cost involved to extend the platforms which included a major realignment of the tracks was just too high.
Am I correct in hearing that the MTA does allow passengers to stay on the 6 train if they want to when it hits the south end of Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, so that they can see the old City Hall stop? I wanted to do that on my most recent NYC trip a few years ago when I heard others mention that tip just before my most recent NYC trip, and I was bummed that I didn't quite have enough time to try doing that. They need to learn to put officers in stations, our current IRT Lexington stations are dumps
It looks like a dump because of the people who use it.
It looks beautiful because it's closed
The station looks a little cleaner than other abandoned stations such as 91th street station
It's a shame that the most beautiful station in the system had to be built on such a heavy curve to go back uptown.

Tanzida Islam yes
Hi DJ
I love vintage. This is so heartbreaking
Why was this station closed again?
Beautiful station. Bring em back!
they cant. you figure out
they can’t cause it a huge curve and it’s pretty hard for it to get up
You know for some reason when ever thses things come out they get sold out in 5 min
They're very popular. You gotta nab tickets quickly.
Hi DJ Hammers
Awesome quality but I can on watch a train go through so many times. More interested in the architecture
What a beautiful station. I have seen pictures of it, but no video until now.
Standing right next to the sound of that flange can give anyone a headache and hurt your ears. But great video of the City Hall Loop, DJ!!!!!!
I think the flange noises are loud but beautiful. 💖☺🚝🚇

what could happen if an overspeeding train came rushing through the station ?? would it cause havoc like in the movie "knowing" ??
carljohnson621 in knowing, a fictional station gets destroyed, not city hall.
He is asking what COULD happen not if it did happen
Oh, well it would get destroyed like in movies (somehow)
Old south ferry and city hall were closed for 2 reasons.
1. The large gap.
2. The loud brakes.
Wow. So beautiful!
The long subway cars we use today are not built for that turn at all 😂
