You can say that again, my dad's E32 735i is at 503k miles and still on the original engine.

My dad has 2002 528i M touring with 290k and it's never gone wrong engine wise, bullet proof engines and they pull like hell!
all it takes is one owner that doesnt keep up with maintenance and its a complete different story
have an e32 750i with 337k still running smooth :D
Thats especially impressive given that e32's are said to be one of the least reliable bimmers, though that doesn't mean unreliable. Badass cars though

Being a Euro Spec M3 could be your answer, if you live in the USA and you've only heard M3's that were brought in America a Euro M3 would sound a little better and rev abit higher.

We got an older model 240hp I6 for our e36. Still a decent engine, but not even close to the Euro spec M3. It wasn't until the e46 when we got the same engine.
we got it earlier than that but only in the Z3 based models...
A really poor running euro spec E36 M3 still makes more power than the US version, brand new. Good to know. :(

e46 m3 gets all the way to 8K. I can personally attest to that on a daily basic.

It's 317HP but on the engine, you have 10-20% transmission power loss so that are perfect results!

The 321hp for the 3.2 M3s were always on the optimistic side. There were only a few which actually got close to that; most were around 310-315hp.
Alex would be lucky to get close to that imho. Most of the 3.0 produce more than BMW said they would. I know a couple of guys with standard ones that have up to 304hp. Mine isn't too shabby either at 296hp completely original. However, it already has gotten a new cat, new exhaust and new vanos seals (Beisan Systems, pretty cheap and massively noticable).
BTW Alex, you might want get a little higher oil-temperature before doing 0-60 runs or even maxing it. My mechanic says you should have at least 85° before you give it the beans.
Some versions in Europe got the full power. The ones without the governer.. I don't know how but there seems to be a difference
Anytime I see an E36, it will remind me of my uncle who passed away due to brain cancer. He had a white cabrio E36 M3. It was such an amazing car, he was such an amazing person.

The E36 is in an awkward place, not new enough to be desirable and not old enough to be an appreciating classic.
But at least it's not tearing it's rear end apart with cracks like the weak rear E46!

your afr is reading about right for stock. these engines can do from 13 to 12 @ 7600rpm on stock pistons safely and some mild knock adjustment.
TBH it will just be blocked cats if you're seeing a non linear power curve.
last one we tuned is throwing down 310whp
but if it makes 317 crank 279 is good rwhp

Blake D There's some kind of household cleaning chemical you can use can't remember it though. Cats aren't that expensive and he could always get hi-flow ones. They'll help more than a catback exhaust.

There's a difference between BHP and RWHP right?
BHP is usually measured straight from the engine. RWHP is what the tyres actually put onto the road

I have a 98 US spec M3 cabriolet. 220,000 mls full top and rebuild and suspension with new dual floating drilled and slotted rotors. Convertible top is broken and had to do all the window motors and switches. Still very much in love with the old beast.Definetly keep it. It'll be worth something many years from now.
I appreciate that the numbers were given early into the video, rather than forcing us to watch the ENTIRE thing just to find the numbers. Still watching it all the way, though.

Jokes are on people who think the OEM HP is real. Most can't reach the claimed number. And every identical car can bring different results...........are you ready for this..............on different dyno's.

Those dynos are a good example for being eager to believe numbers once they are measured and printed/displayed. Still many inaccuracy factors as long as you measure the whole car and not the engine alone. But together with the launch tests the amount of power loss is at least comprehensible. Entertaining video!
Last time I came this early,That M3 Still has 317 Horsepower
TFW a "Bad" euro-spec M3 produces more power than a brand new e36 m3 in America. I wish BMW hadn't nerfed it for the US.
The E46 fixed that problem.
Sorry, late. But the only reason it came with less power is because they had to fit a more restrictive cat to meet US regulations.

10% lossed in HP, and 10% lossed in the acceleration, I think after 20 years of service, it's a great result
I thought it was a sub 6 seconds to 60 on that last run.
If you want more bhp thrashing the nuts off and engine usually works for me, that or it goes bang. A few magazines years ago tried thrashing a stock motor vs a pipe and rolling road setup from nearly new motors. The thrashed engines were always faster and made more power on the dyno after a couple of thousand miles of abuse.

They were comparing it to the official manufacturer figures, so I guess it was calculated peak power from the crank. 279 whp would be more than the official figures!
dynos can calculate backwards to get horse power at the crank
was gonna add "please learn" or something similarly mean at the end but figured i'll be nice for once after all I don't know jack about dynos, or cars.

Isn't the 317 advertised hp at the crank? The 275 whp isnt far off that...
This special dyno measures crank-horsepower through a calculation that includes drive-train loss.
IDK if he knows, but 280hp at the wheels isn't too bad considering they made around 320 at the crank from the factory.

