It is not easy to be a blacksmith I can't imagine thousands of years ago how could they do such amazing work back then you have to have lots of patience and determination to create Amazing weapons
Although forging of steel isn't "thousands" of years old, the ingenuity of figuring all those processes out... from copper to bronze and all the way to steel shows that blacksmiths were in fact the scientists of the past.
@@jakedonald7934 The geometry of the eye is a good way to discern. On the other hand, all of 3 of them made hatchets instead of tomahawk in the 2nd round (Aaron had some problems fitting his), so we're all in the parameters.
Forging axes and hatchets is very difficult without enough experience. It also need a handle type tool to shape the eye. But skillful blacksmith can forge hatchet without power hammer, hydro press and grinder. By the way, in Japan, during the feudal era, the social status of swordsmiths was high, and the social status of blacksmiths who made agricultural tool and kitchen knives was lower than that of swordsmiths. However, Blacksmiths were proud of their ability to forge various steel products.
@@justwithjosh560 I'm pretty confident LUCK shouldn't be a HUGE factor in a competition based on SKILL. That's the same kind of thing as in games you critically fail on something you've been doing all your life because of luck and suddenly instantly die and lose everything you own in a pit of death.
And it's a challenge each were given different challenges (the shape of the steel) and they have to go through it, its like picking a question in contest and if you're luck is within you're range, and hope that question will be easy. You see this is also a *contest* and *almost* every contest has a luck based system in it.
Well, if you want to prove that you're the best, you have to actually be the best. The challenges are hard and taxing for a reason, everyone who even attempts this are very skilled. Those who pull through the challenge are experts.
J does the round 1 and 2 challenges prior to the show ( and probably Ben now too sinve he's a judge) to see if the challenge is feasible or not. Dave makes the final round weapon prior to the show. The example weapons are usually the ones they made in the test run. Doug is no smith but he's supposed to be the end-user part of the judges.
The parameters for the dimensions of the axe are all the same. The shape and materials are different.True, it's not entirely fair, the the Smith with the four rods had an easier time, but he still failed. It's a matter of skill and adaptability.
We've been making axes since the beginning of time for gods sakes. Make a butterfly, or a truncated figure eight. Don't try and get a mandrel up it until it's an even 8. The guy at the end is doing it right. Germanic axes for fighting have always been 'within a few layers of parchment' thick with a slight budge to fit the bit.
Wouldn't it not matter if the weight of the blade is towards the back of the axe head? I mean the momentum is still there behind the cutting edge, surely it would still transfer to the wood.
The thicker the sides towards the blade edge the more damage it can do even it will not break when chopping like wood. That axe head is to thin it will kill a person but armor and wood nope
The edge should be made of your best, toughest, steel. These days a hatchet is all one material but when tool steel was hard to come by you made body of mild steel and forge welded a piece of tool steel for the cutting edge.
- Even the winners have to give up their blades. In order to get insured the studio had to designate the creations as props and not allow any contestants to leave with the weapons.
It's not supposed to have a climax. You want that then go watch a chick drama show. This is about men using skill to overcome obstacles outside of their comfort zones to produce the best product they can.

Those are not hatchets, those are Tomahawks.
Hatchets go on the top of the handle, Tomahawk slide up from the bottom.
Reuben Willard I like this level of specificity, I wish a weapon show would get this right but most people don’t care I guess
what do u mean
Hatchets drop on the top, Tom's up from the bottom? How can you tell how they are tapered?
Only that young guy Aaron did that. The other two Smith's hilted the hatchets properly.

Pretty well considering they are world class masters of smithing blades
