Thank you for keeping our ancient Philippine culture alive through your wonderful music. I hope your expertise could be passed on to our younger generation which is the hope of our Motherland.
Imagine this modernized with rock/electronic/orchestra/fantasy vibes. It would sound really epic. Also the sounds reminds me of the Shamisen, that Japanese string instrument.
@@gabcatacutan8775 tl;dr Don’t feel like it’s cultural appropriation, it’s not, as long as you’re not doing it disrespectfully. You’re actually contributing to the fight against colonial mentality and Western cultural dominance, and promoting the cultures of these groups and helping to revive pre-colonial native culture in colonized groups like the Tagalog and Visayans, who were originally similar to these groups. -- I don’t think it should be cultural appropriation. With so much of the pre-colonial Luzon and Visayan cultures destroyed by the Spanish and Americans, we really have no choice but to borrow from Philippine cultures that weren’t impacted so much (like the Cordillerans, Lumad, and muslim groups) and syncretize these customs and arts with what remains of the pre-colonial culture of Luzon and the Visayas. This is how we will eventually get out of colonial mentality, by letting go of most of the Western-imposed traditions and looking to who were are. Tagalogs and Visayans borrowing from the cultures of the Cordillerans/Moro/Lumad will not only strength their place in society (from marginalized to celebrated), but it should also be enriching the Filipino national culture as a whole. Okir, ikat/inabel, native poetry forms, native Filipino instruments, among others should be brought into pop culture so we can combat colonial mentality and foreign misconceptions. Although these originated from different ethnic groups, as they are all Filipinos, it should be able to be freely practiced by all Filipinos, even if they aren’t from the ethnic group of which the tradition originates.
I'm a Filipino And I'm a fan of shamisen and koto without knowing about this instrument. and it makes me felt really ashamed of myself. never do I realize how beautiful the sound that it produced.
Salamat Samaon Solaiman... you have enliven Magindanao spirit with your virtouso kutyapi pieces. I miss the days i joined tours and you converted to kutyapi composition the humming i suggested.
What a brilliant performance! What is this kind of music called? By reading the comments I gather it is from the Philippines and the the artist passed away. So condolences are de rigueur....

I wish I was more musically inclined so I can learn how to play these instruments. We can't let these instruments die out...
It's just a pentatonic scale with the other string droning on a fixed note. It's pretty easy to pick up. :)