The original specs was 321 at the crank. 279 at the wheels is about right. What the fuck is this guy talking about 317 at the wheels?

Now I'm driving a m140i 0-60 in less than 5! Has time became different because in my memory that m3 still felt super fast even though technology has moved on

Dynos measure in Wheel HP which looses 10-15% for a 2WD car and 20-25% for a AWD/4WD car. So measuring 279 at the rear wheels is as good as the car gets since the factory specifications from Germany are 321PS or 317BHP without the drive train loss. Maybe with some servicing you can get it up to 290. My then bone stock 2011 335i measured 291 at the rear wheels which was spot on for similar cars.

I thought they measured friction by seeing how fast the dyno runs down when they come off the throttle and calculating it from that.

As a E46 M3 owner I cringed each time you dumped the clutch, these cars don't handle clutch dump that good. I would suggest slipping the clutch and wear the clutch out. when you dump the clutch you are beating up all the mounts, chassis and transmission. I'd rather replace only clutch than possibly other more expensive parts. Nice M3 man keep it!!

my e46 m3 had 20 shims put in it by ETA Motorsport just before I bought it during its inspection II, made a hell of a difference apparently! on 125k also so similar mileage. Reckon Vixpys nailed it.
did you check the throttle cable and make sure the throttle body is opening all the way.... usually some zip ties on the throttle pedal cable end fix it to take the slack out.....
My E36 M3 3.2L Euro made 294 at the wheels. I was bummed out about it first but now I'm quite happy with it :D
Did you get the valve clearances done and any difference in top end power afterwards if measured?
Maybe some newbies don't know about this car, but it's a 3.2 litre l6 24V with about 320 hp, 11:1 compression ratio, 50/50 weight distribution, and it's a 20 year old car. Not bad at all, gentlemen.

Dude, watch all your videos and never comment (not sure if you read them all), but if you slip the clutch instead of dropping it and try to get a feel for traction from 0mph, you should eliminate the scrabble which will help the launch and make a huge difference to the 0-60. Obviously not great for the clutch plate, but neither is dropping it haha! Learned this after doing a million race starts, have a go! Love the number plate by the way.
Interesting about the valve clearances, it hadnt even occurred to me, after all, not many people have bothered with valve gaps over the last 40 years, Mini & Ford OHV owners aside..
I wonder if my Jag XJR still has close to the original 370 brake.. It still comfortably hits 60 in a tad over 5 seconds with no drama.

We're talking horsepower at the wheels (whp), not horsepower at the crank like manufacturers quote. I'm American so I had to look up the stock power figures of the Euro E36 M3. At 321 bhp, assuming a normal drivetrain loss of 15%, we get a new stock whp number of 273 whp. If your rust bucket did 6 whp better than that, how are you disappointed?
5th Gear managed to get back 11.5 BHP with just a full service, some fuel system cleaner and new plugs. With the valve clearances adjusted and the new exhaust I bet it could hit 300bhp no problem.
Love the video... altho I do not understand how it's so slow? My 97 328is with only an exhaust upgrade does the 1/4 in 14.2 and 0-60 in 5.5. I've also raced heads up with a bone stock 97 M3 at the track and he ran a 13.9. I'm sure being on an actual drag strip helped my cause a lot. Either way, I love the e36 M3 and I love this video!

Amazing how many people over look the maintenance for the intake valves especially when direct port injection is used.
mine did make 288hp 370nm.... After total engine rebuild and ecu re-programmed it made 332hp and 401nm, still with original exhaust and intake.

1. weight reduction
2. shorter final drive
You can have the engine refreshed and get back the 321 stock hp or maybe a bit more for $1.5k... that car deserves it!

I think this dyno calculed (showed) the BHP not the RWP, 279RWHP is too high for a stock S50B32 but its really too low for only a valve clrearance adjustment...
I thought 317 was a figure from the manufacturer's spec which was measured from crank not from the wheels? Because wheels usually get 15% less horsepower than the crank, 317 (crank) - 47.55 (drivetrain) = 269.45 (whp). Colin is actually making more power than average m3s
The service won't be enough : vanos refection, get rid of all the old oil cooked up there, check the little grill filter. All the oil holes are certainly blocked hence the low pressure for the actuators (150 bars in working condition if I remember well)
I saw so many slow E36M3 due to vanos issue, valve clearance is only part of the problem imo...
I was also surprised how rich the car is running, plus the fact that it still have a cat it should have read even less richer.
Those cars can run very very poor without an issue, these engine are very strong. 12.8AFR at redline seems closer to what I recall back in the days. May be you have a defective temperature sensor that run the car richer as if the engine were still cold.
317BHP, so that's what the car dyno'd at the wheels when it came out, or is that the advertised amount (from the crank)?

change your injectors, spark plugs and air filter to start. you can have power loss there. I remember doing oil changes in grand trismo and seeing my HP go up.
